this popularity question is not even a thing -- deej you're just wrong
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link
i just think curren$y is a lot more popular than yall realize
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:28 (thirteen years ago) link
whether or not curren$y put him on is irrelevant as well
okay give us something quantifiable then since you're saying that wiz's hit single & touring is apparently irrelevant to the question
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:29 (thirteen years ago) link
im not wrong that curren$y could easily sell out colleges, or that the entire crowd at the wiz show i saw knew exactly who curren$y was & whent nuts when the dj dropped his tracks.
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:29 (thirteen years ago) link
yeesh i conceded that wiz may have recently surpassed him, but it would be entirely on the basis of that single alone. as i said tho, curren$y is far more popular than u guys think
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:30 (thirteen years ago) link
and ive given you 'quantifiable' reasons why
i don't agree with "mild critical acclaim" or even that curren$y is a star as of yet and it's not like devin hasn't already and isn't continuing to record with a shitton of regional guys but okay
― old LOKO heads (forksclovetofu), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:31 (thirteen years ago) link
in what ways would curren$y even begin to approach the word "star"
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:31 (thirteen years ago) link
Does "Say Yeah" count as a minor hit? Reached 20 on Hot Rap Tracks on Billboard and 96 on Pop 100.
― altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:32 (thirteen years ago) link
I mean I think what I said in my review is totally fair.
they are definitely in the same ballpark, but wiz's appeal is broader.

he was on young money & tons & tons of rap fans know who he is? lil wayne put him on at the height of his popularity? hes been recording tracks coast to coast w/ artists from virtually every regional scene?
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:34 (thirteen years ago) link
and both are more popular than devin thd dude, not sure why he was even brought into this
― The Reverend, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:34 (thirteen years ago) link
wiz & him have done joint cds together so theres a massive audience overlap
also he had a minor hit of his own with "where the cash at"
― The Reverend, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:35 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't think, right now, curren$y could sell out a 600 sro space in nyc with a 25 cover. maybe with wiz? maybe not. and if he could, it would totally be because of black and yellow i mean i know that's nyc but still.
― old LOKO heads (forksclovetofu), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:35 (thirteen years ago) link
i mean, that's kinda the standards i go by.
lol deej you're definition of star is broad as fuck
forks i'm willing to bet that wiz has already done that
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:36 (thirteen years ago) link
your*
I don't think it would be JUST because of "Black and Yellow," I know people who know every fucking song Wiz has done.
― altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:36 (thirteen years ago) link
i dont know the deal w/ venue sizes but im sure curren$y would sell out the metro in chicago just as easily as wiz did

obvi at this point we're slicing up some pretty thin hairs here, but i think curren$y has the exact same success in terms of being seen as an 'album artist'
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:37 (thirteen years ago) link
deej isn't right that he's more popular than wiz, but he is right that curren$y is more popular than you guys are giving him credit for
― The Reverend, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:38 (thirteen years ago) link
Who's not saying Curren$y is popular tho?
― altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:38 (thirteen years ago) link
lol there is no slicing of hairs when talking about "black & yellow" -- shit is a major hit
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:38 (thirteen years ago) link
I don't think anyone is saying that.

maybe. i mean, i certainly think national rap fame qualifies as 'star' but its easy to define star in a way that excludes wiz too. i dont feel like there are many fans out there who know/love wiz but dont know curren$y

thats not what i was slicing hairs about?
i dont think i said hes more popular than wiz either
i mean look - if these dudes are memorizing wiz lyrics surely they have the countless tracks where wiz & curren$y record together & tag-team verses? do they really think hes 'just some guy'?
i concede that, if you just know black n yellow, you may not know currensy
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:41 (thirteen years ago) link

this is only mildly true, but wrt this argument, wiz's mixtapes built a fanbase that made it possible to make a hit like "black & yellow" -- curren$y is an actual album artist in that he'll never have a 'hit single'
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:41 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, but his audience is starting to expand beyond just rap fans whereas currensy's is not.
― The Reverend, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:41 (thirteen years ago) link
so their success as 'album artists' is not exact
Sometimes I feel like "album artist" is a euphemism for "can't write a hit."

curren$y's mixtapes built that exact same fanbase!! this is what im saying.
xp i agree rev
this argument is what happens when mp3 downloading destroys the billboard chart popularity representations :(

no? its for 'fans memorize more songs than the singles' -- wiz is an 'album artist' too, to his fans

There's nothing stopping him from having hit singles other than his lack of ambition to do so. Like I said before, he already had a minor hit anyway.
― The Reverend, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:43 (thirteen years ago) link
like, as minor a hit as you can literally have

"black and yellow" has been doing consistently higher on the sales chart than the airplay chart tho.
― The Reverend, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link
southern radio was playing any old shit w/ wayne on it in 06
curren$y's mixtapes built that exact same fanbase!!
i don't see how this is true at all, but okay
― gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link
anyway i concede that wiz may have finally surpassed currensy but i maintain absolutely that currensy is much more popular than you guys make him out to be & has almost the exact same fanbase, sans the pop fans who jumped on board for black & yellow. i do concede wiz has a higher ceiling of star potential

dude half of wiz's tapes were recorded with currensy
wiz's first appearances were probably on currensy tapes -- wiz's original fanbase migrating from currensy's, not the other way around
― lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:46 (thirteen years ago) link

― altered boners (rennavate), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:46 (thirteen years ago) link
ren: i was talking about curren$y.
and "where the cash at" wasn't any less of a hit than "say yeah" was for wiz.
