JESUS YOU PEOPLE

TOO HIGH

Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I like that song but think it's overrated in their catalog

like, from that era, give me "Reel Around The Fountain" and/or "What Difference Does It Make?" any day

JESUS YOU PEOPLE

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

ooh, there's going to be some whining about this one. I voted for both This Charming Man and How Soon Is Now--we did manage to get the 3 most iconic Smiths songs on here at least.

skip, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Probably my least favourite of the "big" Smiths songs.

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

most iconic not necessarily implying the best

skip, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, TOO HIGH.

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i would have voted for it for sure under normal circumstances, but in the end didn't have the gall to vote a third smiths track.

charlie h, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:32 (thirteen years ago) link

It is perfect.

babel on (pandemic), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:32 (thirteen years ago) link

way TOO HIGH jeeez. ILX ur embarrassing yourself here.

the structuralist constructions of (Viceroy), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:33 (thirteen years ago) link

david cameron's favourite song!

prolego, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:33 (thirteen years ago) link

I guess I came at The Smiths from a really weird, oblique angle; I get "How Soon Is Now?" as an iconic track but, if asked to choose others, I'd probably pick "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "Panic", "What Difference Does It Make?" and "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" (and, for me personally, "Sweet & Tender Hooligan" and "Shoplifters of the World Unite").

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:34 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, 'this charming man' comes close to being a perfect song. though, 'william, it was really nothing' succeeds on that front even more so.

charlie h, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

"This Charming Man" is great! I didn't vote for it though.

captayn cronch (crüt), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

though it is a shame the whole "cardigan only, w/ pearl necklace" look never really caught on...

the structuralist constructions of (Viceroy), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:36 (thirteen years ago) link

"William, It Was Really Nothing" and "Bigmouth Strikes Again" are the two Smithsiest Smiths tracks to me.

captayn cronch (crüt), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:37 (thirteen years ago) link

This Charming Man is a perfect song. Perfect.

MJ was a paedo guyz.

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:37 (thirteen years ago) link

no he wasn't

captayn cronch (crüt), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:37 (thirteen years ago) link

oh yeah, forgot about "William"

also (don't hurt me) "Meat Is Murder"

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:37 (thirteen years ago) link

boy w/ thorn rubber ring for my part while we are on this

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

That's the first time I've heard that Althea and Donna track. Great song! Still, I gotta ask, better than I Want You Back?

Fetchboy, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

MIM was a jam

/vegetarian

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Wd take selected highlights of Moz's solo career over most of it now tbh

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

basically I think every Smiths song aside from large chunks of Strangeways is Smithsier than "This Charming Man", which probably says more about how I got into The Smiths than anything else

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:40 (thirteen years ago) link

don't misunderstand me I really like This Charming Man but its just funny to me that the supposedly 20th best song ever made in the 20th century is by The Smiths.

And MJ wasn't a pedo!

the structuralist constructions of (Viceroy), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Whereas Strangeways and the later singles and bits and bobs are most of all I care to hear now. But not any of them in the top 20 tunes of the century.

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:42 (thirteen years ago) link

19. OTIS REDDING "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" (1968) [2,219 points, 21 votes]

Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:42 (thirteen years ago) link

JUST RIGHT

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

woah tune for the ages

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

My Otis vote was "I've Been Loving You Too Long", but hell yeah.

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I love this, but it's not half as awesome as Try a Little Tenderness.

Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

my fav Smiths song is "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" and I'd say that it isn't as Smithsy as "This Charming Man" tbh

but after xposts I feel lame talking about the Smiths when OTIS REDDING is being discussed

captayn cronch (crüt), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Classic canon in its proper placing!

the structuralist constructions of (Viceroy), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I love this, but it's not half as awesome as Try a Little Tenderness.

OTM, especially the live versions.

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link

"Dock of the Bay" is why I don't vote on these things because clearly in good conscience it belongs to be about here on the poll but in the real world there's a ton of Otis songs I'd rather listen to.

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link

love how the bass line ebbs in and out like the water splashing. perfect song.

skip, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

It's great, but rather shamefully whenever I hear it the image of Reeves & Mortimer pops into my head now.

babel on (pandemic), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Another artist that I couldn't really pick a clear favourite song... Can't quibble with this placing though.

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

OTIS! If the whole top 20 is as perfect as the past two songs then <3 forever. Best whistle in all of recorded music.

Anyone else finding it weird how little #1 votes have shown up?

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

The next one has a first place vote.

Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

xp i suspect theres a lot of 'strategic voting' going on, consciously or not, where people use their top few votes on their less canonized personal favorites just in case its enough to catapult them into the poll

also unranked ballots dont have #1 votes

ciderpress, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Three #1 songs got just one vote.

seandalai, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

It seems that appearing on roughly 1/4+ of the ballots is more important than #1 spots.

babel on (pandemic), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

'This Charming Man' I got sick of for a while but then I started paying proper attention to the guitar line and now I love it again.

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

18. LAURIE ANDERSON "O Superman" (1981) [2,249 points, 20 votes, 1 first place vote]

TOO LOW

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Friday, 3 December 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

TOO AVANT-GARDE

Gavin in Leeds, Friday, 3 December 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

my number one was a personal kind of thing. i'd be very surprised if it wasn't able to pick up a vote elsewhere though.
