I am listening to Al Jarreau right now. I'm named after him. I've always felt obligated to want nothing to do with him, especially as I was known as Jarreau for most of my life, before I started going by my first name. But whatever, I feel like I can make peace with dude now.

i like the whole L is for Lovers album but when i hear this it sounds so similar to a lot of the synthpop i liked back then. i mean, the eurogliders could have had a hit with this song.

I don't know how many times I've passed over buying We Got By in a record shop just because I liked the design of its sleeve. Now I'm finally listening to it (which is basically my first dedicated exposure to Jarreau) and "Lock All the Gates" is one of the most amazing songs I've heard in who knows how long. So excited there's about a zillion more albums to check out!

He was so good. A real mid-life find for me, he made the sort of music I wouldn't have made time for in my youth -- pop jazz was something I heard a bit of when I was a kid because my dad, a pre-bop jazz man, was always trying to keep current and he liked vocal jazz. But it took me until my thirties to grab some Al Jarreau - he made wonderful records that I've listened to in several different corners of the world, and his music seemed tailor-made to make a day better. Like gentle sunlight, his music. Sad to hear that he is gone.

I'm not impressed by High Crime. I can barely hear him amid the syndrums and faux funk. The tunes just aren't very good.

High Crime is his weakest 80s album imo.
