they are definitely all dorks, so you have to get over that. but day9 is actually not at all focused on specific build orders, he talks about strategy a lot, though. memorizing build orders isn't as important as just understanding the basic technique of how to be time/resource efficient. he doesn't seem to do just normal casts of replays that much, but when he casted the MLG Dallas tournament it was live and it was really fun to watch.

I'm back...can't stay away.

Day9 is my favorite caster. You can watch and d/l archives here: http://day9tv.blip.tv/posts?view=archive&nsfw=dc

Recently been going 3-4 rax with stim, combat shields, concussive shells, single factory and port. Seems pretty effective. Ebay for quick upgrades and to enable PF on expansions.

Uh, is it just me or does this day9 guy spend 2/3 of his video talking into the camera instead of showing gameplay? Maybe I just picked the wrong videos?

mh, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:08 (thirteen years ago) link

most of his videos are set up like a lecturer talking to you about how to play SC2, so yeah, a lot of it is just his face while he talks to you. from what i've seen at least half of it is him talking over gameplay, though.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:30 (thirteen years ago) link

As expressive as he is, and as great as his points are, his camera presence does not convince me that this technique is one he has mastered.

lol

hahah I went through a few days of watching nothing but high level replays on youtube

i am never going to play this game, but have watched several hours of high level replays. what the hell is wrong with me??

Calumny (stevie), Thursday, 18 November 2010 08:37 (thirteen years ago) link

It's a pro sport in uh, korea, y'know. I'm kind of amused by how much this stuff resembles sports call-in shows and fan analysis.

mh, Thursday, 18 November 2010 15:23 (thirteen years ago) link

have the koreans taken to this one as much as they did with the original?

F-Unit (Ste), Thursday, 18 November 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I think they're still doing Brood War tournaments constantly, but yeah, the adoption rate is definitely fairly high.

mh, Thursday, 18 November 2010 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

man I am glad I didn't get this game, I don't need to renew yet another addiction to a Blizzard franchise

ali-baba-boob-job-bomb.jpg (DJP), Thursday, 18 November 2010 16:41 (thirteen years ago) link

HD really annoys me because of the constant malapropisms and whatever it is you call it when people mix up two different cliches.

Husky is kinda endearing in a nerdy way, but that mute button is handy too.

ryan, Thursday, 18 November 2010 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, that is kind of annoying, i find it pretty easy to forgive, though. i don't really know of any other good casters. there are two guys that cast Korean tournaments that are okay, Artosis and Tasteless, one of them is Day9's brother iirc.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 18 November 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

I read a thing about the pro circuit in Korea not taking to SC2 because theyre fighting tooth and nail with Blizzard over rights issues and whatnot. So everything thats televised is still sc1.

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 18 November 2010 17:26 (thirteen years ago) link

They're also having issues where Blizzard is trying to shut down some of those broadcasts since they're unlicensed. It's kind of a clusterfuck.

mh, Thursday, 18 November 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

finally got into this game after months of not being able to cos of work. completed the single player last night and started doing some multiplayer today. jesus christ it's stressful my heart feels like it's about to explode.

anyone keeping up with GSL? LiquidJinro playing in the semi-finals in an hour. so exciting to see a westerner getting so far. i've really grown to like Artosis and Tasteless as casters, they're good dudes. you can watch it as gomtv.net... if you pay twenty bucks :/

cool article. i saw the Boxer vs Rain match he talks about...it was well over an hour long i think.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:26 (twelve years ago) link

anyone else still playing this? i've worked my way up from bronze to diamond and i play teams pretty regularly with friends while on skype, fun times. its easily the most difficult and gratifying game i've ever played--referring to multiplayer, btw, i never played the campaign.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

i saw that Boxer-Rain match, too, pretty crazy

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

diamond, wow! i am barely hanging on in Gold, but i just started again after about a 9 month break. keep losing because i get over confident and just wanna walk my army into their front door.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

i think one reason i enjoy the pro matches is because im just in awe at the tactics and control, but as i improve myself i notice that you have to be aware of like 100 different things at once. if my opponent just harasses me a little i get all out of sorts and forget to do all kinds of things. and on lower level games you can pretty much dictate how your opponent plays through psychological means, make them over-commit to defense, etc.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:40 (twelve years ago) link

I have played only a handful of actual ranked matches here and there and tend to play FFA for random fun when I have free time. Yet, somehow, battle.net thinks I should be in 1v1 platinum? 4v4 I get since it's less-trafficked and I am decent at coordinating when I have a team to watch my back. I think if I play a few more times it'll bump me down to a more sensible league.

unwarranted display names of ilx (mh), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:41 (twelve years ago) link

im overmatched at Gold i think, so it's only a matter of time. frankly it would be a relief!

i've been watch the MLG events, but just now discovered gomtv so it'll be fun to see more GSL.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:42 (twelve years ago) link

ryan otm.

I think the main thing I've noticed is that there are parts of the game that are very race-specific that you have to get good at to compete with anyone who knows their shit. I play protoss mostly, and the game changes incredibly if you can do sentry force field micromanagement.

unwarranted display names of ilx (mh), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

the less you play the less accurate your ranking is, so if you play more it should start matching you up against people at a similar level to you pretty quickly.

up to around gold-plat, the number one thing to pay attention to is your macro (i.e. worker production, not getting supply blocked, spending your resources constantly), the second most important thing is to keep your eye on the mini-map so you don't miss important stuff or get caught out of position, then third is scouting and engaging correctly.

ryan, i used to have the same problem (keep losing because i get over confident and just wanna walk my army into their front door,) but if you start constantly poking at them and scouting them to keep tabs on what their army is looking like and where its positioned you'll be able to find more effective times/places to engage. it took me a long time to stop underestimating everyone i played against, the general level of skill in sc2 is pretty amazing.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah another big problem is macro--i get tons of money but dont build enough production. and not the best at scouting yet...i can either do that OR macro, but not both at the same time yet. im basically trying to add one skill at a time.

I really hope Boxer pulls out a tournament victory in the near future.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:59 (twelve years ago) link

ah, i'm always rooting for the foreigners myself, really wanna see IdrA or Naniwa take down another MLG. i doubt it'll happen this year, though.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 18:37 (twelve years ago) link

as far as Koreans its all about NesTea and DRG for me

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 30 August 2011 18:39 (twelve years ago) link

DRG is a Zerg right?

People complain about that slow asphyxiation/war of attrition style of Terran but I find it kind of mesmerizing.

I find Boxer to be an entertaining player but also I think it'd be fun for the celebrity old timer to pull one out.

It's amazing how fast these guy's stars can rise and fall--seems like a stressful way to make a living.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:00 (twelve years ago) link

I mean I don't know if you can call the way someone plays a video game "charismatic" but that's how I feel about boxer.

Watching one of these tournaments all weekend like it's football is a great way to spend a summer weekend though.

ryan, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

Oh yeah, I definitely find certain play-styles very charismatic. That is certainly true of Boxer, he comes up with really unique builds and maximizes the value of his units. Players like MVP and Thorzain take that asphyxiation style Terran to the extreme. Thorzain is Swedish, but he recently went to Korea to compete in GSL and the Koreans call him the "spoon" Terran because his style is so slow and meticulous they say its like he's killing his opponent with a spoon, haha.

Yeah, DRG is a Korean Zerg, so is NesTea. I love DRG for his aggressive counter-attacking style, and I love NesTea for his defensive play and unbelievably perfect decision-making. NesTea's ZvZ is so good that he has over 90% win-rate in ZvZ in the GSL, and ZvZ is considered one of the most unpredictable, volatile match-ups--no one else even comes close to that kind of consistency in any match up.

one month passes...

this Idra vs Boxer series from last weekend was high drama: http://tv.majorleaguegaming.com/videos/78101-clr6-egidra-vs-slayersboxer-game-3

(starts with game 3 and you have to skip around 10 minutes of pre-game...)

Listening to this Sportscenter-style analysis of Terran vs. Zerg in the pre-game is killing me.

polyphonic, Thursday, 20 October 2011 21:30 (twelve years ago) link

i actually went to MLG with some friends, it was really, really fun. the Idra/Boxer series was awesome, but the series that Idra played right after against Bomber was even better, the crowd was soooo into it.

yeah I just watched this whole thing, p surprised that I loved everything abt it really, but like at the end whenever the announcers would shout GEE GEE at the same time I would die a lil inside

Anyone else kinda more into watching than playing these days? Feel like I've reached a plateau and am just grinding out the same strata over and over ... And losing still really hurts.

calstars, Friday, 21 October 2011 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

Watching makes me want to play but then I do and it doesn't look like Boxer vs Idra, haha. I am trying to force myself to do things I'm not good at, losing more than normal, and hopefully better in the long run.

That idea v bomber was great too. Almost feel bad for Idra running the gauntlet of Boxer's early pressure and Bomber's macro-Terran style to just lose to what seemed to be pretty standard Protoss play from MC. I'm actually really excited to see the next MLG next month.

i peaked at high diamond, getting matched against some masters players, and i got to the point where i realized i'd have to start putting serious time into playing more to get any better, but i wasn't really up for that kinda commitment. and it wasn't really fun for me when i wasn't improving, so i quit.

Played last weekend against Zerg. Opponent upgraded their overlords and came and dropped a zergling army on my main gg.
