tuomas what's your second fav stones song?? you seem like a moonlight mile guy to me
I don't really know much about the Stones, I just have a emotional attachment to "Sympathy for the Devil", because in the pub where we always hung out when we were younger (which sadly doesn't exist anymore), me and my friend Martta used to always put it on the jukebox, and then proceed to sing the "whoo-ooh!" backing vocals throughout the whole song, to everyone else's irritation.

The only Dean I can be certain I've heard is "That's amore" or whatever it's called. I must've missed hearing it on the radio amongst all the Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong.

Eh? It the Youtube for me.
Maybe people don't the exact version of "Sway" as sung by Dean Martin, but "Sway" as a composition is very well known. Even Björk has covered it.

Okay, so we began some chatter about a 50s tracks/singles poll yesterday and carried it a little bit over into today, and I was thinking...I don't really want to run another one of these until next year (like, May at the earliest). But what about opening a rolling nominations thread now? Just let it roll through the end of May, giving us approximately six months to consume and evaluate as much 50s music as possible, time permitting. Then we end up with a well-rounded list and an informed electorate, and the voting can then begin.
In short, long window for nominations, brief window for voting. No pressure...you've got six months. Sound appealing?

Nice to see these getting 7 votes each, including a 1st place for the former. I nommed them knowing they weren't Top 100 contenders but felt sure of at least a little beneath-the-radar support.
FWIW, I had "Moon In June" on my ballot until the very last cut. It very nearly had 2 votes!

You mean, "Yesterday" and "Tom Dooley"?

Fabulous to see a poll that genuinely got better as it got lower too, it was condensed solid gold by the end. No arguments from me whatsoever.

Heroes and Gimme Shelter are pretty popular songs of theirs! I mean I'm not a big fan of either, but I've heard those both a ton. Gimme Shelter has been used in like a bazillion films. Heroes was in a commercial, though prob just in the US?

I've never really listened to rock music (even when I was a teen I listened mostly to Eurodance and trance and rap), so I've never really dug deeper into that genre beyond the obvious hit tunes every one knows. I knew the Smith tunes because my ex was a huge Smiths fan, and some other things (like Joy Division) I've heard by hanging out with the sort of people who like indie rock. But that's about it for my knowledge of rock.

avert your eyes
It makes me sad I would've had to do a Top 340 countdown just to get my #1 in there.

So is anyone else into this idea...?
Okay, so we began some chatter about a 50s tracks/singles poll yesterday and carried it a little bit over into today, and I was thinking...I don't really want to run another one of these until next year (like, May at the earliest). But what about opening a rolling nominations thread now? Just let it roll through the end of May, giving us approximately six months to consume and evaluate as much 50s music as possible, time permitting. Then we end up with a well-rounded list and an informed electorate, and the voting can then begin. In short, long window for nominations, brief window for voting. No pressure...you've got six months. Sound appealing?― Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, December 3, 2010 5:28 PM (43 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

I'm 100% up for the poll. Also think a long period is a good idea, would give me time to research. But maybe leave it 'til new year before getting it up? I'm fatigued after this, it was kind of exhausting!
