and slightly less about vampires.

yeah "Vampire Money" isn't really about vampires, it's making fun of the bands on the Twilight soundtracks. love this album!

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

mcr only takes big blue dong money i guess (for their dylan cover in that hollywood abortion of watchmen)

devendra banfart (jk), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link

well yeah it's a silly beef to have, but i enjoyed gerard's justification in an interview about how he's basically a snob about how vampires are portrayed and thinks they should be gross and scary and not young and sexy

some dude, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

only a few songs in but I may have a new favorite album of 2010

love the music video, even if I don't get any of the references at all

"gravity don't mean too much to me" is such a great lyric

i have decided to take the outfits in that video as my new style concept. all that yellow!

yeah "Vampire Money" isn't really about vampires

but see they have a vampire reference on every album, and, you know, i respect that in a band.

Finally listened the whole thing on the drive to Michigan last night, this is pretty goddamned great. I love this band.

I successfully introduced this to my kids as a possible substitute so we don't have to listen to Green Day on the way to kindergarten every day. Now it's, "Can we hear the Na-Na-Na song?" (Just hoping I don't get a note home about him yelling "fuck like a Kennedy!" on the playground.)

also the rockist in me probably thinks the second side > the first side because there aren't any singles, but those last four or five songs hold gorgeous surprises

thats it isn't it.

not many rock albums make you smile and feel as good as this ..

mark e, Thursday, 12 July 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

listened to "vampire money" three times in a row this morning, cranking the volume a little louder each time. my ears are still ringing. great album.

re vampire ..

my fave part is the bass drone at the end (don't get me wrong, the song is a total belter)

the whole album is so crisp and sharp (which for once i really think works .. ), and then at the very end they drop this almighty bass drone at the end as if to say, "yeah, we know .. "

f*ckin' love this album ..

mark e, Thursday, 12 July 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

cranking the volume a little louder each time

post bottle of red wine, this can never be loud enough.

though suspect my kids/neighbours would disagree.

a couple of weeks ago i was in a car with my dad, driving back from the countryside, and put this on and TURNED IT UP and for a little while everything was perfect

Yeah I had a similar experience a month or two ago. Great car music.

am always kinda surprised by the sustained love on this thread since a) i felt a little alone in my enthusiasm for the record at the time, iirc i was one of only a handful of people to vote for it in Pazz & Jop and the only ilxor and b) i haven't really gone back and listened to it as much as other people since then

the show must goon (some dude), Sunday, 16 September 2012 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

You weren't the only ilxor, I'm pretty sure I voted for it too. I still get a kick out of it.

oh ok cool, dunno your irl name so i wouldn't have known

the show must goon (some dude), Sunday, 16 September 2012 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, no reason you would. Just checked, I voted it #7, between Marnie Stern and Killing Joke. Seems about right.

three weeks pass...

I have recently discovered an unexpected love for esp. the last couple of MCR records. That awesome interview upthread made me feel less weird about it.

Simon H., Thursday, 11 October 2012 03:04 (eleven years ago) link

They strike a really great balance btwn sincerity and sneer that reminds me of, well, y'know.

Simon H., Thursday, 11 October 2012 03:08 (eleven years ago) link

no, i don't know!

some dude, Thursday, 11 October 2012 03:08 (eleven years ago) link

Hahah I knew who that would be a photo of.

So MCR is releasing 10 of the songs that were scrapped during the Danger Days sessions over the next couple of weeks. The first two, "Boy Division" and "Tomorrow's Money," came out today and they are nice and snarly!

that's pretty cool to hear! i like most of the songs on this better than the stuff on the proper album, worth checking out for anyone who hasn't heard it:

boy division!

"Boy Division" is good! I'd be happy w/ that as a teaser for a new record.

second pair of outtakes is out -- "AMBULANCE" and "Gun." are both great

The Doc Morbama (some dude), Monday, 26 November 2012 13:56 (eleven years ago) link

on cursory first listen the latter seems to stray into quasi-"political" territory, not sure how I feel about this development

Simon H., Monday, 26 November 2012 14:24 (eleven years ago) link

well they shelved it so it's not really a development at this point haha

I'm just now hearing the DD outtakes on the Mad Gear and Missle Kid EP and they're pretty good!

Tunes on CW vol. 3 are pretty huge.

Simon H., Sunday, 16 December 2012 06:06 (eleven years ago) link

Gerard put a song on soundcloud under the name 'Danny The Street,' pretty good: http://kroq.cbslocal.com/2012/12/07/my-chemical-romances-gerard-way-releases-punk-track-as-danny-the-street/

some dude, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 13:32 (eleven years ago) link

OK on sober listen "The Light Behind Your Eyes" is just too broad/soppy for me. Just a step too far into saccharine. On the other hand "Gun" remains ludicrously catchy, though I imagine they'd be in heaps of trouble had it been a single rather than a c-side.

Simon H., Monday, 24 December 2012 17:20 (eleven years ago) link

i like all of these songs a lot but i'm also glad they scrapped them and did danger days instead

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 24 December 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

honestly i’ve made my peace with “sing.” this is their best album

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 August 2018 15:05 (five years ago) link

I actually like "Sing"! It's "Planetary" that doesn't work for me

but yeah on balance I think you're right
