Seems criminal, right? xps

Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:46 (thirteen years ago) link

wait, did i miss gold soundz or is that still to come?

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I've come to terms with the fact that this poll will have no Elvis Presley.

now watch, the next track will be "Hound Dog"

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Gold Soundz is #1 I think.

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Gold Soundz is #2. That Modest Mouse song is #1.

Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:47 (thirteen years ago) link

also Johnny Fever 100% OTM about why pre-60s stuff gets lost in the shuffle. it's distant, so what survives seems too familiar, and what doesn't can be hard to see. and it's just vast. the amount of supposedly worthy music recorded in the 20th century is absolutely overwhelming, a sea that no one could ever become fully familiar with, no matter how much time they dedicated to the pursuit. the fact that this list is composed almost entirely of pop hits from the US and UK is testament to this. there are endless seas of music from elsewhere that we've never even heard of.

Well I guess some of us can stop watching the countdown now, thanks

Spectrist, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

is there honestly going to be no leonard cohen or zappa in this poll?

charlie h, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I thought #1 was going to be:

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Gimme Shelter
I Feel Love
Billie Jean
Wichita Lineman
Anarchy In The UK
Good Vibrations
Bohemian Rhapsody
Sex Machine

kornrulez6969, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

^^^ that would be boring. though the first two you mentioned deserve to be up there.

charlie h, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

which zappa song is among the best of the 20th century?

mookieproof, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

like, the point of voting for your favorite songs from a list of nominees isn't to flex about how broad your musical tastes are, it's to tell someone what your favorite songs are; doing otherwise is gaming the system and totally dishonest

― Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, December 3, 2010 11:39 AM (8 minutes ago) Bookmark

yes, but if your legitimate favorites are boring and narrow, then you are boring and narrow and deserve a vigorous pooh-poohing

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

gold soundz

ciderpress, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

The lack of Leonard Cohen is a heartbreaker. I voted for a couple of his tracks I think... (I know at least one).

the structuralist constructions of (Viceroy), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

....and You Set The Scene (although I'd dispute a coupla those) xps

gospermaban sim gishel (acoleuthic), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

was hoping for "white lines", tbph

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Just looking over the nominations list there's a few I thought would be in here for sure,

Walk On By
Say a Little Prayer
Son of a Preacher Man
Suspicious Minds

Definitely think we're waiting for two more Beach Boys songs, Wichita Lineman, Billie Jean and I Feel Love.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I think none of the songs I mentioned downthread will make it and I fear I'll have to keep my promise thus vetoing myself out of ILM for a while

Moka, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

well, i voted 'peaches en regalia' at #37, so that for starters. @ mookieproof

charlie h, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Didn't seandalai say 15 out of the top 25 are by artists that only appear once? Is anyone counting cards in this round?

Spectrist, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link

also no Scott Walker so far... another gross injustice.

the structuralist constructions of (Viceroy), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I Feel Love
Billie Jean
Be My Baby
God Only Knows
Satisfaction
another Beatles one
Anarchy In The UK

daavid, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link

which zappa song is among the best of the 20th century?

'Watermelon in Easter Hay' got points from me. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link

But yes I'll be sorely dissapointed if Gang of Four, Human League, The Normal or Can don't show up. Chances are very slim now but you never know.

Moka, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Thought all these would be certs for the 100:

Alone Again Or
Lost in Music
(I'm) Stranded
In the Midnight Hour
Tutti Frutti
Sex Machine

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Telstar too.

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:55 (thirteen years ago) link

also no Scott Walker so far... another gross injustice.

Cowbells Shakin' is a lock, bro.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:55 (thirteen years ago) link

omg i'm puking my guts out if Anarchy in the UK is #1

the structuralist constructions of (Viceroy), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think the Beach Boys will show up twice.... 'god only knows' is a given not sure if any other one of them will make it.

Moka, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Didn't seandalai say 15 out of the top 25 are by artists that only appear once?

Did I say this? It might be true but I'd have to check.

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:56 (thirteen years ago) link

No fucking way is "Anarchy in the UK" placing

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:56 (thirteen years ago) link

xxpost: JF said that.

i'm on board for gut-puking

ciderpress, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

It's maybe the 6th or 7th best Pistols single maybe.

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Marquee Moon could be a dark horse, people.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

'the long and winding road' is obviously #1

mookieproof, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

it better place. hoping alone again or will too

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost I would love to see Warm Leatherette in the top ten, it certainly is an important song and it wouldn't suffer from split voting. I voted Being Boiled quite high too.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 3 December 2010 19:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Did "Who Killed Bambi?" get released as a single? It's not as good as that for example.

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:58 (thirteen years ago) link

lol'ing at complaints there needs to be more arty white acts here

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:58 (thirteen years ago) link

the thing about The Sex Pistols is that they were a massively important, seminal band that were actually kind of terrible and unlistenable

basically hurray for all of the great acts they influenced/trailblazed for, but they themselves get the eternal gasface from me

09. THE BEACH BOYS "Good Vibrations" (1966) [2,510 points, 25 votes]

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

nah Pistols did a lot of great pop stuff but "Anarchy" is the boringest and least of it

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 20:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, my favorite BB song hands down.

Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 20:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Worthy placement for the Boys.
