Zimbabwean cotton yarn is dyed using the labor intensive, classic rope dyeing technique involving a series of dips into indigo vats followed by sun drying (dipped 19 times). While most jeans makers today use right-hand twill denim, KMW denim is made in a selvedge 13.5 oz. left-hand twill. KMW fabric is woven on pre WWII American built wooden shuttle looms.

sadly no, everything is either drop-crotch harem pants or incorporating empire-girdles.

four weeks pass...

I want to buy some APC jeans but unfortunately nowhere sells them here so I can't try them on. this wouldn't ordinarily be an issue except... I recently bought some 32" waist zara jeans that fit nice however I picked up some 32" cos cords and though I can get them shut they're unbearably tight.

should I just go with the 32" in the APC knowing that I'll size down a bit as we come out of winter and they'll stretch out a bit?

joran van der snood (cozen), Sunday, 2 January 2011 19:21 (thirteen years ago) link

wish there was a "waistline Vs. actual waistline" infographic which took in zara and cos though I suspect cos' trousers are true to size.

joran van der snood (cozen), Sunday, 2 January 2011 19:23 (thirteen years ago) link

side question: are the uniqlo japan jeans decent? and is the japan slim fit similar to the APC new cures or new standards?

joran van der snood (cozen), Sunday, 2 January 2011 21:02 (thirteen years ago) link

haha well how unbearable is 'unbearable'? apc tends to fit p true to size ime (i.e. less generous than probably zara) although i guess the cords might fit differently...

... i really cant answer this qn, sry :/

ban (Lamp), Sunday, 2 January 2011 21:38 (thirteen years ago) link

the zaras I had did seem a little 'bigger' than other brands (though I had pants and not jeans)

right now my only pair of jeans is a pair of uniqlo selvedge based on steve shasta's recs and I like them a lot

dayo, Monday, 3 January 2011 00:35 (thirteen years ago) link

anyone have any tips for sealing in jean color? I bought these AE flares on ebay and while they're surprisingly bitchin in color and form they are a saturated dark wash and I find my hands blue after wearing them for an hour or two. I really don't want them to fade.

calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Monday, 3 January 2011 14:18 (thirteen years ago) link

coz:
sounds like apc 32" will be comfortable, shouldn't be as unbearable as your Zara cords.
uniqlo denim are probably the best value jeans out there, in partic. if you are seeking japanese selvage denim.

ss:
you are describing "crocking" where the dye isn't set properly and causes bleedage. a quick rinse in (very) cold water should get most of the dye to bleed out but should not damage the richness of the denim. the key to keeping the dye set is to avoid washing/drying. neither cotton nor indigo are very colorfast so minimize the time in the wash/dryer to avoid fading.

actually found somewhere in town that does APC today and tried on the 32. were fine (but black) so going to cop some indigo online

joran van der snood (cozen), Monday, 3 January 2011 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

w/ my last pair of colour-bleedy jeans i took the internet's advice and put them on a short cold wash, inside out, no detergent but half a cup of white vinegar, then hung them to dry indoors. it seemed to work - the colour's still dark and doesn't rub off on white bags any more.

measure the actual waist of a pair of jeans that fit correctly
APCs run two inches larger in the waist than tagged size, and can stretch another inch or two beyond that

so if your actual waist = 36" you probably want a 33 in APC

ehhh, this is gray territory as everybody's idea of "fit" is not the same, some people enjoy an ultra skin tight girdle effect, others like to sag around their knees. APC use unsanforized denim that is "true to size" (ie, not ShrinkToFit), although there was a trend a few years ago to really undersize which would make for people squeezing into the smallest jeans possible, but that's a separate sport. I've owned about 10 pairs of APCs and they've all fit in the comfortable range of the size spectrum. YMMV.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:12 (thirteen years ago) link

My size 36 APC New Standards measured 38" unworn and stretched rapidly to where they were downright baggy (if I'd known more then, I would have gotten a 35). Online shop measurements generally back that up - add two inches to tagged size to get the unworn waist. (and the denim is sanforized)

That's why I figure matching the actual waist size of some comfortable jeans to the actual waist of some APCs minus an inch or two (so that it would ultimately stretch to equal the other jeans, since the APCs won't be constantly washed like most people's Gap/etc. jeans) is the safest route.

that is odd but i have to admit i haven't bought a pair of APCs in a very, very long time, i hope they aren't vanity sizing :-/

in other news that shop also sells Momotaro Jeans outside of Japan which is crazy to see! I got a chance to tour their factory in Kojima in 2001 (maybe 2003?), that is a pretty dope operation they have got going. Really amazing attention to quality.

I am so fucking fed up with jeans. I just bought a pair that fit like a glove in the store and the first time after being washed but after a couple hours they're too loose and bagging out in places.

Also, was it Levis that would make you jeans in your exact proportions? How much is that. I think I'm about at that point. Do they still do that?

also lol

More than half of women (54 percent) try on at least 10 pairs of jeans to find one pair they would buy.

Maybe this is my problem. I hate clothes shopping and trying on clothes in particular. I don't have the patience.

ENBB, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link

you should by jeans that are too tight

max, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

that way when they loosen up they fit

max, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I just wear whatever version of a Levi's low-rise skinny jean I can find in my size and in Short for not more than $60. Maybe 2% stretch or so certainly doesn't hurt.

Very grateful to whomever started cutting the asses of women's jeans higher than the bellies -- I need far less coverage in the front.

x-post Yeah I know but then I always get worried and then they're not going to loosen up and I'll wind up with too tight jeans and buyer's regret. :( Oh screw it. Next time I'll go tighter.

Yeah I don't think these have enough stretch. Also bought regular length which is ok because I'm wearing flats but I couldn't wear bought with these. DAMN YOU JEANS! One day I'll find my perfect match. One day.

ENBB, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i used to have that same fear, and then i bought a pair of jeans that seemed way too tight, and i was afraid to wear them out, but then i did, and in like 3 hours they fit perfectly, so

max, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 21:07 (thirteen years ago) link

enbb, i recommend madewell rail straight. really good cut, not too tight, though the lighter washes stretch out more.

also can i say that acne jeans are horrible and the sizing is insane

daria-g, Thursday, 17 February 2011 01:11 (thirteen years ago) link

uhhhh, men's jeans <> women's jeans.

save up for APCs, ENBB. they're my gal's favorite, she has a few pairs and loves them (because they are not lycra/poly blend like 99% of womens jeans). not cheap tho, and if you're impatient you may hate them at first.

cozey, <3 those rapha's, even *I* shudder at the price tag though, holyyyyyyyy.....

i cannot wait to buy a new pair of real jeans for spring! maybe they will be apc and maybe i will buy them in nyc

You all know I'm a budget jeans gal and also p curvy in the ass etc so I usually get mad at all those upmarket slim/straight brands, but I'm going able to do some nice stuff in March and maybe checking out the world of nicer jeans will be one of them. We'll see. Rrrrob, I will def go to APC w you, though!

Hm I wonder if I got the rail straights in a big enough size and had them hemmed at a cropped length, if they would work for me? Going on the list!

nyc gals also check out uniqlo's unisex denim, tho ymmv with their purely women's line.

Pretty sure Uniqlo isn't an option for me, I don't think their sizes go large enough. Tried it once, a few years back.

one year passes...

So upthread, someone mentioned about apc's lasting 10 years or whatever. Do people wear these (or other expensive, high quality jeans) to do yard work or otherwise live an active outdoor lifestyle? Or are they primarily just worn as urban casual wear?

how's life, Sunday, 20 May 2012 14:31 (eleven years ago) link

I can't afford expensive, high quality jeans (bitter) so I just get Tommy Hilfiger skinny jeans at Macy's. Honestly, they have been the fitting jeans I have ever owned. That isn't saying much though.

I have a really bad relationship with jeans. At a year old I was given my dad's old, vintage baby pair of Levi's that my mother later cut (mutilated and killed) and turned into shorts. UGH! Would love that pair now for my little girl. Also, because it was the first and last time I was ever in and owned a cool pair of jeans.

At 7 my grandmother bought me a pair with a huge parrot embroidered all the way down the right pant leg and had a matching vest with parrot. Then at 9 I had a pair of Del Rio Jeans, ugh! Made in Del Rio, TX and they had a huge faux leather tag stitched on the back that broadcasted I was proudly wearing poorly designed jeans made in the armpit of Texas. They were snug at the waist with really wide legs that never tapered, just BIG all the way down. I got made fun of when I wore them to school on the day we didn't have to wear uniforms.

Wore 501's most of my adult life. Sad story, me and jeans. Always wanted a nice, selvedge pair that fit perfectly and yes, that were mega pricey. Oh, before Macy's, bought my jeans at Target! How's that for fuckin sad :(

I realized the other day that the jeans I was wearing (from the Banana Republic sale rack; trouser style, I guess you'd call them) were putting me dangerously close to Mom Jeans territory :(

i am kind of tired of covering my body below my waist. no matter what i buy, it is always slipping down off my bony ass. if i buy slim, it hugs my thighs in unpleasant ways. if i buy high waisted it cuts off blood flow to my spare tire. i am going to sell all my $300 jeans and switch to sweatpants and muu muus
