You need to listen to "midnight train to georgia" again. You oughta be embarrassed by what you wrote up thread. Maybe someday you will be. For your sake, I hope so.

I can totally understand how someone might shrug off "Midnight Train to Georgia" the first time they heard it, btw. Like a lot of pop-soul classics, the beauty is in the details.
― Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 05:50 (thirteen years ago) link
I'm sorry. I'm trying to be open-minded to other tastes, but the idea that Midnight Train to Georgia isn't an obvious contender for the top 25 is really upsetting to me at the moment. Maybe I'm being ridiculous.
― Two Red Ducks, Thursday, December 2, 2010 7:43 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark
well, you are being ridiculous. at least a little. not because it isn't deserving, but because it isn't anywhere near as universally known or celebrated as a whole bunch of other songs, even here on ILX. and while i know the song well, it doesn't do a lot for me, not even after a couple decades of familiarity. there are tons of songs i feel a whole lot worse about leaving off my ballot, like hundreds.

so no Can in the top 125 I guess, that's just not right

But Kraftwerk got three...so go figure.
― Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 06:00 (thirteen years ago) link
one of the great joys of this poll has been (re)discovering stuff and watching others do the same. like ismael k. freaking out over "sinnerman", and a whole bunch of people having their eyes opened to "i only have eyes for you". me too, fwiw. i remember cutting it from my ballot early on, looking at the title, thinking, "oh yeah, that one," and letting it go without a moment's regret. but my memory was so vague and denatured, accurate but empty. i mean, i remembered the words, the tempo, the outlines of a melody, but all the detail was gone, all the tone. it's a song that lives or dies on atmosphere and intimacy. have to admit that i was astonished when i went back and really listened to it, in response to others' astonishment. such a wonderful collective moment.

Flamingos had to be my #1.. I woulda been sad if it didn't place well.
― billstevejim, Friday, 3 December 2010 06:06 (thirteen years ago) link
I voted for it, but left it in the unweighted part of my ballot. I wish I would've given it some more points.
― Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 06:09 (thirteen years ago) link
gimme shelter has GOT to be on this list

it looks like the only stones song on my ballot was fucking "sympathy for the devil". this is [not retarded but a word that means the same thing yet is inoffensive], cuz "gimme shelter" is obviously the best thing they ever goddam did, by a country mile, a city mile, whatever kind of mile you got. both were on there until the very last second and i guess i wound up cutting the wrong one. fug.

I didn't save my ballot plus I was also slightly drunk when I made it so I can't be sure
― peter in montreal, Friday, 3 December 2010 06:34 (thirteen years ago) link
i mean, i like sympathy for the devil, like like a lot, but...
― phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Friday, 3 December 2010 06:40 (thirteen years ago) link
it's far from the most embarrasing thing about my ballot though. there's at least one vote on there (and one in particular) that makes me just wanna cringe myself into a little corner and die. you cut "gimme shelter" for that? louis armstrong for that?!?
― phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Friday, 3 December 2010 06:44 (thirteen years ago) link
CAN is most definitely making it.
― Moka, Friday, 3 December 2010 06:54 (thirteen years ago) link
"Roadrunner" is exactly the sort of rock song I will never learn to understand. Dude is a bad singer, there's no catchy melody, nor is the song rhythmically or sonically interesting.
was thinking this too as I was listening to it...comes down to it just not being my thing. I find my self agreeing with Tuomas' reactions here but amused by him seemingly being unable to realize that different people dig different musical things. Your yardstick(s) doesn't apply to them, dude.

I somehow couldn't see 20 people voting for "Halleluwah" but I'll be happy as shit if that actually happened.

put one vote to can, and it wasn't for that. no regrets.

I gave two Can votes, one for 'future days' and another for 'yoo doo right'. It wont feel like an ILM poll to me if Can doesn't place. Also think 'future days' is the one that has the most chance of making it but we'll see.
