Snowpony, I think. 'Snowplough' is a million times better, though.

Shields has been christened "Bagpuss" by the Primal Scream clan. Anyone know the origin of this? A friend of mine always said that MBV gave off the appearance of being unwashed and slightly smelly.

Julio I gotta say:

free jazz/improv has a small but committed audience. ppl who are into indie go into management.

seems roughly equal to "I will spin it positively for the subculture I like, and negatively for the one I don't" - if indie is "dead," then free jazz has decomposed. I happen to like both so whateveh, but I just wanted to say.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:07 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I like both too (well, not everything, its a case by case basis). I was just playing around.

(but actually, indie is not that much of a 'subculture' anymore whereas 60s jazz and free improv (there is a distinction here btw), despite being older, has more of that, but that doesn't matter)

Rearranging my recording studio, bankrupting record labels, the hypnagogic state, gourmet meals, martial arts, breeding chinchillas, smoking lots of dope, watching lots of TV, easy projects, writing fresh and simple material, and just keeping it simple!

Favorite Music:
Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach, Beatles, Public Enemy, Sonic Youth, Ramones

Favorite TV Shows:
Just about anything, really.

About Me:
You may have heard of my band, My Bloody Valentine. Many critics have written about us in very flowery terms. I don't think I understood what they were saying in those reviews half the time. That guy from Phish loves me guitar sounds though. Do me a favor and buy my Lost in Translation soundtrack. Island Records isn't helping me out much these days. Also kids, don't forget to buy our box set that's coming out in early '04.

Who I Want to Meet:
Great recording effects designers, more film directors, those with good weed, record labels who understand my fondness for expensive food and all of the time I like to spend in and out of the studio. Just remember... I NO LONGER DO REMIXES!

I'll have to ask him about this if I can get him on the phone soon -- supposed to talk for the "Loveless" book I hope to finish in two weeks.

Ohh shit should I start a thread here trawling for questions here for Mr. Shields, or is that redundant?

I tried trawling through here for ideas for the book a year ago and it all just seemed so redundant to type "Loveless" in the search engine, since almost every single thread came up! Hah.

What I REALLY need is help tracking down any of the people who worked on the album (esp. any of the 57 engineers) now that I got my "high quality" (hah) VOIP on and can make free phone calls to the UK...

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:26 (twelve years ago) Permalink

What on earth do you mean, "sit through"? I fucking LOVE Horses. All the more reason.

box.of.rox, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:30 (twelve years ago) Permalink

"Ohh shit should I start a thread here trawling for questions here for Mr. Shields, or is that redundant?" - The most obvious questions seem so sadly unanswerable..

I'm greatly interested in your book, Michael. Do you have a title for it?

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:35 (twelve years ago) Permalink

Ohh sorry to assume everyone knows I'm doing this, hah -- first Mr. Keenan was supposed to do it then he had to bail, and I've taken a few months more than I was supposed to to write the thing -- but somehow that's all fitting given the topic, right? That's what I tell myself anyway!

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:41 (twelve years ago) Permalink

you've spoken to mcgee already?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:44 (twelve years ago) Permalink

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:53 (twelve years ago) Permalink

You mean "piece"? In any case, I do not agree, obviously.

Glad to hear that the 33-1/3 book on Loveless is well under way -- been waiting for that one. Sorry, can't think of any good questions off the top of my head, only idiotic/boring ones.

Wait, here's a geek question. I swear I read somewhere that dude had an instrument specially built just to record "Sometimes." True? And if so, how was it customised? Like he'd even remember at this point. Still I'm curious.

Also, have you talked or will you be talking to Bilinda, Colm, and/or Debbie? I'd be interested to hear what they have to say about the album at this point.

box.of.rox, Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:20 (twelve years ago) Permalink

Kevin Shields and Cat Power are totally gonna get married and sit in an apartment for the rest of their lives getting stoned and watching kung-fu movies in Spanish and eating lentils and duct taping over the windows and bitching about how nobody understands how hard it is for them to make music. It's gonna be like Les Enfants. Starring Alan McGee as Paul.

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 30 April 2005 02:39 (twelve years ago) Permalink

i find it claustrophobic and oppressive, as if a dark cloud would be above me which is just about to disintegrate into pouring rain.

Sounds like a rave review!

Karl Malone, Thursday, 26 October 2017 15:36 (three weeks ago) Permalink

yeah, i mean that sounds right, but at some point the cloud suddenly clears and you are bathed in glorious sunlight, you know?

tylerw, Thursday, 26 October 2017 15:50 (three weeks ago) Permalink

the part 2/3 in where the accompaniment (presumably eno's?) drops out, and then the sound comes back in - goosebumps. so good. also i feel like a doofus because i don't know how to refer to whatever shields is doing (presumably - also i feel like a doofus because i'm just assuming kevin shields is doing the kevin shieldsy-noise and eno is making the eno-noise) - "the sound"? the guitar? waves of guitar noise? fuck. it's good though.

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 October 2017 00:21 (three weeks ago) Permalink

^^ yes especially when the pitch starts to bend up and the noise kicks back in

brimstead, Friday, 27 October 2017 00:34 (three weeks ago) Permalink

maybe that note isn't bending... hard to tell before it gets subsumed back into the wall of noise

calstars, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 16:16 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Less talk?

imago, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 16:19 (two weeks ago) Permalink

Good interview with him. I sort of feel the same way he feels about volume. I've seen lots of shows and lots of loud shows and rarely ever wear earplugs, yet I don't think my years at 42 are bad. In fact, I think they're still pretty good, and I've always wondered if that had something to do with how I listen to music versus how loud I listen to music. Though tbh, I don't listen to music at home or in the car, or on headphones, at high volumes.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:38 (two weeks ago) Permalink

so tour summer 2018 then, and he's "100%" certain (:D) that the new album will be out around then? cool!

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:40 (two weeks ago) Permalink

kevin shields is the friend you tell to show up 3 hours earlier than everyone else

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:40 (two weeks ago) Permalink

The Eno-Shields is EXACTLY how you'd think that would go. Its an 'this is ok and here is why' sorta thing.

― Spencer Chow, Thursday, 26 October 2017 Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

That's beautiful.

Has anyone put together a comp of these one-off tracks and remixes he has put out over the years before their last album?

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:34 (two weeks ago) Permalink

It's interesting that they must have decided not to rebuild the album cross-fades as a live mixdown and instead spent a year making custom edit blocks to do it! Presumably so the timing is as close to the original possible.

Surely they weren't editing the original masters so this analogue cut will be from a 3rd generation(?) tape.
