cap.iv for crazy geiger counter crescendo
― calpolaris (nakhchivan), Monday, 22 November 2010 02:33 (thirteen years ago) link
gantz graf is more widely known because of the video
rightfully so imo... this was released as a dvd!
cap totally bores me tbh. lentic catachresis way more interesting for the random sputtering stuff

for a pretty long time dial was my absolute favorite autechre track. I still kind of think this ep is the best thing autechre have done, a peak between their two best albums (confield and draft 7.30). I do realize I'm possibly the only person who thinks this.

I can't stand the kind of industrial noise that's the MO of "Gantz Graf" (the video does nothing for me, too). "Dial" is tedious too, though that may be because it's twice as long as the title track, but at least it's listenable.
"Cap.IV," then, is kind of a revelation for me on this EP. Weird squirrelly with ghostly vocal samples processed beyond legibility and a muted melody -- this is my idea of a 21st-century Autechre track.

Other than the video, there's little I remember about Gantz Graf other than it was Confield jumped up a few gears. The title track was controversial to fans, even after Confield had been served up. I remember one guy on WarpComm saying it sounded like chainmail being dragged over a metal sheet. Without the video, I'd have been inclined to agree, but it makes so much more sense with the visuals. It's a shame Confield was never released in a visual format.

Tough call between 1 and 3 for me. Dial, I get what's going on but the endlessly rising motif, while a fun aural illusion, doesn't do anything for me heart or me brane. Gantz Graf is small but perfectly formed complex brutality. Cap.IV is of a kind with Lentic Catachresis, perhaps a fraction more haunting at the start and a fraction more dissonant at the end? Last time I spun this I thought it all broke down maybe a minute too soon, the noise went on too long, this time it seems fine.

"Cap.IV" is the best Autechre track of the past ten years. Easily.

my favorite ep of theirs, and this is the one I loan out to older friends who've cut their teeth on computer music classics and debate Bayle vs. Risset or what a turning point Harvey's 'Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco' is but can't bring themselves to listen to anything with a 'beat' -- i.e. beats have changed since the last time you heard them

They think it sounds like robot insects.

For some reason I really dislike all the non-Gantz Graf songs on this.
