Well, that's true. I'd probably rate HALF of the songs on Sign O The Times higher than Little Red Corvette, but that in no way diminshes what a tasty piece of pop songwriting it is.

40. PUBLIC ENEMY "Bring the Noise" (1987) [1,659 points, 16 votes]

yeah, i never really got "little red corvette", aside from being O_O at the lyrics as a kid. i mean, it's obviously a catchy song, but far from a personal favorite. would take the likes of "when doves cry", "erotic city", "when you were mine", "controversy", "kiss", "sexuality", even "raspberry beret" or "sign o' the times" over it.

2nd one of mine today.

P.E!!! Bought Nation of Millions on the back of, I think, NME calling it the greatest rock n roll album of the year. Love this.

Why are so many of these brilliant amazing genius songs showing up here??? It's a sin against god I tell ya

billstevejim, Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:10 (thirteen years ago) link

great tune, obv, tho I put my money/preference on Black Steel, which hopefully still has a chance?

kelolpapyrus (Pillbox), Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, I voted for 5 Public Enemy tracks, so hopefully Black Steel will show up.

I think this is the first poll in which I've participated and actually enjoyed the results. I also think this is the most whining I've ever seen in any poll results thread. If everyone wanted each artist represented once in the poll this should have been a best artists of the 20th century poll instead of a tracks poll. There are several songs and artists in this poll which I fucking hate, but I expected to see the Beach Boys, Beatles and shit turn up multiple times so what's the use in whining?

I rarely listen to any music made before 1967 and I am not going to apologize for not voting for music I rarely listen to. Besides, Esquivel wasn't nominated, none of my Serge Gainsbourg faves were nominated, my favourite Billie Holiday songs were given to other singers in the noms, etc. Also, just because something was first doesn't mean it was best.

Still hoping for an onslaught of Fall songs to really drive you all batty.

You didn't read this ILM poll, did you?

oops that should be a quote. Im not agreeing with him, haha

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:21 (thirteen years ago) link

bummed that i didn't get a chance to vote for "raise the roof", but very happy to see this show

& re ken burt: i realize that my axe grinding against a few decades of vaguely arty UK pop is kinda crazy, but i can't help it, i was drawn this way

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Regret not voting for this now, what a song.

yay

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Voted this cos it's great, and also for Peel tbh.

Hey Christian, Poulsen Sugar On Me (pandemic), Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't love this song as much as John Peel did (who does?), but I like it fine.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link

This song is a good time.

seandalai, Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:29 (thirteen years ago) link

running out of "fuck yeah!" over here. five of my favorites made it this morning alone. still feel like there's something i'm forgetting to complain about...

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link

You didn't read this ILM poll, did you?

Hah, I did. I voted in it, too.

Contenderizer I wasn't even thinking of you specifically. But to see so many people bitching after every entry gets posted is kinda annoying.

Kent Burt, Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Ok this is the first song in the whole list I really don't like. I don't even know why, it just annoys me.

Gavin in Leeds, Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:32 (thirteen years ago) link

tbh, the bitching is one of my favorite parts. Yet, EVERY TIME there's a new poll, people still vote the same way.

I learned from voting in another similar poll on another board some years ago *whew* that limiting yourself to one choice per artist isn't a great strategy if you want to see your favourite artists/tracks actually place. If you really dig something, you have to represent.

I voted (unweighted) for both "Black Steel" and "Burn Hollywood Burn" (which is a strong enough song to survive even Ice Cube's wretched cameo) but not "Bring the Noise"; could have, glad to see it place.

struggled with GIITH for a moment, then cut it without regret. still had "genius of love", after all. glad that others took up the slack.

Even if these results are a little too post-1960 centric, it would be a radio station I'd listen to all the time.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Think that's what we can aspire to.

Yeah, this is definitely true for me... as the list stands now, anyway. I am worried the top 25 will be a Beach Boys/Beatles golden oldies marathon (and I like the Beach Boys... just don't want to see five of their songs cluttering up the top end of the chart).

emil.y, Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Unlike 'How Soon Is Now', this one's not lost any of its shine over the years. Beautiful song.

Gavin in Leeds, Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

See I feel the exact opposite; I adored TIALTNGO when I first heard it but time has made it seem, well, I guess desperate and reaching? Whereas "How Soon Is Now?" is still as shattering as the first time I heard it.

I'd take the aggro Smiths songs over them, tho

Yeezy reupholstered my pussy (DJP), Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

From what I can remember of the Smiths noms I took 'How Soon Is Now?' and 'Queen Is Dead' over anything else.

babel on (pandemic), Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, "The Queen Is Dead", "Sweet and Tender Hooligan", "London"... I love it when they rock out

36. MARVIN GAYE "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" (1968) [1,863 points, 16 votes]

babel on (pandemic), Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, "The Queen Is Dead", "Sweet and Tender Hooligan", "London"... I love it when they rock out

'What She Said' is another good one.

Gavin in Leeds, Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Second of my votes to place today! Love Marvin.

seandalai, Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link

'The Queen Is Dead' would've been my Smiths pick too. Still love 'There Is a Light' though, especially the shimmering outro.

Craigo Boingo, Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link

"There's a Light..." is every 16 year old girl's fave Smiths song. Great song, but still.

kate78, Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd never seen this Montreux performance before, but wow.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 2 December 2010 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link

There Is a light yt single handedly chose my nights listening. Gonna go to work with hatful of hollow and the queen is dead and shuffle away further into my physche
