general rule of thumb - pluralize as you would in the language youre speaking not the one from which the word originates - stadia is pretty fun tho
― ice cr?m, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 16:35 (thirteen years ago) link
stadia is the plural of stadium in English

stadia is the plural of stadium in greek, in english we add an s to the end of a word to pluralize it

― modrić in paradise (blueski), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link
although it derives from the greek stadion (στάδιον) it is actually directly from the Roman 3rd declension noun stadium. so it declines:
stadiumstadiumstadiumstadiistadio stadio
stadiastadiastadiastadiorumstadiisstadiis
of course στάδιον is second declension neuter in ancient greek so has the plural στάδιοᾰ in any case but one has to get these etymological routes right.
(this brit can get snootier, finally my classical education becomes useful for pwning people on the internet)

ed now picture me speaking slowly to yr inbred english self - imagine yrself pluralizing every loan word as it is in its native tongue - that would be ridiculous - which is why you dont do it - there are however a few greek and latin words for which you fetishize the pluralization - why do you do this - its because you think it make you look smart

It's how we built an empire, elevating the wisdom of the ancients through latin and greek pluralisation, that and beating boys in school.

Yep, you guys have even blown the bookies away - no-one's taking bets on 2022 anymore.
England now universal favourites for 2018 btw, as the patriotic wall of money creates a surge only previously seen in the team's odds prior to every major tourney ever. Good omen I reckon.

Nah mate, it's our fault. We really didn't promise anything exciting or go on about taking the Cup to a new continent/region much.
Also, we forgot to bribe anyone.

an acquaintance of mine, just back from a tour at the USAF base in doha, on qatar:
True, there is no alcohol... men and women can not ride in the same taxi, even if you are married. They have people that walk through their hotels listening at doors to make sure that no one is having sex, they will confiscate the dvd of Beerfest because of the cover art, it is not discrimination exactly but less than 500,000 of their population are "citizens" (out of 1.35 mil) the rest are what you could call minorities of ethnic ambiguity. Ratios are 4-1 men to women... did I mention there is no alcohol? On the plus side there is little to no crime, they will not make the World Cup itself, they will pay for most everything FIFA wants. This is going to be the best World Cup ever!YAY FIFA!

Australia does everything it can to collude against football in this country (especially broadcasting), most of the people here STILL insist it's called 'soccer' and that various codes of deformed rugby are 'the REAL football' (the code to which this applies is wholly dependent on the state you're in at the time) and the rest of the entire planet is 'wrong', and to top it off we just submitted a bid video featuring PAUL HOGAN. Qatar probably deserved this despite its offensive conservatism/racism/prohibition.

I mean if I were on the committee and I saw the way Australia treats football and had to choose between it and a pumpkin, I'd be looking at the merits of a pumpkin, honestly.

but hosts do no longer qualify automatically? sort of bummed about that, as i was going to predict Qatar advancing through group stage thanks to 2 dubious referee decisions (one referee from Guinea, one from Tahiti) as well as 7 naturalized Brazilian players.
― Ludo, Friday, 3 December 2010 09:19 (thirteen years ago) link
In retrospect, Japan/S.Korea had both hosted World Cup too recently and, frankly, it was never going to go to Australia which left the USA and Qatar. The USA are getting the next tournament.
