I still think this game would be better with more realistic penalties for crashing and running other cars off the road. I play it like NASCAR or some shit and it's almost always effective if I cause enough havok.

apparently the damadge system unlocks as you level up... some kind of crazy design decision.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 25 November 2010 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link

huh. yeah that is pretty weird. i would really be OK with a substantial wreck just ending a race. in the harder races, you can't recover from rubbing against a wall or spinning out one time anyway.

at least give us a cool animation of the car wrecking, and make us have to pay for repairs. if this game is like others, money gets plentiful 75% through it.

ha

I am still hooked, but I agree with most of the negative criticism I've read. I wish they would have just put less "premium" cars in the game instead of having 3/4 of the cars look like they were ported directly from the PS2 generation titles. The lack of customization options for the "standard" cars is lame. Some of the tracks look pretty bad. I don't understand why they put so much work into modeling tracks, then paint the grass bright ass florescent green. Mute that shit a little. Make it look like a Ridley Scott movie or something. 50% of the appeal of these games for me is just driving fast through cool surroundings. I also despise the menu system. Even with the 10GB disc install, the loading becomes unbearable after a while. You screw up and go into the wrong menu, or hit the back button, and you have to sit there and wait for an eternity. I don't understand why it took them 5 years to make this game. I guess they spent all that time coding the useless online features that I will never use.

still probably gonna get this - haven't played GT since version 2 came out in what, 2000?

online is also a bit undercooked actually (no credits earned, no leaderboards, ranks, records, no punishments for racing like an ass, etc). but you should at least try it out - kart racing against a full lobby is super fun.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:52 (thirteen years ago) link

the feature list in the 2nd post itt is *drool* but i can't imagine a GT was made w/o a bunch of infuriatingly stupid design decisions. the damage system is... unlocked? the fuck?

but i shd probably butt out since i don't have a ps3 and probably never will lol

first as tragedy, then as favre (goole), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, the car damage stuff is really wtf. I have been playing for probably 15 hours and am still not high enough level to see any significant damage.

no punishments for racing like an ass

this is actually a huge gripe about the single player mode for me, too. I wanted damage because I wanted a race to basically be over once I smashed my car badly enough. Instead, I can just use the other cars to cut corners and circumvent the whole apex turning they spend so much time teaching you in the license tests.

All that said, I am still having a great time playing it. I haven't played since GT3, so I really missed the feel of these games. I haven't enjoyed any other realistic racing game like I have enjoyed the GT games. They always just feel off to me somehow. Despite all of the complaints I've listened, I am asking for the Driving Force steering wheel for x-mas, despite how 40 Year Old Virgin it'll make me look.

I have about a billion problems with this game already but one that I don't think has been mentioned here is the 3D settings. It offers parallax and convergence, gives you a vague description of what they do and provides no on-screen queues. At all. You have to GUESS a setting, go all the way out of the settings menu and wait for the opening sequence to load. EVERY TIME.

All right, let's say you have to fill out a form specifying how far up your arse the doctor sticks his finger. You get to choose a number between 0 and 10 and you have no concept of what the numbers mean, so you arbitrarily pick 7 and submit the form. Two minutes later a doctor's got his fist so far up your bum that he's picking your nose.

dude come on, it's a huge, crazy game, it's gonna have some loading screens. i think developers have become so adept at hiding the loading progress in-game that when a game reverts to type (remember the loading screens on the original tomb raider, or GT1?) it's like break out the pitchforks. but you know, it'll get there. you're at home on a comfy chair. no rush.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 00:39 (thirteen years ago) link

xp That may be so but the menu convention and horrible 3D calibration system make this game a real chore to use in 2010.

I'll play it properly soon (haven't touched it since last week) and am prepared to eat my words.

unintentional boob pic (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 01:02 (thirteen years ago) link

The loading for a race isn't so bad (30 sec. or so, pretty standard for racing games), but it's the poorly designed UI/menu system that gets to be a drag as you have to go through a variety of menus to do anything and each of those menus takes 10-20 seconds (or more to load)... it adds up to a lot more time spent in menus than there needs to be. Sometimes I feel like I'm in the menu system more than in races - I'd love to see the stats. The menu system is weirdly poorly designed & just because it has always been poor in GT isn't an excuse. I keep a sketch book by my side when playing and have filled pages with doodles and whiney complaints.

For me, the variety of content is the best thing about the game, but sometimes it's a weakness as certain areas seem to lack focus (rally in particular feels like shit to me). Online is undercooked and a mess... and that you don't get credits or experiences for online races is absurd (they claim it will be patched in at some point, I guess). Also the cars I'd most like to drive are too fucking expensive - I mean 14,000,000 credits expensive - THE GRIND.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 03:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, no excuse for poor UI design these days. Good conventions are so widespread and so absolute that reinventing the wheel is mental whichever way you look at it. I don't know what got into these people. Pseudo-mouse-pointer to select buttons? Back + acknowledge to go back? The stupidest settings menu structure I have ever seen? etc etc.

unintentional boob pic (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't get me wrong, at times I really do like the game (in particular I've mostly had a blast racing karts online), but at other times it has really aggravated me. My main gripes are the absolutely shockingly shit AI (which is why I most want credits for racing online) and the 80% standard cars (not just because of how crap they look, but mainly because I like to race in cockpit view, which they don't have), and the used car dealership for the standard cars that only stocks a small random batch at a time that is never the cars I need to do certain events.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 03:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah, I thought maybe I just didn't know the correct button to engage cockpit view. Can't believe they locked that down.

as someone who fits that description i looove the fact that my old favorite tracks from GT1 are still in there, i.e. Deep Forest

the whole claiming-your-prize-car thing is weird.. you have to "click" on Car Delivery, then choose the car, then say "Yes" when it asks if you want to "use" it, then it... dramatically appears out of the darkness and THEN it's finally in your garage. and then you have to go back and select the car you were previously driving if you want to continue driving that one.

a few more thoughts (as I near 1,000 miles)...

I don't who thought it was a good idea to put development resources into the b-Spec mode - what a waste. I put it on when I'm cooking dinner or something to earn a few credits, but it just seems so... why? Who finds it fun to (basically) watch a game play itself?

I don't understand why these games don't scale your opponents in the races. It seems like either my car isn't good enough to compete (even though it qualifies for the race) or it is overpowered and the racing feels more like a drive in the country on a Sunday afternoon & almost as completely free of challenge as b-Spec mode. It's really hard to find the sweet spot, especially as you only have the funds to buy so many different cars. This could easily be fixed if the game just loaded up cars that performed similar to whatever car you picked.

The driving model in this game, with all assists off, is REALLY good, comparable to the best PC sims, so I don't mind so much that it seems more like a driving game than a racing game most of the time. It's fun to drive.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 9 December 2010 03:57 (thirteen years ago) link

when you say "assists" what do you mean? would that include automatic shifting?

i hear what you're saying re difficulty scaling - i'm either blowing away the field or my car just isn't good enough. but if memory of GT1 serves, eventually the races will get harder and i'll be playing clubman special stage for the 10th time in a row just to eke out the win i need to get [x] car that i can then sell to buy the semi-racing suspension etc

have won most of the beginner races but can't find any classic cars in the dealerships to buy..

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 10:20 (thirteen years ago) link

putting all this resource management crap into driving games is a huge pain in the ass. ok, fine, if you want to lock some cars until i've progressed a certain amount, go ahead. don't make me have to earn money and visit dealerships and all that wahoosie when all i want to do is DRIVE.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:01 (thirteen years ago) link

ledge - if you just want to drive you can always back out to the main menu and just do arcade races (nice selection of cars you can use in there too). no credits or $ for those races though :(

when you say "assists" what do you mean? would that include automatic shifting?

For me, yeah, I've usually got everything off in driving options, no driving line, no traction control, no ASM or ABS, manual trans and this gives you a lot more control and a better overall feeling (but I play with a wheel, so that makes it easier). I've also gotten used to it in other sims like iRacing (that have no assists), so to play with 'em really messes with my head. It's sort of a drag that when you switch cars or events it keeps turning some of those assists back on so you have to remember to keep going back to the driving options before a race and turn 'em off. I've had a few races where I forget the assists got reset and left the default on TC:5 ABS:1 and it felt like driving on rails to me - can't imagine how pointless it would feel with the even higher level of assists available.

At the least, even if you're using a joypad controller, you should learn to use manual transmission as that will give you a lot more control and speed through corners & you will feel a lot more engaged in the driving.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:41 (thirteen years ago) link

hmmm... will consider. i didn't even know those options existed tbh (apart from manual trans of course).

for a beefy challenge it can be pretty fun to buy an overpowered FR car and do NO mods to it at all.. can be pretty tough to win without sliding all over the track.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't want to lecture from the mountain tops, but if you're only going to turn off one assist, PLEASE turn off the racing line... you will find the driving much more fun the less crutches you use, but that one is the worst & totally ruins immersion in racing games, imo. Even with all the assists off, the fact that you can't turn off the HUD is also still a HUGE assist as you don't have to really learn the tracks or even braking points as there is no way to stop the game from telling you when to brake or downshift with a giant red flashing number. Also always having the map on screen should more than make up for no driving line even if you don't take any time to learn the track.

I'm ~33% done with RR3, it's been pretty great so far, though starting to get slightly repetitive and the next class seems to warrant a huge jump in game$ that I'm not sure corresponds with the prize $ but I could be wrong.
