Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 29 November 2010 16:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Agree CtK isn't racist, more a case of "I don't know anything about the Aztecs but I'll write a song about them anyway".

seandalai, Monday, 29 November 2010 16:11 (thirteen years ago) link

it's racist in a good way, cause he thinks they were a lot nicer than they actually were

iatee, Monday, 29 November 2010 16:15 (thirteen years ago) link

can't remember if I voted for that kraftwerk track but it's a good one. Then again they almost all are.

skip, Monday, 29 November 2010 16:17 (thirteen years ago) link

That was the Kraftwerk one I went for. Good list!

Gukbe, Monday, 29 November 2010 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Again, I only used that term about his Jamaican(?) accent in that clip (does he only do that on the Live Rust version? I can't remember) Have no idea how to unpack the itself song. xps

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Monday, 29 November 2010 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the only time I've ever heard Cortez the Killer was Built to Spill's live version. /indie

Gukbe, Monday, 29 November 2010 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Marissa Nadler does a nice cover that I actually prefer over the original.

seandalai, Monday, 29 November 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I dunno, even the accent in that video just seems sorta goofy to me; not sure what to make of it

'The Road'(a hundred less-than signs)'Taken' (bernard snowy), Monday, 29 November 2010 16:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Off my list so far:

122. STAN GETZ & ASTRUD GILBERTO "The Girl From Ipanema" (1964) [1,160 points, 11 votes]
121. PIXIES "Debaser" (1989) [1,161 points, 11 votes]
120. HENRY MANCINI & JOHNNY MERCER "Moon River" (1961) [1,165 points, 9 votes]
113. MILES DAVIS "Shhh/Peaceful" (1969) [1,186 points, 11 votes]
110. STEREOLAB "Jenny Ondioline" (1993) [1,197 points, 11 votes]
106. KRAFTWERK "Computer Love" (1981) [1,209 points, 10 votes]

Mmmm... will we get any classical love further on? Splitting the poll into 1900-1950 / 1951-1999 would've been interesting.

Moka, Monday, 29 November 2010 16:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Woah - Just listening to Live Rust properly for the first time, that "Jamaican accent" bit is extra bizarre.

seandalai, Monday, 29 November 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link

lol, I didn't vote

Joe Wasp (DJP), Monday, 29 November 2010 16:54 (thirteen years ago) link

^ despite my numerous pleas for you to!

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 29 November 2010 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link

My Kraftwerk pick was fairly abitrary as it was very difficult to choose. I figured they'd have at least one entry, and to be honest I'd be surprised if 'Computer Love' was the only one that gets in.

Getz/Gilberto still my only vote so far, but I'm liking the look of the list. Nothing before 1950 yet, though.

emil.y, Monday, 29 November 2010 17:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Phew, glad it's not just me then. That version was the first one I heard, and here was this white guy singing about the wrongs of Spanish imperialism in Mexico in a comedy West Indian accent and I just had no idea what to make of that AT ALL.

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

*wishes he'd done this on that other thread now instead of spoiling Johnny's poll*

Krampus Interruptus (NickB), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Naw, it's cool. The more actual discussion there is, the less of a chance the youtube embeds have to cluster up and freeze people's browsers.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

What do people think of how canon the poll is so far? It doesn't even seem like an ilx specific part of the canon and yet... it seems very appropriate. Some things are recognised for a reason etc.

wheezy f baby (a hoy hoy), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:12 (thirteen years ago) link

none of my songs appeared yet but I generally dig this list. Wish I helped Coltrane, Cash, Paint It Black and even Computer Love.

good to see N.W.A., Bobby Womack and especially Rumble place.

Only song I didn't know is the Stereolab one. Doesn't sound bad at all.

Seems like we can expect some mad Prince/Beach Boys/Neil Young?/Kraftwerk action in the top 100 (this is the end for the Pixies I hope)

Ace of Spades, The Girl From Ipanema and I'm Not in Love make for great variety. But I wouldn't mind if this was the last we saw from those genres.

gospodin simmel, Monday, 29 November 2010 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I bumped the 2 jazz songs into the top 125. Lazy-ass ballot redeemed.

a nan, a bal, an anal ― (abanana), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, that faux-Jamaican bit does sound weird and uncomfortable now, but I'm guessing he was influenced by Uk punk's reggae dalliance and did it innocently at the time. I heart Neil, but the lyrics on CtK are some of his most awkward: "they lifted many stones", lol. Like when you're a kid and you have to write a poem for English class and you force the rhyme!

Also very happy Bobby Womack's in there.

tubby permacrocked whorefucker (Lostandfound), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha, I think I read that Neil actually did write 'Cortez' as a poem for his class at school! The lyric would only really make sense to me if Cortez himself were the narrator for the whole thing - despite the splendour of the 'I know she's living there' verse, I don't think he is. I know Cortez grieved as he destroyed Tenochtitlán, but I wouldn't be confident that Neil did.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 29 November 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Enjoy your parkour, Johnny. btw what is the indie-ish song that lifts the melody from 'Computer Love'?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 29 November 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

coldplay "talk"

mormon's marmots (crüt), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha, that's interesting, IK. Yeah I get very confused by the narrative in many of Neil's songs. "Powderfinger" is another one. Having said that, I've always found "he came dancing across the water" (when not sung in a fake Caribbean accent!) extremely chilling.

tubby permacrocked whorefucker (Lostandfound), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:58 (thirteen years ago) link

3 of mine so far... Prince, Miles, and of course Stereolab's best song Jenny Ondioline. Fuck off Tuomas, you clothed-ear Geir imitator. That song is better than any single thing on your ballot as far as I'm concerned.

sleeve, Monday, 29 November 2010 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I get the feeling based on what I've heard that I'd get quite a lot out of Stereolab...

underrated aeroflot disasters i have wikisearched (acoleuthic), Monday, 29 November 2010 18:11 (thirteen years ago) link

@acoleuthic: My two favourite Stereolab tracks by far are Animal or Vegetable and Metronomic Underground. (Spotify links because the first one is too long for YouTube, and I assume you have Spotify). I'd have voted for either if they'd been nominated.

seandalai, Monday, 29 November 2010 18:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I listened to Metronomic Underground earlier!! Found it to be a giant trippy massing pulsing thing with a cool hip-hop break. Will give some other stuff a listen. Like how there's usually at least one epic amidst each of their albums.

underrated aeroflot disasters i have wikisearched (acoleuthic), Monday, 29 November 2010 18:48 (thirteen years ago) link

seandalai otm re: the two best things stereolab ever did. a shame neither of those tracks was nominated.

phish in your sleazebag (contenderizer), Monday, 29 November 2010 19:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Hmmm... I am afraid, to a lot of us, with all those Youtube vids, this thread may be dangerously heavily packed for a lot of us Vista users........

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 29 November 2010 20:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Listening to "Metronomic Underground", and it's much better than the Stereolab song upthread. It's still not my favourite thing in the world (never understood bands who want to use "real" instruments to do what sounds essentially like imitation of electronic music), but at least this tune has a nice groove.

Tuomas, Monday, 29 November 2010 20:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Geir, maybe use bookmarks and just go to where you left off reading the last time?

Tuomas, Monday, 29 November 2010 20:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i actually *didn't* vote for 'cortez' specifically because of that accent on the live version. it's the little things when you're trying to cut down to 100 songs.

looking forward to 105 more opportunities for tuomas to outgeir geir

mookieproof, Monday, 29 November 2010 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow, I like everything in the list so far, good work everyone. Five from my ballot in already:

119. 10CC "I'm Not in Love" (1975) [1,167 points, 12 votes]
116. PRINCE "Controversy" (1981) [1,176 points, 9 votes]
115. THE BEACH BOYS "Surf's Up" (1971) [1,184 points, 10 votes]
111. JOHN COLTRANE "My Favorite Things" (1961) [1,195 points, 12 votes]
106. KRAFTWERK "Computer Love" (1981) [1,209 points, 10 votes]

Saddened by the anti-'I'm Not In Love' sentiments upthread, one of the greatest songs ever in terms of bringing studio experimentalism into pop. As dreamy as any shoegaze/drone song too.

105. THE SUPREMES "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (1966) [1,216 points, 13 votes]

Yeah, finally using bookmarks completely revolutionized my ILX experience!

they link you to awkward YT pages with the video taking up the whole browser window instead of the usual YouTube pages for videos, though, which kinda blows imo

Yes, the third of mine to show - wonderful tune, even if I prefer the Vanilla Fudge version

Yeah. I didn't vote for the Supremes but happy to have them here.

emil.y, Monday, 29 November 2010 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Shit!!!

I should have voted for this. It would've probably push it in the top 100

"In 1966 I was appalled when a writer claimed "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was a better record than "Like A Rolling Stone," but it might be true."

Greil Marcus 100% otm

the shitty covers do ruin the song's reputation though.
