This is the last tie, btw. It's clear sailing all the way from 56 down to 1.

Love the opening 30 secs of this, and the rest really. 1,2,3 and to the 4

Hey Christian, Poulsen Sugar On Me (pandemic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

These guys show up in some poll like every single day!

clemenza, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Look how YOUNG Snoop is, damn. He's just a baby!

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Excellent song all around, and appears almost exactly where I voted for it (#53).

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

really the last iconic rap tune. ok maybe that one by 50c is a contender.

Chester, Your Majesty (kelpolaris), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

no iconic rap tunes between 1992 and 2003??

skip, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

"California Love" sure was.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I would argue "The Real Slim Shady" was also iconic.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Sugarhill Gang, people.

Moka, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Between 1992 and 2003?!

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:17 (thirteen years ago) link

"Regulate" too

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:17 (thirteen years ago) link

"Gangsta's Paradise" too, for better or worse.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

"get low"

hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

"stay fly"

hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:19 (thirteen years ago) link

hypnotize?

ciderpress, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Usher/Lil Jon's "Yeah!" was in the top 10 for like 100 weeks or something.

for the next throbbing minutes (corey), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link

those are all great but name one you can play to an 8 year old and find that they recognize that song immediately

Chester, Your Majesty (kelpolaris), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:21 (thirteen years ago) link

"get low"?

hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd have to think that "California Love" and "Regulate" are as recognizable as "Nothin But a G Thang" but I guess I could be wrong.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Perhaps I am out of touch with 8 year olds but I seriously doubt most 2nd graders have heard "Nuthin but a G Thang".

skip, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

but my opinion doesn't actually bear research, it's more of a definition "imo" statement from general observance in my lyfe

Chester, Your Majesty (kelpolaris), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Depends on the 8 year-old.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

57. (TIE) NINA SIMONE "Sinnerman" (1965) [1,447 points, 14 votes]

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:23 (thirteen years ago) link

"a milli"?

prolego, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:24 (thirteen years ago) link

xxpost

Gotta say, my 7 year old son loves music but would never recognize any of those. Maybe next year?

And to think I imagined he'd be just like that little kid in the video...

Moodles, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:24 (thirteen years ago) link

pretty sure i've heard california love and gangsta's paradise each more times in my life than g thang, both before and since i started listening to rap

ciderpress, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I heard Wierd Al's version of gangster's paradise before the actual, but I know as likely one of the younger members here (yes its apparent hurr hurr) me and buds were definitely listening to this (g thang) while we did our homework and ate our carrot snacks

Chester, Your Majesty (kelpolaris), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:26 (thirteen years ago) link

circa when i was 10

Chester, Your Majesty (kelpolaris), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link

anecdotal evidence doesnt change the fact that if you think this was the last iconic rap song you've probably been willfully ignoring rap for a while

ciderpress, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Hey, I sure do like that Nina Simone song.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Cool, I cut 'Sinnerman' from my list in my last bit of pruning so I'm glad other people voted for it.

As for 'Paranoid Android', I still like OKC as an album a lot but that song's appeal's been weakened by overplay for me.

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:34 (thirteen years ago) link

xp It's taken everyone 10 minutes to listen to it! It's a stunning song, not sure I had heard it before.

seandalai, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:35 (thirteen years ago) link

didn't vote for sinnerman but what a track.

skip, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:35 (thirteen years ago) link

xxp same for a lot of these so far, but it was a revelation the first time I heard OKC.

for the next throbbing minutes (corey), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i regret my opinion after reading mention of eminem - totally forgot the guy and how wildly slim shady instilled itself into pop culture

Chester, Your Majesty (kelpolaris), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Sad tale: I got into Nina Simone after watching that Bridget Fonda movie Point of No Return. At least something good came out of watching it.

Inland Empire for me (though I actually liked the film too).

56. THE BEACH BOYS "Wouldn't it Be Nice" (1966) [1,460 points, 12 votes]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L--cqAI3IUI

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, tough to argue with this one, though I personally chose another Beach Boys track to vote for.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Too low!

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Probably my favourite track on Pet Sounds (and an all-time classic album opener) but, yeah, I voted for a different Beach Boys song.

Gavin in Leeds, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Great to see Nina Simone here. I voted for that, and obviously it's a titanic track, but I think I would probably have gone with 'Wild Is The Wind' in its place if that had been nommed.

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

not one of the Beach Boys tracks I voted for but approve wholeheartedly!

skip, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Both the Beach Boys songs I voted for have now made it. I always preferred Wouldn't It Be Nice to God Only knows but I will be more than happy when that appears in the top ten later.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Turns out I didn't vote for this. My one Beach Boys song is sure to appear later.

Barf out, people!

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

u crazy. This song is godhead.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Were there any other songs with 2 first place votes or was this the only one? Seems pretty crazy to me, I like the song OK but wouldn't have thought to put it in my top 100.
