no black sabbath & no james brown & no parliament = staggering.

good poll tho johnny & seandalai, only a couple of songs I don't like.
thanks!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

agreed with the thanks!

skip, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Also yeah, cheers folks! :) Don't mind me and my occasional contrariness!

gospermaban sim gishel (acoleuthic), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

seandalai I mean.

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah seriously this the wettest, twee-est Beach Boys song ever

it makes "I Get Around" seem like death metal

(congrats on running this poll guys, good job)

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

can we vote on moka being right about #1 instead?

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, thanks for doing this!

Tuomas, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Quite surprised no Cure placed tbh.

babel on (pandemic), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

"I Get Around" is my favorite beach boys song!

captayn cronch (crüt), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

THANK YOU JOHNNY FEVER!

and all y'all, even if you don't like the boredoms near enough

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I am way more into this song if we're talking about the Beach Boys in sensitive crooning mode:

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't get Gimme Shelter at all but obviously a lot of ILMers do. "God Only Knows" is great but I prefer both the other Beach Boys tracks that have appeared (also prefer a bunch of other Beach Boys tracks).

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

yes! massive thanks to the poll runners, Johnny and Seandalai! This was loads of fun!

the structuralist constructions of (Viceroy), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah seriously this the wettest, twee-est Beach Boys song ever

you need to hear 'beach boys love you' (or I guess, don't need to)

iatee, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Should I post the full list on another thread?

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

thanks for giving me the extension and special thanks for all the work seandali did!

ZOUNDS! (CaptainLorax), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

OK, Gimme Shelter goes on a bit too long without doing much, maybe it isn't as good as that electrifying first minute and a half makes it out to be

Well done ILX for making the second-best song called God Only Knows its number 1

I'm honouring this btw:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcAEiGTEWpk

yeah that comment is me :D

gospermaban sim gishel (acoleuthic), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:26 (thirteen years ago) link

This has been a really good list with a worthy winner. Thanks to Johnny Fever and seandalai for putting this together.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Great job! A+++ would vote again.

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:26 (thirteen years ago) link

yes, then its easy to access in future
xp

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:26 (thirteen years ago) link

WOuld like to nom Johnny & Sean for the 2010 poll tbh.

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:26 (thirteen years ago) link

In My Room is great but it doesn't hold a candle to this for songs about good locations to be depressed in:

the structuralist constructions of (Viceroy), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

thanks for a quick, well run poll. I couldn't even keep up.

only voted for 'strange fruit,' 'the message,' and 'satisfaction' from the top 10.

I've tried to get into Television and the Beach Boys, but could never.

elis regina singing "aguas de marco," like Ignition Remix, makes fucking happy against my will.

I guess those are my favorite songs then.

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I just love the vocal arrangement on "In My Room" tbh

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I am a massive Beach Boys fanboy but voted for Good Vibrations and Don't Worry Baby over God Only Knows. not that God Only Knows isn't great but the vulnerability on DWB is IMO the key part of their early catalog aside from the surfing, girls and car.

skip, Friday, 3 December 2010 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah good rundown

Ectothiorhodospira shaposhnikovii (nakhchivan), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:27 (thirteen years ago) link

^ this. would happily sub out any of the joy div/new order/smiths on this list (no surprise there) for "fire in cairo" or "close to me"

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Yep, Shaggs for #1. Eric B & Rakim #2. It's not so much to ask, ILM.

The highest Elvis track was #196, and it was "Suspicious Minds". oh ilmpaws

Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

and "gimme shelter" is massive, towering, without blemish. sounded like all holy hell when i was a kid and still gives me chills in its final moments. will not hear a word said against it.

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Friday, 3 December 2010 21:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Gawd, so many of my votes missed by a whisker:

130 The Byrds - Eight Miles High
131 Afrika Bambaataa - Planet Rock
136 Wu Tang Clan - Protect Ya Neck
140 Art Ensemble of Chicago - Theme de yoyo
147 Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy

etc

wau, as brutal as y'all were to The Cure, you were even worse to poor Siouxsie

515 Pharoah Sanders - The Creator Has a Master Plan

I can't believe only 4 people besides me voted for this! I thought it was a certain lock for the top 100.
