saying it was just a party record read like a dismissal to me

It wasn't :)

style is content.

Especially when it comes to songs like this.

Nuthin wrong with a good party song.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 18 November 2004 01:40 (nineteen years ago) link

well party song or not I like to listen to it on repeat while sitting immobile in my chair

(ps has anyone heard Frontin' On Debra DJ reset mash-up featuring Beck, Jay-Z and Pharrel? I have this promo 12'' and its also a party)

I totally wasn't feeling this song at first, but my sister got me into it by pointing out I should focus on Snoop's verses rather than all of the little sound-effects and shit.

Pitchfork have panned the album. Not that I'm trusting them or anything! Anyone else heard it yet?

haitch haitch haitch (or any three repetitive sounds) (haitch), Thursday, 18 November 2004 12:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Heard a bit the other day. Like the Destiny's Child album, the single is totally unrepresentative of the rest of the album. It's mostly quite G-Funk in a very lazy way. I'm with Pitchfork to be honest.

Jason J, Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:30 (nineteen years ago) link

The Pitchfork review is bogus becuase they are reviewing the leaked version of the album. The version in stores has a reshuffled tracklisting with about 9 tracks that weren't on the leaked version. "Stay" is NOT on the album. The Leaked Lil Jon song is not the same as the one on the album, etc.

i love the song. i esp love the mouth click and the snooooop-flute (or whatever you'd call it. the lyrics are totally ass, but it's all about texture.

Wow, really? Me doing that would probably lead to me hating the song. I mean, it's one thing to ignore the lyrics in a track, but ignoring the lyrics coming from a voice is something I'm not too sure I can do. And you know, I dug Snoop's early "cheeky gangsta next door" phase, but everything after that just seemed to be "hey, I'm Snoop, and my voice is so damn pleasant that I really don't have to even pretend to put some effort into my lyrics". Which he's right about, but only when he has great beats behind him (thus his stuff with the Neps is almost always grebt.)

mwah hah hah

I'm loving the album. Play me something better than "Ups & Downs", or "Let's Get Blown".

I'm a little sick of "Drop It" now though, as good as it is.

two years pass...

although i wince at my dorky enthusiasm this was a good single

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:32 (seventeen years ago) link

ain't no fun if the dorks have none.
it was a great single.
his new album is pretty good too.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Most of his albums are 'pretty good' I think - its kind of funny how looking back i never expected him to have such a consistent career. The only one I really don't like is his first no limit album, but the two after that are pretty good and although I wasn't wild about "Chuuch to the Palace" that album has some moments too, like "Batman and Robin" where Robin is played by the Lady of Rage.

Oh and the doggfather's not so good either

Same here. But I love how easily he made the transition from *the* new guy to elder statesman, as it were.

guys, pharrell doesnt use drum machines. chad and he use samples in protools. sheesh.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 4 January 2007 17:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Isn't there some live drumming in some of their prod (not talking about nerd's second version of their first album) ?
like in a couple of JTs tracks.

I love there-at-the-scene, blast-from-the-past threads like this. Especially for: the beats sound like they've been made with white noise and tongue-clicking. OMG NO!!!!!

idk why because it never struck me this way before but the part where Pharrell says "You should think about it/take a second" and then it dings is actually really funny to me now. maybe it was supposed to be but I never giggled like I do now when I hear it
