a) gray's papaya, 6th ave and 8th st
b) koronet pizza, 110 and bway
c) steak?

gabbneb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 17:24 (seventeen years ago) link

b and c) anywhere, really

gabbneb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 17:24 (seventeen years ago) link

i think i need to address my diet as i've frequently been craving red meat lately which i've never really done before.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

b) Di Faras. No other pizza is worthy. Any of the classic brick oven places will do in a pinch, Lombardis, Patsys, Grimaldis. If you want just your average street slice there's places like those on Bleeker that are decent, and every hood has a few that standout, but the risk is you'll get something nasty. Di Fara's is worth the trip, get on the Q train during the week and go out for lunch. Google for more info.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

and it'll be the last glance youll get at whatused to be coney island

bb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 17:37 (seventeen years ago) link

peter luger steakhouse will hurt your bank account but not fatally. it's worth it imo.

been to the bar at keens plenty of times for the sick selection of bourbons but never ate there

I don't really think there is such a thing as a budget steakhouse in nyc. if you just want something more basic and not a big porterhouse, someplace like Steak Frites in Union Square or any french bistro type joint should be fine ....

dmr, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Lucien on 1st is a good bistro steak place

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:23 (seventeen years ago) link

NO NO NO to steak frites. i think it was probably good once upon a time, but it's seriously mediocore to bad now and also very pricey. the eponymous entree is about $30, which makes it more than steak for two at peter luger (i'm pretty sure) when you adjust. luger is expensive, but the last time i was there i paid $55 for my share in a large amount of outstanding beef, creamed spinach, hash browns, whiskey (they have surprisingly reasonable drink rates), etc etc. i consider that to be pretty good value. for comparison, my parents spent almost double that per person at smith & wollensky's last time they were in chicago. perhaps try luger at lunch, if your schedule permits.
as for hot dogs in the city, i prefer dash dogs on rivington. gray's are nice and cheap but nothing out of the ordinary.

lauren, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

hmm, pizza. definitely go to di fara but go for weekday lunch as dan says unless you enjoy 2 to 3 hour waits (no exaggeration), and the original patsy's in east harlem is much better than dan implies. a plain pie from there is pretty much thin crust perfection.

lauren, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

my schedule will revolve around record shopping, hangover killing, and show going. and i want to hit criff dogs.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

and yes, lucien is good. dan has had the steak there before, in fact. they brought him frites by accident instead of the mashed potatoes that he asked, and then let him keep both. he was so happy and carbo-loaded.

lauren, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

oh my god i would kill baby seals for a steak and garlic mashed potatoes right now.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:36 (seventeen years ago) link

di fara's only halfway to coney island. Tontorros is the one on Coney Island. Is that as good as they say?

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't been to steak frites in a long time, so trust lauren

steak for two at luger's is $65

dmr, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

you can have a really good gourmet hot dog at several places including klatch on maiden lane near broadway (ask about the chutneys). but gray's (or papaya king) is probably the best example of the standard nyc hot dog.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:44 (seventeen years ago) link

similarly, the best nyc pizza is at one of the difara/patsy's/totonno's-type places, but the standard nyc slice is not to be found at such places

gabbneb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

whoops, right....i need to be less glancey while reading....

totonnos is real good, but..i think i did dig di fara's more.

bb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I had a slice of lasagna pizza last night OH SO HAPPY. It made me sleepy at the Whiskey Ward, tho.

Laurel, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

i had bogus sausage pizza last night that was so terrible. yet i almost bit my own fingers off eating it.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

my current favorite is the grandma pie from rosa's on 2nd ave & 33rd st. totally random. it's probably the only thing that they do so well, but good god - it's delicious!

is lasagna pizza the kind with pasta on it? that makes no sense to me.

lauren, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Three Roses on 1st had some interesting sweet potato pizza

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:28 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, that place is good. butternut squash lasagne, mmm.

lauren, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:29 (seventeen years ago) link

three roses...damn i keep forgetting that place.

i had little italy pizza for lunch mtg lunch on fri...not as good delivered as just slice from the shop, but still..thats a decent slice.

bb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:34 (seventeen years ago) link

No pasta, Lauren! Just bolognese sauce, ricotta + mozza, and basil. My favorite pizza ever, outside of Time Cafe (RIP) and St Mark's P (also RIP).

Laurel, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

ah, okay. do you know what i'm talking about? it has, like, ziti or rigatoni piled on top with sauce. up there in the grossness stakes with cheeseburger pizza, as far as i'm concerned.

lauren, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:50 (seventeen years ago) link

all i know is that i am going to eat a shit-ton of pizza while i'm there. when i was there in november i think i had pizza about every four hours. i left one bar, got pizza, then hopped in a cab (with more pizza) and went to another bar. i think i'll wear like cargo pants with the pockets lined with tin foil and always have a couple of slices on me at all times.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:51 (seventeen years ago) link

gabbned...Di Faras isn't a patsy's/tontoros type place. All those places are sit down brick oven type places, Di Faras is just a standard pizza place with a standard pizza oven and a few standard dirty tables. Only the ingredients and the way he makes the pizza are special.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

that would make you wiser than most of us

bb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

oh lauren, if you like grandma pie, there's a place near me, just a dumpy pizzeria called Peppinos, but their Grandma slice is unbelievable on a good day, onions carmelized to the point that when you pick up the pizza your fingers are coated with gooey brown sugar goodness.

(also, sorry not to call...call when you get a chance)

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:55 (seventeen years ago) link

i love the grandma pie. thanks for the tip.

re: patsty's, do not go to any location but the original east harlem one and don't go to the sit-down part. just get a slice or pie from the separate take-out area.

lauren, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

i did not know this dan.

i think i need to eat some pizza now.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I've seen pasta on pizza and it grosses me out. Ditto BREADED chicken on pizza. As I believe the estimable M White observed once, why not just dump some rice on it too, and hit all your carb-loading bases?

Laurel, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

WAIT I FORGOT POTATOES

Laurel, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG MASHED POTATO PIZZA.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

seriously, i'm going to do this. garlic mashed potatoes on top of a veeeeerrrry thin layer of tomato sauce covered in cheese and made into a pizza.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I've seen tortellini pizza

And read about one that has FRENCH FRIES on it.

MMMM CARBS.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:41 (seventeen years ago) link

TORTELLINI PIZZA IS EFFIN AWES, FULES

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

actually, above-mentioned three roses (or is it 5?) makes a decent potato slice

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I've had good potato slices, but they're usually super classy simple pies, really thin crust, thin potato, pretty light. There's a bizarre fancy italian place near me that's in the back of a warehouse on an industrial road called S'apporo D'Ischia and their potato pie actually tasted healthy, if a bit lacking in strong flavors.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

actually Sapori di'Ischia

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago) link

wait wait wait..... i think i need a FRENCH FRY PIZZA made with BBQ SAUCE.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:03 (seventeen years ago) link

there is a place in providence that has NACHO PIZZA. with TORTILLA CHIPS onnit.

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I recently found out what I thought was a BBQ chicken slice at that place on Bedford is actually a BBQ tinned salmon slice. :(

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:08 (seventeen years ago) link

so much evil in the world.

lauren, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I've had like 20 of those slices before I discovered the terror

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:10 (seventeen years ago) link

: (

DO NOT WANT TINNED SALMON PIZZA.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I think mashed potato pizza is usually white, not red. They've got it at my favorite pizza place (not in NY) but I have yet to take the plunge.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:30 (seventeen years ago) link

http://www.intriguing.com/mp/_pictures/life/vii-fing.jpg

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

that would make more sense gabbneb. i think instead of cheese i'll use gravy and instead of a pizza crust i'll use a plate and eat it that way.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 21:32 (seventeen years ago) link

[i]I don't really think there is such a thing as a budget steakhouse in nyc. [/1]

the strip house on 13th in the village? I'm not big on steak but it's prob cheaper than peter luger. a friend of mine was just telling me abt an argentinian place w/good beef in the theatre district, I think w.46th st.

recently in herald square I looked around for my favorite back-in-the-day hot dog joint on the corner of 32nd & Bway: kosher franks and supersweet orange and grape soda from the fountain. long gone.
