Actually I, too, an surprised (surprised, not disappointed ;) ) that there is no James Brown. But I guess he fell in the split vote trap.

Guys are you ready for my list of 9848 songs that I'm SHOCKED no one voted for?

stone cold classics, each one

You seriously don't think "Sway" and "Milord" are classic tunes?

Tuomas, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:14 (thirteen years ago) link

there are more than 125 classic tunes, is the problem

peter in montreal, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean, it's not like I'm saying "OMG no one voted for this underground techno tune I nommed!", I'm wondering why no one voted for two songs that rank among the best-known songs of the 20th century, both of which have been covered hundreds of times.

Tuomas, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

tuomas didn't know you liked the stones! "sway" is classic all the way

EIEIoOoOO (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Never heard them, so obv not. Heard some Edith and blech. But it's more that I seriously do think there's 9848 songs that I'd put on this list instead of ones that are, just am not suprised no one else here thinks so.

it absolutely rules but come on, it's not like more than 5 of the ppl who vote in these polls would even remember its existence, let alone put it on a ballot

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:18 (thirteen years ago) link

i just flicked madly through the 25-1 cos i'm all stressed on the home front etc. very surprised by the top 2, would have liked to see donna pip them both.

my gripe is that, from what i remember screaming jay hawkins aside, where the fuck was the old time rock n roll? or robert johnson?

i've come to think that the vote splitting noms stuff is a red herring. and i go back to post of viceroy's way back when, that people will put stuff on a long list that they think should be in there, but when it comes down to the final pruning they will stick with the stuff they have the most attachment to.

which is all a.ok with me, otherwise this would be a poll of ilx posturing as rock critics which is not what ilx is about, whatever it might try to prove otherwise.

i guess i'm just sad that, having started with rock n roll as a kid in the late 70s, there ain't a single elvis/little richard/jerry lee/chuck etcetc track in the top 125. wtf people :(

and the vote splitting (sorry i'll shut up now) - didn't seem to harm new order, prince, beach boys etc etc.

the canon has moved on down the road, and the 50s are just an oil stain on the tarmac.

"Sway": I just can't imagine anyone living in the Western world for more than 20 years would have managed to miss it hearing it.

I don't really know much about the Stones, I just have a emotional attachment to "Sympathy for the Devil", because in the pub where we always hung out when we were younger (which sadly doesn't exist anymore), me and my friend Martta used to always put it on the jukebox, and then proceed to sing the "whoo-ooh!" backing vocals throughout the whole song, to everyone else's irritation.

Tuomas, Friday, 3 December 2010 22:25 (thirteen years ago) link

The only Dean I can be certain I've heard is "That's amore" or whatever it's called. I must've missed hearing it on the radio amongst all the Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong.

Eh? It the Youtube for me.

Maybe people don't the exact version of "Sway" as sung by Dean Martin, but "Sway" as a composition is very well known. Even Björk has covered it.

Okay, so we began some chatter about a 50s tracks/singles poll yesterday and carried it a little bit over into today, and I was thinking...I don't really want to run another one of these until next year (like, May at the earliest). But what about opening a rolling nominations thread now? Just let it roll through the end of May, giving us approximately six months to consume and evaluate as much 50s music as possible, time permitting. Then we end up with a well-rounded list and an informed electorate, and the voting can then begin.

In short, long window for nominations, brief window for voting. No pressure...you've got six months. Sound appealing?

231 The Associates - Party Fears Two 899
257 The Magnetic Fields - 100,000 Fireflies 844

Nice to see these getting 7 votes each, including a 1st place for the former. I nommed them knowing they weren't Top 100 contenders but felt sure of at least a little beneath-the-radar support.

FWIW, I had "Moon In June" on my ballot until the very last cut. It very nearly had 2 votes!

Amazing, amazing work Johnny & Sean, thank you so much. Best fun I could possibly've had this week. Thanks a million. Sorry I wasn't able to keep up and pitch in, but I wanted to make sure I heard it all in order. Was worth it.

Fabulous to see a poll that genuinely got better as it got lower too, it was condensed solid gold by the end. No arguments from me whatsoever.

You didn't use my clip for 'Gimme Shelter' though :(
