"The Violence Of Truth" - The The

What is evil? what is love?
What is the force that possesses us?
Where is the beauty? where is the truth?
Where is the force that watches over you?

What is it that makes us ashamed to be white?
(when we close our ears to the sound of machine gun)

And while the niggers of this world are starving
With their mouths wide open
What is it that turns the coins we throw at them
Into worthless little tokens?

Why is it that anything on this earth we do not understand
We are pushed onto our knees to worship or to damn?

Those are the rules of religion
Those are the laws of the land
That's how the forces of darkness have suppressed the spirit of man

That's why human beings still walk on all fours
Whilst in the presence of their so called superiors

Somethings telling you to wake up and salute
The dangers of obedience and the violence of truth

God is evil, god is love
God is the force that possesses us
God is beauty, god is truth
God is the force that is watching over you

Very breathy delivery. I gave this to a cute girl in the 9th grade because it made me feel like a big homo at the time. In 9th grade, I was concerned with music being too "gay."

asdf troll, Monday, 29 November 2004 21:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not especially critical in that I can tolerate most everything, *however* I hate The The. "Infected" made me want to tear my hair out and I heard part of this and it made me want to die. So pretentious in the worst way possible. I'm not even sure why it bothers me so much. The cover is awful.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 November 2004 21:09 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, so maybe I am not too dense but just lack the breadth to catch any Lennon allusion. All I know about Lennon, musically, is the Legend compilation so if it isn't on there then I probably haven't heard it. and if it is on there then it probably gets filed in the
"never listened the lyrics close enough" pile.

gspm (gspm), Monday, 29 November 2004 21:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, Lennon was singing that "Woman is the NIgger of the World", so the connection really ends there....unless "nigger of the world" is some established indelicate euphemism for "opporessed individual".

Personally speaking, I don't believe Johnson was using the term in an offensive way. He's decrying the world for treating these individuals like "niggers".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 November 2004 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Just outta curiosity, Dan, how did you feel about "Rock'n'Roll Nigger" by Patti Smith?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 29 November 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

To date I've never heard that song because of the title.

Also, there are far too many allusions to the situation in Africa circa 1987 for that particular "niggers of the world" to not include the specific racial overtone.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 November 2004 21:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Call me a PC prude, but I've never felt comfortable with any use of the word.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow, Spencer unleashing the hate there!

Matt Johnson is someone I enjoy and don't enjoy in almost equal measure. His career as such is so wonderfully random at points in the eighties that I'm downright amazed -- he's one of the chief collaborators on Marc Almond's brilliant, weird solo debut Untitled, for instance. My review of 45 RPM on the AMG sums up my ambiguous appreciation though it's a positive piece in general. I don't think I would need more than that comp these days, though Burning Blue Soul is the possible exception.

To my mind, the best thing Johnson ever did was the set at the first KROQ Weenie Roast in 1993, second from the top -- he started with a slow, monstrous but stripped down version of "Infected" that's better than any recorded take, and the version of "Love is Stronger Than Death" was harrowingly beautiful. Mind Bomb couldn't touch it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm always uncomfortable about art-crowd artists throwing racial epithets in my face as if to say, "See?! In your FACE, maaaan..." without really knowing how the word feels to those it's aimed at.

If that makes any sense, which it probably doesn't.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 29 November 2004 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

that version of Infected is on the outtake album "Solitude" as "Dis-infected" and yes its awesome.

that does make sanse, in that there's only one context that these people will ever think of, and it's not the same one I'm thinking of. I don't really have time to be pc in the face of indie-rock racism

this was my first The The album, and I would love it less if I had heard Infected or Dusk first. so I'm glad I didn't.

the "niggers of the world line" I'm sure is a Lennon reference, but mainly (as Alex says) an accusation that rich westerners contributing to charity for brown people far away (or rich western rockstars organising charity?) view the objects of their largesse with patronising or contemptuous eyes. it's terrible heavy-handed student wankery, but far from the worst offender on that score across the album.

Really dark and interesting production.

nb Naked Self recorded live in studio! (Dusk too but more post-production & overdubs & whatnot on the latter)

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 12:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I like some of The The. But Matt Johnson does leave me with the impression of someone cramming a message down my throat til I gag and pounding away at the obvious.

10 minus points for the disgraceful new cover art on all of the lp re-issues. what the fck is he playing at?

This is the _Heart Of Darkness_ argument all over again.

When you add "What makes us ashamed to be white?" to "niggers of the world", you do not get criticism of how the white people treat said brown people like niggers; you get criticism of how the white people aren't treating the niggers the way they should be treated. The patronizing contempt is inherent in the criticism and not at all addressed by the song.

("If the real Jesus Christ were to stand up today/he'd be gunned down cold by the CIA!")

Let's get this back on track. If Matt Johnson were to redo this song today, perhaps he'd write, "If the real Jesus Christ were to stand up today/he'd be run right out of the CIA!"

**What say you of Mind Bomb? Thoughtfully Explosive or a dim-bulbed dud of a damp squib?**

It's utterly worthless, as is all of his post-Soul Mining work. Wretchedly heavy-handed hectoring tripe - like spending the evening with the pub-bore. Soul Mining is terrible too come to think of it.

(BTW - I think the drummer is David Palmer ex-ABC, not David Robinson)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:04 (nineteen years ago) link

The question is really more about whether Johnson fucked up and completely misspoke with those lyrics or is he playing the role of the bigoted bigheart liberal or is he actually a bigoted bigheart liberal.

Bimble (bimble), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

hmm, Dan, I'll have to think abt this. I bought Mind Bomb when it came out but had never noticed those lyrics till you pointed 'em out today. My instintual reaction based on what lil I know abt him is that it was a heavyhanded liberal thang, have to go back to the lyrics and think abt what was goin' on in Africa at that point that was such a telling point for you. I dunno.

otherwise

I love love love Soul Mining and have found the albuns since to be dimnishing returns (actually heard Infected first but after discovering Soul Mining was lost) Mind Bomb has a cpl great songs but as an album does now wear well for me.

H (Heruy), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:50 (nineteen years ago) link

certainly the "nigger" reference has got to be a kind of play-acting, look how sick and cynical we've become sort of attitude. And undoubtedly a reference to Lennon's use. Might be a bit crass, but it doesn't fit my picture of the guy at all that there's a racist impulse behind it.

OTOH, it's a kind of ponderous album. Good Morning Beautiful is great though. And I still find myself humming Beaten Generation ocassionally.

But really can't compare with Burning Blue Soul / Soul Mining / Pornography of Despair stuff.

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 2 December 2004 20:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Pornography of Despair
Sweet Bird of Truth
Dogs of Lust

What do you call these? Allegorical metaphors? Johnson's quite obsessed with'em, it seems.

Soul Mining is one of my favorite records ever. Dusk was on seriously heavy rotation for almost a year and i have to agree that when you see the songs live, they expand and contract in all the right places. I saw them right after Dusk came out at Tipitina's in New Orleans. I was the guy stage left, front row with mouth wide open...oh yeah, i was also the guy holding up a Johnny Marr t-shirt that happened to piss off the guy filling in for Johnny on the tour.

Mind Bomb is my least favorite of all the albums i have by The The but it does have a few songs i completely love. I am a bit disappointed by Marr's work on Mind Bomb though. Could be that i wanted some Smiths type jangle and got Ecstatic Noise instead.

45RPM is a fantastic compilation though. Nicely done

"Good Morning, Beautiful" is an amazing song.

I still stand behind everything I said upthread re: "The Violence of Truth", though.

I've been listening to this album for the first time in years and "Good Morning, Beautiful" (the first The The song I heard) is still as stark, evocative, bombastic and fantastic as it was in 1987.

HIS VAGINA IS MAKING HIM CRAVE SALAD. (HI DERE), Friday, 19 June 2009 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

That and August & September were the two main standouts for me. I'll need to listen to the whole thing again.

But the goddamn three albums either side of it are just...amazing. (The two after, sans Hank Williams cover record, not two before)

I can't actually recall that song to mind at all. Probably don't want to. Album takes an age to pick up again after its opening salvo. Actually, I remember "Kingdom Of Rain" not being all that bad. Maybe I'll stick it on.

It is the next good song on the album, yes.

haha and now I'm about to drop a rongbomb but hey who gives...

NakedSelf = awesome example of an artist releasing their best record over 20 years after they began. I'm not even joking. By a nose from Infected and Dusk.

gosh I actually dig this shit (country matters), Friday, 19 June 2009 17:31 (fourteen years ago) link

In fact, "ShrunkenMan" is one of the 10 best songs of the decade. Flat-out.

gosh I actually dig this shit (country matters), Friday, 19 June 2009 17:32 (fourteen years ago) link

I have NakedSelf with me, as well; I remember liking it but still thinking Infected was still the best album, mostly because of "Sweet Bird of Truth" and the awesome horns that were later sampled for a remix of Queen Latifah's "Dance For Me".

"Sweet Bird of Truth"

This was one of the most influential songs on my developing teenage music consciousness.

"Out Of The Blue (Into The Fire)" was even more so.

Those two tracks do nothing short of fry minds and kick asses.

Anyway, the music and playing is so great across the board on the The The records that I can handle the lyrical stumbles.

Pretty nice write-up here: http://thequietus.com/articles/16952-the-the-mind-bomb-anniversary-review

When it came out, it certainly felt like a bit of a let-down compared to the previous two albums but it has certainly aged nicely what with the prophetic aspects and Johnny Marr's fantastic guitar.

I miss Matt.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 02:01 (nine years ago) link

I feel Matt peaked with the first version of "Uncertain Smile", so my fave album of his is Burning Blue Soul. I quite like "Gravitate To Me" though.

Paul, Tuesday, 23 December 2014 02:12 (nine years ago) link

xpost Wow, what an overheated, overwritten piece. Well-suited to the album, I suppose, which like most of his stuff is so musically sharp and on-point it offsets the OTT insanity of the vocals.

Also, I know I've said it before, but this era of this band was so great live. Like, this is awesome, though I wish I could find the 1993 version:

Theer is a new film out, The Inertia Variations, and it includes a new song from him. And both film and song are good. I went to a screening where Matt Johnson did a Q&A afterwards, and there should be a bunch of stuff coming out soon. Not a lot of it is new The The songs, though.
