Ah yes, the Durutti live experience... I caught a show in Manchester in 1994, Peter Hook on guest bass guitar for a few numbers, Vini actually forgetting the words to "Missing boy", my brother saying "This is so dull" between every song, me punching him...

Doors: 7.30
Tickets: £16.00

return of durruti column most amazing record ever,, Hannet on genius form with synths and drums, vini, soaring...

Somebody Elses Party, recent album, some great moments, but much of it ruined by some guy with laptop that produces quite a lot of it.

The bonus tracks on the CD reissue of Return Of... are to die for.

Bimble (bimble), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic.

This is gonna make me sound too emo, but when I found out my granddad had died (and I was very close to him) I just put on "Prayer" and let it play on repeat for about an hour and just let the sadness take me over completely. I can't imagine anything else that would have captured sorrow and introspect of the moment any better.

My favorite album is actually Vini Reilly, but Another Setting, Return of, LC, and Without Mercy round out my top 5.

Anyone know the tracklisting of this 'Best Of' thing?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 07:35 (nineteen years ago) link

i can't seem to find it online..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 9 September 2004 08:11 (nineteen years ago) link

it's there, i'm listening to it now...

direct url for the real audio:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/rpms/r2_radcliffewed.rpm

(this should open in your browser. i always rightclick and select 'play in realplayer' as the controls are then easier to use)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 9 September 2004 11:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard it, on R2.

I liked the guitar playing a lot. It reminded me of the Edge trying to sound like Jimi Hendrix. I didn't likethe backing tracks so much.

It made me think that I ought to have some of the DC's music. What do you think I would like?

the chimefox, Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

PF - I will do you a CD of the best stuff if you like.

If you were to choose a whole album I think you'd like 'The Return Of' (the debut), 'LC' (the second album), 'Without Mercy' or 'Vini Reilly'.

My fave is 'Obey The Time', but it may not be your cup of tea.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I think I actually prefer Another Setting.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, that's my second favourite. Actually I will put some tracks from this on yr CD, PF. Some good stuff on there - Bordeaux, The Beggar, You've Heard It Before.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Don't forget Tomorrow from Circuses and Bread! It's criminal that all those CDs are so expensive.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:22 (nineteen years ago) link

i download some after they were mentioned on the "break up" thread (can't recall which tracks) and i have to say i was not impressed. maybe i got the wrong songs but the ones i listened to seemed, uh, too... "noodly", i guess, is the only way i can think of putting it.

dysøn (dyson), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:30 (nineteen years ago) link

They're not expensive here!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I like a lot of the different styles of Vini, all of which sound uniquely Vini, but amongst the catalog there is definitely a selection of songs that are supremely good moody new wave/pop songs. See above: Bordeaux, The Beggar, Tommorow etc

They cost like 30 dollars in america.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I count myself spectacularly lucky that I got most of the mid-1990s reissues free thanks to a friend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Best Durutti Ever : 'Say What You Mean EP'. Just perfect.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Are the latest DC UK reissues still in print?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:05 (nineteen years ago) link

No I think they're OOP now, but v.easy to get. You could get them in quite big chains like HMV until recently, but I think the supply has dried up. Most decent indie outlets have them or can get them - Sister Ray, Action etc. Also v.easy to get on ebay. They're usually £6.99 or £7.99 - if you really want them it might be worth ordering a few from the UK, although the exchange rate is crap for you now.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Amazon seems to have them. Actually the one I don't have is Without Mercy, which is the one you rarely see. I had it on vinyl but it was a dodgy pressing and I never got around to getting the CD. I must get this before they disappear for good.

Great DC memory from 1985 - them doing half of Without Mercy live on the Tube 'Factory Special' one Friday night. Also on were Section 25 doing 'Hilltop' (a video - not live IIRC) and the Factory All-Stars fronted by Simon Topping, Beverly McDonald, Caesar amongst others doing various songs including LWTUA. On a FRIDAY TEA-TIME! Anyone else see this?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:31 (nineteen years ago) link

don't think they've ever been released in the US in any format, actually. When I was in high school I had to go to some fancy stores and pay top dollar to get original CDs, I had Valuable Passages which I paid 25 or so bucks for, which seemed like a ton of money to my 15 yr old mind. Maybe it's a job for Acute, or perhaps LTM will be on the case. LTM stuff used to be pricey here but now Darla's carrying them for 15 bucks.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Doc: if you get time to make this CD, I would appreciate it: thanks: I look forward to receiving it. !

*looks* erk!

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Looks good. I wonder if the whole of Without Mercy 1 and 2 are on there or have they edited them? Unedited, they're approx 39 minutes together.

So pleased to see Contra-Indications on there. I love that track!

PF - I will try and make the compilation CD this week.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:21 (nineteen years ago) link

That first disc has the same tracklisting as "Valuable Passages" with "LFO/MOD" stuck on the end (wasn't on the original CD, just the vinyl version), so I guess the two "Without Mercy" tracks are the excerpts used on that compilation.

Andrew Norman, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

what a strange record cover.

I used to have valuable passages on CD but lost it, then had it on vinyl, I'll have to check but did the double vinyl have more songs? Just LFO/MOD the difference?

I hadn't heard any newer stuff untill I got limewire and was able to dl some. I was suprised how good much of it is. Esp. a song called Drinking Time.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:17 (nineteen years ago) link

no spanish lament!

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't even recognise any of the titles on the second disc except for the last song. where are they from?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:24 (nineteen years ago) link

"Otis" and "Requiem Again" are both from Vini Reilly
"Mello (Part 1)" is from Rebellion
"My Irascible Friend" and "Fado" are from Sex & Death

etc

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:36 (nineteen years ago) link

ah it's the songs from sex and death I didn't recognize.

really I barely know the name of any of his songs, I guess.

should I buy:

obey the time
bread and circuses
time was gigantic
dry
fidelity
rebellion

?

someone else's party was the first album I picked up since Vini Reilly and it's excellent.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I've had Valuable Passages on vinyl for years. Kinda wish I had it on CD instead, but I don't recall seeing it on CD, either. Dr. C might be right that the Say What You Mean/Mean What You Say EP is best.

Bimble (bimble), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah i have the 2xLP of it, but i don't think it's ever been issued on CD afaik

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 18:54 (nineteen years ago) link

"Otis" = absolute classic. Better combination of samples and original music than Moby could ever have dreamed of. I saw Vini walking past the office I where I work a couple of weeks ago, and also Howard Devoto a couple of days before (separately); both with hands full of Tesco bags, so I'm pretty sure he does eat occasionally.

neil tacus (tacit), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 01:11 (nineteen years ago) link

According to this here discog : http://users.rcn.com/rpsweb/durutti-column/discog.html#releases, Valuable Passages had an excerpt from 'Piece of An Out Of Tune Grand Piano' and 'Blind Elevator Girl' on it. Otherwise, yes - CD 1 is the same as VP.

It was issued on CD.

Kyle - buy Obey The Time. Absolutely fantastic recd.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 07:51 (nineteen years ago) link

i am slowly falling in love with dc. first i had a night in new york, a cd i hardly ever listened to. then i got lc which totally smashed me. especially the 1st track, sketch for dawn i with some amazing drumming and missing boy. then i got the return which is slightly less good but still nice as the doc already said. i just ordered vini reilly.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:25 (nineteen years ago) link

as said before, I had Valuable Passages on CD, paid a good deal of money for it at the time...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 20:45 (nineteen years ago) link

"Valuable Passages" was my first ever CD purchase and thus has a place in my heart forever.

"Say what you mean" was also my first taste of DC, 99p in HMV sale in August 85. Played nothing else for a month once I bought it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Ned, mail me off board with the track listing. I'm interested!

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Vini Reilly is obviously an anagram of Iggy Pop, looking at that cover.

I found Circuses and Bread in the used bin today so I jumped on it. I need to get more, now.

Absolutely brilliant clips!

I, too, fear the worst news whenever Andy sees this topic revived. But he is still here. It brings tears to my eyes to see him play, truly. He has had so many important things to say and the fact that the ability to use his musical voice was all but taken away form him is one of the least fair occurrences that I can remember. There is a lot of dust on the headstock of that Stratocaster in the clip that Nick posted. This is so discouraging. Vini is so brave though, for allowing himself to have video taken when his chops are not what they used to be. It is still the beautiful music that only he is capable of making.

Very bittersweet to see, but I am very glad that I was able to see them all the same. Thank you for posting, dj.

two months pass...

The original 3600 LP sleeves were made of coarse sandpaper (similar to the Situationist book Mémoires), designed to scratch LPs which were placed on either side of it.

Didn't people alphabetize their records back in 1980, or was Vini assuming he'd never put out another album?

can confirm. source: my own music. it happens even when i'm not trying.

also enoch, not to be a total downer, but there is a possibility of that being the case because of vin's world view at that time. still a funny gag, especially if he was planning on making another record.

But, yeah a poignant read. That line about gusts of wind blowing his words away is so vivid. Never knew about his early life on the streets or suicide attempts.
