Is that really what the 20th century sounded like?

pretty sure the idea wasn't to find the most representational tracks of the 20th century but the most liked by ILXors.

let's hope the aliens don't use this list as a reference guide when they arrive. whatever will they think of us :(

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

tbh, I think the results could've done with more variety in both styles and eras, but we get what we get.

i like the feel of the list so far, sure, there's the odd couple of things in there i don't get, but most of this stuff is undeniably great. really sorry 'purple haze' didn't find its way onto the noms list. i think it should be sitting where 'voodoo chile' is.

Tuomas will hate this next one, maybe more than anything else on the poll. Conversely, Geir will do a backflip!

Aguas de Marco is nice too. Anyone want to fill me in?

purblind snowcock splattered (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:14 (thirteen years ago) link

None of my tracks showed up today (except "Search and Destroy"), though there were lots of good ones. I've had 9 so far:

Henry Mancini — Moon River (Breakfast at Tiffany's)
Claude Debussy — Clair de Lune (Suite Bergamasque)
Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto — Girl From Ipanema
Madonna — Into the Groove
Nirvana — Smells Like Teen Spirit
The Velvet Underground — Heroin
Johnny Cash — Folsom Prison Blues
Iggy and The Stooges — Search and Destroy
Link Wray and His Ray Men — Rumble

According to my half-assed count, I voted for 18 pre-1950 tracks, plus a few more from the 50's. Still hoping to see a couple more of those showing up.

i bet the minor threat song i did actually nominate didn't get many votes :(

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, even i didn't find space for it

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Yep, "Close To The Edge" is absolutely brilliant. :) Although "Supper's Ready" is better. :)

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

That Minor Threat song I must admit I have never heard of, but it fit perfectly into the discussion right now.:)

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah, the second track I voted for! Was VERY low on my ballot, though. I still love Yes, but I love them less now I've heard so much better shit done in the name of art-rock

and CTTE ain't their peak

but it's got some cool bits, so I threw it a few points, 2 more than I threw Hungry Like The Wolf

gospodin sim gishel (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:49 (thirteen years ago) link

now screw y'all for voting CTTE but not Moon In June which is approx. 9892874982734729384702340237402378424023742 times better

gospodin sim gishel (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:50 (thirteen years ago) link

:D When did you get into Soft Machine LJ?

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:52 (thirteen years ago) link

DUDE

we're talking about my NUMBER ONE SONG OF THE 20TH CENTURY AND BY EXTENSION ALL TIME here

link to thread of much LJ spaffing: Soft Machine - "Moon In June": Classic Or Dud?

gospodin sim gishel (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link

btw, sage that you are, you ended up being totally OTM about Awaken as Yes' finest hour - gave it way more points than CTTE :)

gospodin sim gishel (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:54 (thirteen years ago) link

it's aight. to be honest i've only played "To Be Over" in the last 12 months I think. :D

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:54 (thirteen years ago) link

played it a lot tho. Yacht Yes.

absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:54 (thirteen years ago) link

LJ, you can SB everyone on this thread because Moon in June got 1 vote.

seandalai, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:55 (thirteen years ago) link

and yeah, my dad had Third lying around the house and I listened to it when teenaged and my mind backflipped into infinity. Recently I listened to it again with a lyrics-page open and my mind backflipped once more. Actually, that song never fails to blow me away. Key listen was in the car, at night, aged about 18 fwiw

lol wtf you're all savages - although my proud ILX poll habit of a 1st-placer with no other votes lives on

gospodin sim gishel (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:56 (thirteen years ago) link

To Be Over is great! Second-best track on their best album.

gospodin sim gishel (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 14:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Re 'St Elmo's Fire' - I first heard it via a cover by the short-lived Uilab, only discovered last year that it was a cover

I think I heard the Uilab version first, too, which is one of the reasons why it didn't take my Eno slot. (Also, I don't think Uilab were ever intended to be anything other than a short-lived one cover supergroup - not that you're necessarily saying otherwise, just that 'short-lived' suggested a grief that they didn't run for longer.)

I already apologised upthread for forgetting to vote for 'Moon in June'. It was something I meant to include.

emil.y, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 15:09 (thirteen years ago) link

we're 1-1 for my Dr Who abstention, as similarly established :P

gospodin sim gishel (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 15:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Yay for Big Star! sounds like that's it besides September Gurls but good to see two tracks at least.

Yep. Ui was with Sasha Frere-Jones, right? I'm sure I've heard some of Ui's other work, but I can't remember whether any of it was good.

seandalai, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's right - Uilab being Ui and Stereolab, for those who can't keep up. Haven't listened to Ui for a long time, but they definitely did some other good stuff, and I remember seeing them play and being impressed.

emil.y, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 15:20 (thirteen years ago) link

voted Transmission (third song from my ballot to make it so far) and love Genius of Love, Care of Cell 44 and St. Elmo's Fire.

this part of the list was kind of an white arty orgy. the only "race" record being Brazilian and Yes placing this high is only icing on the cake. stopped expecting cool things from this list frankly.

gospodin simmel, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 15:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Not thrilled with this run, though I'm happy to see "Águas de Março."

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 15:41 (thirteen years ago) link

'Transmission' was also the third from my ballot. Couldn't leave Joy Division off, sorry.

emil.y, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

xp Fair point - though 70-79 is by far the whitest batch of 10 in the list.

seandalai, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 15:44 (thirteen years ago) link

wtf is a "race" record?
