It's a slipperly slope, Julie Doiron was deemed 'depressing'. And don't forget Neil Young, you know, the guy who did Harvest and Harvest Moon.

Ranikin Family and Lorena Mckennitt.

My mom hipped me to:

Michael Jackson - Off the Wall (album)
Lipps Inc. - Funky Town
Prince - Controversy (album)
Prince - 1999 (album)
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
Madonna - Holiday
Mtume - Juicy Fruit
Laid Back - White Horse
Maurice - This is Acid

When I was in 1st grade, we had to write a letter to our mothers for mothers day stating why we love them. Mine says "I don't know y you buy me them records, but I like them."

She has that framed.

Shae married a man who hipped me to Kraftwerk when I was 10, granted he's a classic rock fan for the most part.

She now likes Limp Bizkit.

I'm not sure how this helps your mom, but wishiful thinking...

Wait, my mom listened to the "big band" channel that comes with cable service and it was like the best thing I think she's ever played. And I think she has Louis Armstrong's greatest hits now. At least she doesn't listen to Michael Franks...it sounds like a brand of vegetarian hot dogs.

The mother of all music festivals: Mamapalooza?

My mom loves Anne Murray (who I enjoy), Daniel Lavoie (whose one and only album I LOVE), Buffalo Springfield (Just look at my previous threads and you know my feelings on anything that has Neil), and then the stuff like Celine Dion, Kathy Lee Gifford, etc... SO she looses much of the cool-factor in my eyes... but its all good, she's my mom.

fourteen years pass...

It's Mother's Day (in America anyway), so why not revive this thread?

My mom:

- bought us blank tapes the day the classic rock station played 24 hours of Rolling Stones
- took me and my best friend to see Neil Young & Crazy Horse, on the tour where Sonic Youth and Social Distortion opened
- loved New Order's Substance and Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense
- liked Iggy Pop's voice, but hated Brian Johnson's voice, so I wasn't allowed to play AC/DC in the house but could get away with Metallic K.O.
- told me "jazz is music for people who think they're smart"

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Sunday, 12 May 2019 15:47 (four years ago) link

- drove down to the Masonic temple box office in Detroit to wait in line with the freaks to get me Frank Zappa tickets, because the ticket outlet at the local department store was on the fritz. When she finally got to the window they assumed she was there for Nutcracker tickets.

- took my sister and me to the Uptown Throwdown hip-hop show, when I was in high school and my sister was in middle school.

Good thread too:
Things Your Parents Say/Said About Music

Mom: Who is this?
Me: They're called Low. The guy and lady singing are married.
Mom: I hope they're in counseling.
