like, i dunno guys, i think he mayyyy have been trolling!! is robert spirelli a dude who would even be posting in this thread if the first album wasnt a pfork bnm

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:16 (thirteen years ago) link

because I like you as a person I want to try to explain to you why your whole stance here is platinum-level assholism but I know from experience you're incapable of understanding that :(

yeah but you realize "we dont want you listening to rap" sounds like an awful statement regardless right

like just think of it this way: on my worst day on a politics thread, I'm exactly as bad as you are about this kinda shit

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:28 (thirteen years ago) link

thus the word "regardless"

questeon the answers (call all destroyer), Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean i just wrote an extended essay basically on why curren$y is dope & you should check his mixtapes & dudes just posting sarcastically about taking rap seriously ... but im the asshole for telling him to fuck off?

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:30 (thirteen years ago) link

yes.

aerosmith: the acid house years (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:31 (thirteen years ago) link

the essay part was great don't get me wrong but the snide shit is just so tragic

hey yall, i am in the burn ward, reading rap reviews on pfork. please come by and say hi. smuggle in some kfc.

deej, i am not trolling, i 100% sincerely think you are frequently an unbearable asshole when you post about rap and "anyone engaging with rap seriously should know 'the mixtapes'" is just such a beautiful illustration of that it is almost self-parody.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:33 (thirteen years ago) link

no, its the truth, because otherwise youre stuck with the 7 major label rap records released this year. i dont give a shit if u think im an asshole for thinking there are more than 7 good rap records & that thinking u should actually listen to what the genre is producing is, like, a basic part of caring about rap

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:36 (thirteen years ago) link

But deej has a point, too, one I more or less agree with.

altered boners (rennavate), Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:38 (thirteen years ago) link

i agree with deej but his response just smacks of the type of exclusionary garbage that i despise on every level

questeon the answers (call all destroyer), Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:41 (thirteen years ago) link

hey guys, i was responding to trolling! read spiralli's post again. i dont post that shit if, like, dan perry shows up & asks why we like flockaveli, or if aerosmith asks about curren$y. i do post it when a dude is being a dbag

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 01:43 (thirteen years ago) link

lol do u guys think deej heard [CONTROVERSIAL MODERATOR EDIT please don't do that ilxor] before aerosmith y/n

Mixtapes and albums are the same exact thing. They're both folders of mp3s that you get on google

"anyone engaging with rap seriously should know 'the mixtapes'" is just such a beautiful illustration of that it is almost self-parody.

― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, November 24, 2010

no it really isn't - i'm only just realizing that ppl here are "waiting for the album". u shouldn't do that anymore - the game has changed and you really have to consider mixtapes with original beats as as worth checking out as anything else.

zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:07 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't mean that with regard to "taking rap seriously" - just as a casual listener u shld regard the two types of release as having equal potential reward

zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link

i know deej is insufferable itt and kvlty elsewhere, but tbf he was bemused that pilot talk was a big deal when "dude went from nu-nas to 'i think wiz is better' over the course of one album :-/" and backed that up with utubes for u guys of what he thought currensy was capable of. pilot talk didn't interest me but what i've heard from pilot talk 2 is back to that niceness.

zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I would have thought that mixtapes have been pretty well absorbed into the casual observer's notion of current rap in 2010. To use the strawman example pitchfork has been writing about mixtapes for ages.

I think these days we're often just a little too quick to be proud of not getting our heads around the logic of how particulars operate as genres (including how they generate product) on the grounds of being anti elitism and gatekeeperism. Those things exist, sure, but in an environment where there is no substantial barrier to getting with the genre on its own terms (because the mixtapes are as practically accessible as the albums) the charge of elitism in that context is pretty hollowed out.

Tim F, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:25 (thirteen years ago) link

wtf is 'kvlty'

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:30 (thirteen years ago) link

lol @ the idea that i would even assume that would be something i could google!

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:34 (thirteen years ago) link

deej, with that charge i was thinking in particular of your insistence that ppl acquire and process - or, preferably, already own - the 213 hours of music that constitutes quik's career rather than download a 1:30 hr tape judiciously sampling it. for me it's a more natural impulse to turn ppl onto stuff rather than imagine myself king of a rare & secret(e) fiefdom so i favor the more accessible option.

zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:37 (thirteen years ago) link

i still kinda think everyone would be better off w/ the 213 hours of quik's career tbh

wheres rev at to back me up on this

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:41 (thirteen years ago) link

ur basically sating "fuck off newjack" tho, which rev would never say. rev would, and did, say "start with rythym-al-ism".

zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:45 (thirteen years ago) link

im sure ive said that!

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:52 (thirteen years ago) link

i just have trouble deciding what one is best to start w/ so i end up throwing up my hands & saying 'everything'

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:53 (thirteen years ago) link

well that's fair enough, obv.

zvookster, Thursday, 25 November 2010 02:57 (thirteen years ago) link

i give deej shit all the time but a tossed off comment of "we don't want you to listen to rap" is a pretty acceptable & i don't think serious response to spiralli -- who never posts in rap threads -- coming in to say that he has "sb deej" at the top of his to do list -- i mean an asshole comment to match an asshole comment -- why is everyone jumping down deej's throat

J0rdan S., Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:15 (thirteen years ago) link

because there were a million better ways to tell spiralli to fuck off than

"we don't want you to listen to rap"

which i just hate hate hate on a really visceral level

questeon the answers (call all destroyer), Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean it's really, really not a big deal--i know deej's name is permanently surrounded by drudgesirens these days--but we should all just stop talking about this tbh. it's the night before thanksgiving and i'm drinking alone, i just want everyone to love each other.

questeon the answers (call all destroyer), Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:19 (thirteen years ago) link

except ilxor who was the actual dick itt

i 100% sincerely think you are frequently an unbearable asshole when you post about rap and "anyone engaging with rap seriously should know 'the mixtapes'" is just such a beautiful illustration of that it is almost self-parody.

― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, November 24, 2010 7:33 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark

these two things are separate -- deej CAN be an unbearable asshole when he posts about rap but he's not always, and after his "i told you so" nonsense itt he posted a long post about why he digs pilot talk 2 -- legit jumping point for discussion & the kinda post that we want/need

i know that not everyone can sit around all day listening to mixtapes like most of the goons, but, like, mixtapes play a much bigger role when it comes to modern rap than albums. it's not even close. there is no gate keeping being done here where you have to show off your currensy or waka mixtapes punch card, but those of us that do listen to those tapes are gonna come in these threads & talk about those tapes, cuz it's always gonna be relevant. this is underground cliquey crap. rap in 2010 = mixtapes, songs only on youtube, songs only on hulkshare etc. it's not an asshole thing.

& deej is right about how he approached dan in the waka thread & john in this thread -- he's more of a dick to goons that aren't paying attention

J0rdan S., Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:21 (thirteen years ago) link

deej's comment was totally innocuous & just shit being shot back at shit -- deej is rhapsodic about the rap that he loves

J0rdan S., Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:22 (thirteen years ago) link

lol

this is NOT underground cliquey crap

anyway. back on topic. J0rdan OTM, deej is not rly outta line in this thread at all, i havent heard any of the mixtapes but deej's energy is kinda infectious & makes me want to hear em. love pilot talk 1 & waiting on 2 to arrive.

also: feeling rly left out b/c apparently rap in 2010 = mixtapes, blogs, youtube and here i am just buying CDs as usual ;_;

beat on 'fashionably late' is classic like reasonable doubt ski shit

challop and a muff (deej), Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i personally am kind of an albums guy and am not that big on picking through individual songs on blogs, youtube, etc. but mixtapes really are basically albums now and it's basically as easy to follow which big/good mixtapes are out as w/ official albums now, the whole thing is that it's not this dense inaccessible hardcore fan only scene it used to be.

the pussy re-upholstery gang (some dude), Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:45 (thirteen years ago) link

sorry for overusing "basically"

the pussy re-upholstery gang (some dude), Thursday, 25 November 2010 03:46 (thirteen years ago) link

"The mixtapes were better" is also pretty much a truism now, right?

Like, would it even make sense to consider the careers - even the commercial success - of Lil' Wayne, Gucci Mane, Nikki Minaj (to name three examples that to me seem particularly prominent) based just on their official studio albums?

beat on 'fashionably late' is classic like reasonable doubt ski shit

Okay need to hear this now.

no, of course not -- it would be like judging a piece of art only by the frame

i love tha carter ii & iii and the state vs. radric davis, haven't heard more than a handful of tracks from dedication 2 or da drought 3 or burrprint 3d, which i'll check out on youtube if i am pointed in that direction but otherwise don't really seek out. too much music out there for me to NEED to hear every "good" mixtape track that wayne's ever done; i'm satisfied with a couple statements that he feels justified putting out to the wider public.

sad? maybe, but it works alright for me
