though 10 bands that i voted for have appeared with different songs. hmmm

Saw already on the nomination list that it was the wrong track from "In The Court Of The Crimson King". I might have voted for the awesome title track, and also love "Epitaph" and "Moonchild". All three wonderful examples of early symphonic rock at its very best. Never understood the deal about "21th Centry Schizoid Man" though.

Four to show so far from my hundred:
11: Across 110th Street14: You Keep Me Hangin' On16: Go Your Own Wayunranked: Paint It Black

I know I voted for "I'm Not In Love" and also believe I voted for "Surf's Up". Nothing else from my 100 though.
― You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 29 November 2010 23:26 (thirteen years ago) link
Oh, and "Wuthering Height" may have been in my ballot, although I believe it was cut when only the 100 were left.
― You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 29 November 2010 23:27 (thirteen years ago) link
this is the 90's version of "I'm Not In Love" that I like(also I agree with geir about not understanding the deal with 21SCM - why did you not mention "I talk to the Wind"?)
― more like "Age of Nadz" (CaptainLorax), Monday, 29 November 2010 23:32 (thirteen years ago) link
I voted for all these songs:
122. STAN GETZ & ASTRUD GILBERTO "The Girl From Ipanema" (1964) [1,160 points, 11 votes]118. LINK WRAY & HIS RAY MEN "Rumble" (1958) [1,170 points, 12 votes]112. N.W.A "Straight Outta Compton" (1988) [1,195 points, 11 votes]109. KATE BUSH "Wuthering Heights" (1978) [1,197 points, 13 votes]108. NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE "Cortez the Killer" (1975) [1,198 points, 11 votes]104. RON GRAINER & DELIA DERBYSHIRE "Theme From 'Dr. Who'" (1963) [1,219 points, 12 votes]99. (TIE) KING CRIMSON "21st Century Schizoid Man" (1969) [1,223 points, 12 votes]99. (TIE) MOTT THE HOOPLE "All the Young Dudes" (1972) [1,223 points, 12 votes]
The fact that these all placed so low worries me that the higher up the ballot goes the less my own tastes will be represented...
Also, fuck y'all Cortez the Killer haterz. That song is epic and great, who cares if the lyrics are a little historically inaccurate - its true for the most part that the indigenous population were not accustomed to the kind of total war Cortez waged on them and yes, part of the song is obviously being sung by Cortez. If you're going to accuse Neil Young of crypto-racism I'm gonna have to resort to SBs...

I've only had three votes appear so far but I can get into almost everything that's placed, apart from Springsteen and Mott the Hoople (there are 50 Beatles songs that are better than "All the Young Dudes").
― seandalai, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 01:17 (thirteen years ago) link
i too can get into everything that's placed except for mott the hoople and bobby womack, who i honestly don't know much about. also, i'm predisposed to find the anthemic side of bruce springsteen a bit irksome, though i love a lot of his stuff.

I didn't know enough people were into them to vote for them besides Geir! Maybe the same people voted "Year of the Cat" into the top 100s.
― Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link
oh man Year of the Cat is a great song!

It's this kind of nonsense that makes me wish I'd created a weighted ballot with Mott the Hoople at the top of the list.
However Bowie meant the song, the Mott version is a call to arms for freaks and weirdos. I find it completely inspiring.
― Kent Burt, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 01:51 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah, "year of the cat" came way closer to making my cut than "i'm not in love"

Great list so far imo. I don't dislike any of these trax & outright love about 75%. I honestly have no idea what chance most of the other songs I voted for have of placing.
I voted for:------------------------125. JOHNNY CASH "Folsom Prison Blues" (1955) [1,153 points, 13 votes] - My ballot: unranked123. MOTÖRHEAD "Ace of Spades" (1980) [1,159 points, 13 votes] - My ballot: unranked112. N.W.A "Straight Outta Compton" (1988) [1,195 points, 11 votes] - My ballot: #22110. STEREOLAB "Jenny Ondioline" (1993) [1,197 points, 11 votes] - My ballot: #3299. (TIE) THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (1968) [1,223 points, 12 votes] - My ballot: #17
Ten other tracks were by artists I voted for elsewhere.
I was not familiar w but really dig:-----------------------------------122. STAN GETZ & ASTRUD GILBERTO "The Girl From Ipanema" (1964) [1,160 points, 11 votes]119. 10CC "I'm Not in Love" (1975) [1,167 points, 12 votes]113. MILES DAVIS "Shhh/Peaceful" (1969) [1,186 points, 11 votes]107. BOBBY WOMACK "Across 110th Street" (1972) [1,203 points, 11 votes]

120. HENRY MANCINI & JOHNNY MERCER "Moon River" (1961) [1,165 points, 9 votes]118. LINK WRAY & HIS RAY MEN "Rumble" (1958) [1,170 points, 12 votes]117. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "Born to Run" (1975) [1,175 points, 10 votes]102. TALKING HEADS "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" (1983) [1,221 points, 10 votes]
I can hardly believe I neglected to throw some points at "Folsom Prison Blues". I did vote for a few of the artists that have made it so far, but not these songs in particular.

that 3 minute short version of Jenny Ondioline does sound kind of unimpressive when compared to the much longer LP version― peter in montreal, Monday, November 29, 2010 10:52 AM (10 hours ago) Bookmark

this is otm. I've always considered the full-length version to be a worthy sequel to "Hallogallo" by Neu!, but to get the full hypnotic effect, you've got to commit to the 18 minutes. The extended length of the droney parts really increases the payback of the melodic sections.

This is a fine selection methinks. Could have happily allocated points to virtually all of these in different circumstances. I seem to recall that I actually did vote for Ipanema, Ondioline, Cortez, Dr Who and Naive Melody.

Turns out that "I'm not in love" is a great headphones track - YouTube over laptop speakers doesn't do it justice.
― seandalai, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 13:15 (thirteen years ago) link
i've always found 'i'm not in love' adds poignancy when it pops up in a movie scene or something, but it seems to come up a bit short when it has to make up all the yards itself. that corny, corny clip doesn't help much.
