I love early Saint Etienne in balearic italo-house mode

So this seems as good a thread as any to ask...

a *long* time ago, probably about the early to mid-90s, i was full on into Saint Etienne and also into the house/rave scene. i was at my local DJ shop and found a "white label" that actually had a printed up label, but looked a bit like a bootleg of sorts, and it was credited to Saint Etienne. The track is called "Deep in the Coast of the Exstasy" or something along those lines

i'm at work and haven't looked at the record for a while, but i've never seen anything even mentioning it w/r/t St Etienne in any of their discogs, etc. It's actually a really great deep house track, very italo pianos, balaeric vibe, etc. It reminds me of something Creation would have put out around the time (Like "Nena de Ibiza", etc)

Anyone ever see this or know what I'm taking about? No googling has seemed to help me out at all.

Probably doesn't top any proper Etienne LP for me, but this is good. Showcases their varied approaches to tunes at the time, and a great stopgap to hold us over after the wonderful "So Tough."

Couldn't get enough of 'Filthy' at the time. That bass! But as far as odds/ends collections, "Continental" still far and away holds the crown.

Great stuff ... ino largely because they put so much thought into their b-sides/extra tracks, a compilation of them would have to be good. Filthy - what a track!

speaking of St. Etienne odds n' ends comps, what do we think of Nice Price?

hank (hank s), Thursday, 22 June 2006 12:04 (seventeen years ago) link

it's not really an album but a b-sides comp so yeah, people call it filler.

what is 'nice price'? amazon don;t seem to have it.

Nice Price is the demo/alternate version St. Etienne recently sold though their fan club...(I *gulp* joined just so I could buy it)...it's quite good, certainly one can see how these versions didn't make their respective albums, but they're sufficiently different from the final versions to stand on their own (i.e. they don't feel or sound like demos)...probably copies can be found on eBay at this point...

It's still for sale through the merchandise link on their web site.

fourteen years pass...

Found an old CD I'd made at least a decade ago and had an idea that I might put it on Spotify. Seem to be lots of gaps on there though. For some reason it as called "Lovely is the New Edge" but quite why is blurry. I'm not sure there is much rhyme or reason but I always loved "You Need A Mess of Help".

1. (Not sure what this is but it is 1:19 in length)
2. Late Morning.
3. Anderson's Unbound
4/5/6. Western Wind
7. Is It True?
8. Downey CA
9. How We Used To Live
10. Seven Summers
11. Sylvie
12. Zip Code
13. Amateur
14. Finisterre
15. Swim Swan Swim
16. Heart Failed (Bridge & Tunnel)
17. Abby, I Hardly Knew You
18. The Process
19. Ivyhouse
20. Railway Jam

And if the 1:19 is instrumental with some la-la vocals from Sarah it's probably Half-Timbered from Places to Visit

Oh, good calls on both of those.

two years pass...

Has there been much in an "amazing b-side" sort of way since ... whatever is the latest thing on that comp above?
