There's no shame in liking DEP. I'm an old veteran of extreme metal mania, and I approve wholeheartedly of Dillinger.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Friday, 5 December 2003 22:15 (twenty years ago) link

Dillinger should appeal to me (I fucking worship Botch), but...they don't.

I think it's because they made the mistake of collaborating with Mike Patton, but to be honest, Calculating Infinity just seems like...well, like they're doing calculations in their heads instead of asking the crucial question, "How can we rock the fucking ceiling off this place?"

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 5 December 2003 22:25 (twenty years ago) link

i like calculating infinity, it's neat. i don't play it that much though. i haven't heard their new singer. or the patton e.p.

nobody has mentioned philly band dyssrythmia(i probably spelled that wrong). i don't really care for the album, too noodly or zappa-ish for me, but they belong on this thread.

scott seward, Friday, 5 December 2003 22:31 (twenty years ago) link

Ha, a coicidence - I was just listening to Atheist "Piece Of Time" (the rerelease which includes some old demo tracks that are simply fantastic). Anyway, some great picks by Oystein above (well not mathrock/core/prog metal indeed), I'll add the following:

Death "Individual Thought Patterns" (their most interesting and best one)
Pestilence "Testimony Of The Ancients" (less weirdness-for-the-sake-of-it than "Spheres" and better songs = their best)

I remember I used to like Rhadamantys and Hybernoid circa 1993 but I don't have any of their albums anymore.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 5 December 2003 23:20 (twenty years ago) link

A lot of bands I love often get labelled with these prog- and math- sub-genres, but I certainly don't consider them so. Slint are the prime example. Math? Eh? Spiderland is, for the most part, pretty simple actually. Radiohead are the 'prog' equivillent. I simply do not understand what makes OK Computer prog-rock beyong a passing resemblance to Pink Floyd, who themselves were only borderline prog-rock.

Whoever recomended 'We Are The Romans' by Botch is talking sense. You should also check out Converge, Envy, Isis and Neurosis in that style. I guess you could say they all have elements of math and/or progressive metal/hardcore.

And don't forget the mind-boggling obvious: Tool.

Re Watchtower - Oystein what did you think of Dangerous Toys?

dave q, Friday, 5 December 2003 23:48 (twenty years ago) link

I never heard them, didn't seem like something I was likely to like.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 6 December 2003 00:27 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think of Neurosis as very prog at all: I hear mostly post-Swans stomp in them. And Cult Of Luna rip Neurosis off shamelessly, and manage to beat them at their own game in the process.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 6 December 2003 00:57 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think Burnt by the Sun are all that bad. The only thing I dislike about them is their generic vocals. I don't think Dillinger collaborating with Patton was a mistake, either.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 6 December 2003 01:58 (twenty years ago) link

i always think of Isis as the big Neurosis ripper offer.but i guess that's pretty obvious.

scott seward, Saturday, 6 December 2003 03:56 (twenty years ago) link

Does anyone like Mike Patton at all?

Rich Handel, Saturday, 6 December 2003 17:33 (twenty years ago) link

Fred Durst?

Stupid (Stupid), Saturday, 6 December 2003 17:36 (twenty years ago) link

Isis do it, too. But Isis and Cult Of Luna are both way better than Neurosis.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 6 December 2003 17:45 (twenty years ago) link

...Isis and Cult Of Luna are not better than Neurosis...

Have you even HEARD A Sun That Never Sets?

Stupid (Stupid), Saturday, 6 December 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

oh, gosh i would have to disagree there. isis can't hold a doom-ridden candle to neurosis.

scott seward, Saturday, 6 December 2003 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

Neurosis is much more tribal compared to Isis, at least going by their later four records (haven't heard the early ones).

Both bands would be the same genre, whatever that is, but I think they have taken different paths, especially in arranging out the rhythms.

Neurosis is space age neolithic music, they sound futuristic and very old at the same time.

I'll have to investigate this Cult of Luna.

earlnash, Saturday, 6 December 2003 18:11 (twenty years ago) link

Exactly earlnash. Space-age neolithic.

If anyone ever re-makes 2001: A Space Odyssey, Neurosis should do the soundtrack.

Stupid (Stupid), Saturday, 6 December 2003 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

I liked Neurosis a lot when I saw them live (a few years ago, opening for Pantera of all acts), but Isis were better, mostly because Isis's live set featured a theremin/didjeridoo duet and Neurosis's was just throb-and-crash for 45 minutes. I think the reason I like Isis more is that they're more subtle, and less overwrought.

I'm dying to hear Necrophagist (sorry). A guy I know has been recommending them to me for what seems like a year already, and I haven't been able to get hold of their stuff.

I didn't even know Candiria were still around, but they either just played or are just about to play NYC. I don't care, though.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago) link

That list is impressive isn't it. Have to big up Cult of Luna again, if you like a little Godspeed! in your Neurosis they are excellent live.

Mei played me Gorguts the other day and I was very taken with it, I'm getting me some of that

How do the Dillinger Escape Plans and Mastodon albums hold up to the previous albums then?

When is the new Isis due?

Randall, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 05:03 (nineteen years ago) link

To me, the new Dillinger dude's a little too much inyourface, and in kind of a generic, shotgun-throat kinda way (not the Cookie Monster thing, the "Lookame, I can go BLURRRRRRRGHHHH" way of been-there. But, if that's your thing, you got it. I'm more from the jazzrock, like Pete Cosey and John Mclaughlin and Sonny Sharrock getting maggatronic with Miles Davis/Funkadelic's live "Maggot Brain"/Tony Williams Lifetime (orig Mcl-Jack Bruce-Larry-Young lineup/McL's DEVOTION, early Maha (before John got that orchestra)/Sharrock w solo and with Last Exit and early Material/Massacre/Original Black Sabbath/Cliff-era Metallica/Mastodon school. I really like Dysrythmnia and reviewed them for the Voice and *still* prob managed to misspell their damn name! Also like Don Caballero, and their last guitarist has a band called Battles, anybody heard it? Oh yeah Dys is kind of like if you were calculating infinity (but still rocking; I don't like much "fusion," that's why I said jazzrock for theat Miles stuff), and factoring in Dillinger, the better Fugazi bass influence, atc. I really liked Relapse's last couple of CONTAMINATED budget-priced samplers (haven't heard previous). Oh yeah, the Oxxes are good "math rock" too, even for those who can't do math (like me).

Don Allred, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:09 (nineteen years ago) link

the new dillinger's ok. i was expecting it to be worse, actually. there's some neat electronic flourishes towards the end. but overall it's more or less in the vein of the dillinger/patton EP. definitely not quite as monolithically pummeling as calculating infinity.

Just bought the Roadrunner 2-for-1 reissue of Gorguts' Considered Dead and The Erosion Of Sanity, along with two Return To Forever albums, Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy and Romantic Warrior. Hymn rocks more than Warrior, but both are good. And I like Erosion better than Obscura.

I've been listening to the new Necrophagist disc quite a bit, because I'm gonna review it for the Cleveland Scene, and this means I've also been listening to Pestilence's Testimony Of The Ancients and Death's Individual Thought Patterns a lot, too. Both of those are better than the Necrophagist disc.

I went looking for Cynic's Focus at the record store today, but couldn't find it. They did have both albums by Gordian Knot, the bassist's new band, though. Are those any good? Lots of 70s prog folks (Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, some others) on 'em.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

The first Gordian Knot's pretty nice, sort of easy listening fusion sorta thing... What I've heard of the second has made me not bother investing.
Has "Focus" been rereleased then? I know it's been OOP for a good many years, but there has been talk about Roadrunner putting it out again now that they're doing all those wonderful reissues.

I need to get that Gorguts twofer myself, those two albums are amongst my favorites of early 90s brutal dumbass-metal.
The new Necrophagist is getting a ludicrous amount of hype... How is it compared to earlier material? I always found Necrophagist to be pretty boring, so I hadn't really considered the possibility that this one might be worth checking out.

Obscura's still one of the be-all end-all metal albums, to me.

I just noticed that I accidentally dissed Ripping Corpse in my old post there. Ripping Corpse is GREAT! Pre-Dim Mak dumb brutal death with that nice techish fling to it that makes the rabbits wiggle their noses and ears. Vomiting Corpses on the other hand...

Despite not really liking them myself, I'll add another search: Axis Of Perdition. Takes that whole "cyber-black metal" trend of the late 90s into really brutal territory. Think Emperor turned into slightly rusty, but nonetheless precise and smelly, spaceships of mass debunnification. Not to be mistaken for the rather great Axis Of Advance and their Voivod-goes-black metal schtick.
Anaal Nathrakh might deserve a mention while we're in this territory.

Some might dig on Misanthrope too.... Lots of fancy doodiddling in a black metal framework that nonetheless recalls Iron Maiden far, far too much. Their fanbase doesn't seem too big, and I can't count myself as part of it either, but those that get into it seem to all get rabid.

For those of you more into the ol' thrash thing (mainly the moshy Anthrax side) Forced Entry's Uncertain Future's worth mentioning. Maybe not quite as proggy as this thread might be for, but what the hey...
I need to just step away from this thread and pretend it never appeared, as I fear I'll come back to it every 6 months for the rest of my life (eventually to say that metal suxxx and u shuld all listn 2 SHAKTI instddd dudz rulz like fuzen but acustik!)

Wow, 52 posts over 16 months and not one mention of the The Fucking Champs/c4am95? Hmm. They might be too clustered in with the indie-rock bands and they flirt with synth-electronics which may be too outside for metal purists but there music is about as math-y as I can think of.

I think I said this on the math-rock thread but Heavy Vegetable's "Song For Wesley Willis" is pretty genius in time-structure.

Extol was mentioned negatively way up at the top of this thread. I just got their new one in the mail today; haven't played it yet.

The most recent Flying Luttenbachers disc, The Void, is their most guitar-heavy in awhile. And now Mick Barr's joined the band! He'll be with 'em whenever they tour the US, and he'll be on the next CD, whenever that comes out. Weasel Walter + Mick Barr = my head exploding.

Not sure if anyone is going to agree with this due to unfavorable associations with the uber-corny metalcore scene, but The Red Chord's Fused Together In Revolving Doors is some BRUTAL SHIT. Really nice combination of metalcore chug and death metal technicality/vocals/speed. I think they're coming out with a new one this year, however I suspect it won't be as good having lost their SICK DRUMMER to some corny band on Victory.

has anyone heard the album "Five Minutes" by Bowl Ethereal? it was offered free if you signed up for their email list a year or two ago...it's the Honor Role/Breadwinner/Loincloth dude but anyway it's kind of brilliant, this incredibly complex, knotty math metal but there's five songs of exactly (to the second) 1 minute each.

math metal is kind of made for 1 minute songs

My wife has started listening to music again. After being in a long phase of "just whatever's on the radio", she has emerged as a fan of the more progressive and melodic strains of metal. Mostly a lot of progressive metalcore - stuff like Northlane and Erra.

Today she asked me to find something similar to Ne Obliviscaris, so I guess progressive metal with a violin or other strings. Any thoughts?

Also, she's interested in newer metal and can always suss out when I try to slip her some album I thought was cool for a month 15 years ago or something.

Totally different from most of these bands but I can't quite fit them on the Power Metal thread: Fate's Warning. Been listening to Awaken The Guardian and I like some songs a lot so far. I'm not sure it goes especially far in any direction, mostly sounds like 80s metal to me before I can think of a subgenre. There was a brilliant prog list on youtube years ago that featured their album No Exit, so maybe that is their prog highlight?

"Guardian" is an absolutely stunning song, the rest I'm still chewing on but that song is a justified classic.
