No way in hell I'd do it in person, but I'm hoping to strike a few online deals Friday between naps.

I eat as many beans as I can possibly hold down at 5 a.m. for breakfast and then go to the most crowded store I can find a couple hours later, just stand there in the middle of the action fartin like mad

longstanding tradition in my family about which I'm a little embarrassed but hey traditions are important

hahahahahahaha

I don't think you could pay me to go shopping on that day but I pretty much hate shopping anyway so this is kind of my worst nightmare.

what really annoys me, I mean beyond the obvious, is that black friday deals generally are okay but not particularly amazing! if everything in america were half price that'd be one thing, but instead people are getting trampled to death for 10% discounts

iatee, Wednesday, 24 November 2010 03:51 (thirteen years ago) link

if you do get trampled to death you save an almost incalculable amount of money in the long run

I remember two years ago, waking up and discovering that my mom had bought a "napster mp3 player" at best buy 2 hours before

Has some great lines but it's not my favourite track on Katy Lied.

Waking up at 4am Friday so I can get to work at 6am.

At least I don't have to work midnight to noon, I guess.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 24 November 2010 04:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Worked Wal-Mart one year and it sucked getting there at 4am and having this huge line of fat fucking idiots waiting to get in and buy discounted shit. It was more or less pre-internet and I was cashier and basically i didnt have a break in my line the entire morning. Think I made holiday money but not 100% sure. Never doing this myself. Don't really care for Xmas, tbh. I love seeing friends & fam but everything else, please take it.

And if he came back, Jesus would declare a War on Christmas!

i know people who really enjoy this stuff, like they make all kinds of plans with mapped out strategies and are way to into it. there is no way i would be anywhere near a dept store on this day.

i cant even bother to shop online never mind get to a store. Besides as any good man can attest, we do all our holiday shopping a day or two before christmas anyways.

I kind of want to go to the outlets this year. This is the first time in a long time that we could actually AFFORD to be really stupid re: spending money on Christmas gifts and I feel like I should seize the opportunity.

IT'S A TRAP

Unfrozen Caveman Board-Lawyer (WmC), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 16:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I like the transparent ugliness of it, how it resists any kind of romanticizing, unlike something like Halloween or bullfighting. (or more appropriately, Thanksgiving)
I would like to believe that this transparency will make it self-regulating over time.

Black Friday is like catnip for working people who crave the "good things" of a consumer society but who make less than $15/hr. This is a very large segment of the population. BF is now another big holiday, iow.

ha - I think the lesson of the 21st century is "given enough battering, people will romanticize even the most reprehensible garbage in the world"

I basically hate everything about this whole idea.

The "first 200 customers throught the door" promotions make for a combination of the Lottery and MMA brawling == premier 21st century entertainment value.

Some of my co-workers are mad crazy for this shizznit. You could not make me get up that early to save money. World is a better place that early in the morning without me in it. And fuck being in a crowded store. Online thing is cool, would do that but I always forget to check it out...and I don't have the patience to go digging for bargains.

That is the stench of tyranny (VegemiteGrrrl), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 20:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I went to K-Mart with my mother one year and didn't last five minutes before I begged to go home. What's so different about Black Friday than any other holiday sale? They all have gimmicky catches such as "Buy 5 game titles on Black Friday to get 50% an X-Box 360 with a free year subscription to Netflix Streaming!". People climb over each other for this crap, it's unbelievable.

That's not a "laugh track", it's an audience and you're in it. (MintIce), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 21:15 (thirteen years ago) link

This is one of those things that makes me ashamed to be American.

Maybe u were never really proud to be American if something like this makes u ashamed so easily. #reallymakesyouthink
