I'm sorry. I'm trying to be open-minded to other tastes, but the idea that Midnight Train to Georgia isn't an obvious contender for the top 25 is really upsetting to me at the moment
I'd never even heard it til just now and it sounds like a pretty bog-standard R&B/discoey kind of track to me. Nothing special, and the kind of thing I find really boring in all honesty.

If it had been a part of your life for 30+ years, you'd feel differently. Maybe positive, maybe negative, but definitely differently.
― Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 04:44 (thirteen years ago) link
It's sort of amazing to me that people haven't heard 'midnight train to georgia' or 'I put a spell on you'.
But then again that Pulp track "common people" sounds absolutely boring to me and I never heard of it until that stupid pitchfork list

x-post
That's a very generously diplomatic response, but maybe it's also exactly on the mark. On the other hand, it doesn't explain the song's impact on me 30+ years ago when it hadn't been part of my life for 30 years.

On the subject of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" being redone in a way that Tuomas approves of, I was just clicking around youtube looking for covers and remixes and came across this. I actually don't hate it...

FWIW I dont get the love for Pulp in the *slightest*, and I was saturated in 80s-90s indie.
I dont much like the Smiths either FWIW (tho "there is a light" is lovely)

fwiw fwiw imo smdh
You need to listen to "midnight train to georgia" again. You oughta be embarrassed by what you wrote up thread. Maybe someday you will be. For your sake, I hope so.

I can totally understand how someone might shrug off "Midnight Train to Georgia" the first time they heard it, btw. Like a lot of pop-soul classics, the beauty is in the details.

I'm sorry. I'm trying to be open-minded to other tastes, but the idea that Midnight Train to Georgia isn't an obvious contender for the top 25 is really upsetting to me at the moment. Maybe I'm being ridiculous.
― Two Red Ducks, Thursday, December 2, 2010 7:43 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark
well, you are being ridiculous. at least a little. not because it isn't deserving, but because it isn't anywhere near as universally known or celebrated as a whole bunch of other songs, even here on ILX. and while i know the song well, it doesn't do a lot for me, not even after a couple decades of familiarity. there are tons of songs i feel a whole lot worse about leaving off my ballot, like hundreds.

so no Can in the top 125 I guess, that's just not right

― Señor Mexico (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 December 2010 06:00 (thirteen years ago) link
one of the great joys of this poll has been (re)discovering stuff and watching others do the same. like ismael k. freaking out over "sinnerman", and a whole bunch of people having their eyes opened to "i only have eyes for you". me too, fwiw. i remember cutting it from my ballot early on, looking at the title, thinking, "oh yeah, that one," and letting it go without a moment's regret. but my memory was so vague and denatured, accurate but empty. i mean, i remembered the words, the tempo, the outlines of a melody, but all the detail was gone, all the tone. it's a song that lives or dies on atmosphere and intimacy. have to admit that i was astonished when i went back and really listened to it, in response to others' astonishment. such a wonderful collective moment.

I voted for it, but left it in the unweighted part of my ballot. I wish I would've given it some more points.

it looks like the only stones song on my ballot was fucking "sympathy for the devil". this is [not retarded but a word that means the same thing yet is inoffensive], cuz "gimme shelter" is obviously the best thing they ever goddam did, by a country mile, a city mile, whatever kind of mile you got. both were on there until the very last second and i guess i wound up cutting the wrong one. fug.

i mean, i like sympathy for the devil, like like a lot, but...
― phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Friday, 3 December 2010 06:40 (thirteen years ago) link
it's far from the most embarrasing thing about my ballot though. there's at least one vote on there (and one in particular) that makes me just wanna cringe myself into a little corner and die. you cut "gimme shelter" for that? louis armstrong for that?!?
