ok that's good but it doesn't need a 1-minute intro, ditch the horns at the start and leave it to the piano imo

Tuomas I think The Meters verzh of "Wichita" will poke your buttons if you haven't heard it.
Oh yeah, that's the other version I've heard. I love The Meters a lot (why didn't I nominate "Hey Pocky A-Way" in this poll?!), but IMO "Wichita Lineman" isn't a song that matches their strengths.
― Tuomas, Friday, 3 December 2010 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link
Hang on, is there a different version of "Strange Fruit" where the composition isn't awesome and dramatic and sends tingles down your back that I've missed?
― absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link
maybe it's worth doing a 1900-1950s poll sometime in the future.
― prolego, Friday, 3 December 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link
is this the only pre-1950's song in the poll?
Clair de Lune ranked back in the 80s. So that's two. TWO SONGS FROM BEFORE 1950!!
― Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever)
Which begs for a second poll comprised of only pre-50's songs.

I go back to Wichita Lineman every couple years, thinking I'll get it, it'll finally hit me. Guess I'll wait another couple years now.

I thought I had grown out of musical protectionism but watching ppl blithely yammering on about butchering one of the greatest songs ever recorded is making my blood boil
xxxp: hawtt

really tho, forget the lyrical content and the tune still does these deep twisty things that let Holiday dazzle you with her voice. it is an absolute performer's song.
― absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link
Ha, ok I can get behind this one as well.

"Be My Baby" is fine but I figure it's a vote for the sound not that one track.
― absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah, 'be my baby' is pretty blissful.
― charlie h, Friday, 3 December 2010 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link
haha Dan I am saying it is a fantastic song! Just doesn't need the first 30 seconds imo - much more affecting when the piano comes in and spins its web and then Billie tells her tale

YAY for Marquee Moon and Good Vibrations
I get why people love Wichita Lineman but it involuntarily makes me WTF whenever it shows up in these kinds of lists.
Be My Baby, perfectStrange Fruit, perfect
I may have voted for every top 10 track except Wichita.

i love "be my baby", but it feels a bit anticlimactic at this point. liking the skew towards pre-70s stuff in the top 10, though.

― Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link
Be My Baby love is partly about the production, but mostly about Ronnie's voice. ZOMG
― Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link
No way it would be outside the top 125, so it has to be. I'm just hoping it'll be the actual #1 so that Beatles or Beach Boys won't win this. I don't hate either of those groups, but having them win would be the boringest thing ever.
