Finn speaks out against skinny white guys.

3:10 to Your Ma (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:48 (thirteen years ago) link

"In Every Dream Home a Heartache" was my Roxy vote.

seandalai, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Hopefully not, we've had enough skinny white guys in a row already.

You must have missed the part yesterday where we discovered an error in the tabulation, bumping the Iggy & The Stooges song up to #73. In other words it's no mystery that Iggy is coming up next.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:52 (thirteen years ago) link

^^ mine too. i also had another roxy song in there that wasn't 'virginia plain'. x-post

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Surely Kraftwerk are also skinny white guys? But rock????

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:54 (thirteen years ago) link

JF: I know, I was trying to be sarcastic. (The sentiment was real, nevertheless.)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Who said "rock"?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm just hoping that this arty/indie canon stretch ends soon and we can get back to some other stuff. Some pretty rad songs in here though.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:56 (thirteen years ago) link

"In Every Dream Home a Heartache" was my Roxy vote.

― seandalai, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:50 (5 minutes ago)

and me

if this is arty then give me death tbh

gospodin sim gishel (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:57 (thirteen years ago) link

xp - I did, I guess. I think Kraftwerk have been adopted into the same canon as Roxy/MBV/Bowie, which I guess is more of a "rock fan" canon than a "rock music" one.

3. IGGY & THE STOOGES "Search and Destroy" (1973) [1,351 points, 15 votes]

++++++++++++++++++++++

72. ELIS REGINA & ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM "Águas de Março" (1974) [1,352 points, 11 votes, 1 first place vote]

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:58 (thirteen years ago) link

oops, that should be 73. on Iggy, der.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 12:58 (thirteen years ago) link

That's not the Elis Regina tune I voted for, but it's a good song, and I'm glad it broke the arty white dude domination.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:00 (thirteen years ago) link

xp - "Virginia Plain" is great and all, but for me it's not too far from Bowie or some glam stomper. The dynamics of "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" are on another level imo.

seandalai, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:00 (thirteen years ago) link

First song which is new to me and what a treat it is.

State Attorney Foxhart Cubycheck (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Voted for "Águas de Março" on the back of the Campaigning thread, really happy to see it here.

seandalai, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:01 (thirteen years ago) link

genuinely arty white dudes be suing this poll

gospodin sim gishel (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:04 (thirteen years ago) link

That's seven songs in a row from the '70s. Hopefully the next song comes from a different decade. (Oh wait, I've seen the list! And it does!)

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:05 (thirteen years ago) link

h8 wite ppl

lex eduction horror (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:06 (thirteen years ago) link

but is it an arty white dude, is the real question

iatee, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:07 (thirteen years ago) link

if that was the only jobim song that could get on this poll than fair enough i guess

lex eduction horror (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:07 (thirteen years ago) link

"Girl from Ipanema" was in the top 125 too.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:08 (thirteen years ago) link

933. Proper Arty Dudes - "Something in 11/4 time" (1971). (200 points, 1 vote)

71. THE ZOMBIES "Care of Cell 44" (1968) [1,355 points, 13 votes]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWfRbW-ObHk

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:11 (thirteen years ago) link

nice. but not the zombies i voted for.

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Who saw that coming instead of a "Leave Me Be" or "She's Not There" or even a "Time of the Season"? Not me, and I like this song just fine.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

or... or even 'beechwood park'

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:14 (thirteen years ago) link

That went over well.

70. BIG STAR "Thirteen" (1972) [1,362 points, 14 votes]

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:27 (thirteen years ago) link

i kinda predicted there'd be some vote-splitting going on with the old zombies. interesting to see 13 people repping behind that song.

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:27 (thirteen years ago) link

thirteen. total classic. think it was one of the songs i felt bad about culling.

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't remember if I put "Thirteen" in the weighted or unweighted portion of my ballot, but listening to it now I'm sure I didn't give it enough points (eleventybajillion!).

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i like how almost every song on that zombies album is built around an unusual chord change. cell 44 flaunts it a bit more than the others

ciderpress, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I do love Thirteen, I thought September Gurls would be the Big Star song to make it. Same with The Zombies really surprised that is more popular than Time Of The Season.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

given september gurls was #9 on my ballot, i'm still holding out hope!

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Very happy to see this place, hummed and hawed before putting it at #2. In general I think Big Star are a little overrated but this is just 24 carat genius.

State Attorney Foxhart Cubycheck (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:33 (thirteen years ago) link

In general I think Big Star are a little overrated but this is just 24 carat genius.

Ditto. I voted for "September Gurls" (which I'm sure will be high), but "Thirteen"'s great.

Great stuff,KEEP IT COMING!

nakamura, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:40 (thirteen years ago) link

reminds me of 'chewing gum'

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Would have voted for that, but felt a bit guilty with Talking Heads already on my ballot. Which is silly of me I know.

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, Tom Tom Club! They had much better dance tunes than Talking Heads.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:44 (thirteen years ago) link

serious

charlie h, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Great stretch here of three songs I didn't vote for but easily could have. My fave Zombies is "Maybe After He's Gone", which wasn't nominated, but this was the best of the nominated ones. Not sure why I didn't vote for "Thirteen", looking over my ballot I like it more than several tracks I did vote for. Whoops.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:46 (thirteen years ago) link

"Care Of Cell 44" was one song I voted for (and nominated) that I actually never dreamt about ending up this high. Well deserved though, of course.:)

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Couple more, then I'm going on hiatus for a few hours...

68. JOY DIVISION "Transmission" (1979) [1,379 points, 14 votes]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orQ73TOhfMQ

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Kind of an overrated band imo but that song is 100% stellar.

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Bah! I was hoping that the stretch of this poll would ensure it'd be less dominated by rock than the previous decade-width polls, but I guess not...

Tuomas, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Tom Tom Club! I think this may be my favourite pop/dance song of all time.

seandalai, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 13:59 (thirteen years ago) link

"Transmission" is unfuckwithable and obviously too low. Always loved that Something Else clip and the John Cooper Clarke intro/outro.
