'she's a woman (and now he is a man)' - husker du

Of all the great Husker Du songs to pick--hell, even all the great ones on that album--I'm baffled. I've always hated that song on the grounds that it's overstated, trite and insincere.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Pixies- Debaser

Micheline Gros-Jean (Micheline), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Pixies, definitely, but the song would have to be "Mr. Grieves".

o. nate (onate), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's a fuggin' gorgeous song, ian. i've rarely heard rock music bristle with so much energy.

angelo (angelo), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

That One Guy I'm Always Prattling On About, "Fuckin' With My Head (Moutain Dew Rock)"

I could replace HD with the Replacements and wonder the same thing about JBR's pick. That's not a dis, but it's just funny because I never liked "I'll Be You" and I've never even heard anyone say anything good about it.

Aaron A., Monday, 18 November 2002 23:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

(If you're gonna pick a Pixies song, why not kill two birds with one stone and take the cover of "Head On?")

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Hearing "Head On" was actually the moment when I realized there was a connected indie "scene," that the bands I liked actually had something to do with one another, and that I knew enough about the whole thing to be excited when one massively cool band covered a massively cool song by another one.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

That song is like a best friend to me (along with the Feelies' "Only Life," which would be my second choice for an OPO '86-'02) when I'm bored/depressed/self-pitying. I'm gonna listen to the song again tonight and I'll see if I can come up with a better answer than "blah blah Westerberg weary romanticism blah blah."

Sebadoh's "Brand New Love"

Rodan "The Everyday World of Bodies"

original bgm, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

not only does 'she's a woman...' get a slagging but 'i'll be you' by the replacements as well?!?! i just don't get it, folks.

angelo (angelo), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

this is a toughy. I might go with "Cool" by Superchunk.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was going to go for a non-Sonic Youth answer but, fuck it, "Shoot" wins this one.

I wonder what Ned's answer is.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

[ha - oops, I read that as 96-present]

The Grifters - "Black Fuel Incinerator"

This is very difficult, so I will go with something from left field.

earlnash, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Spoon – "Fitted Shirt"

Kind of recent, but I think Spoon rivals Wilco as the best band of the past three or four years.

Bruce Urquhart, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ally is so fired. If she can post that I'm calling 'Take It Or Leave It' by The Strokes.

Tom Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Velocity Girl - Forgotten Favorite

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, fine, be that way. I guess I'll have to pick something sensible. Yes by Manics or Hey You! by Mensen.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was actually going to change my answer after I saw your first post.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cause the qn asked about rock, it has to (at least a bit). Cause the question further asked for 'rockist'. we'll make it an album track. "Debaser" was the first thing that came to mind but it's 'taken'; so...

"Guest Informant" by The Fall.

itt I admit listening to Babybird lately. 'Back Together' is like his emo bittersweet symphony. sort of a palatable emo because old man voice, not crybaby
I'm not gonna OPO
