shocking: i'm underweight.

chicago kevin, Friday, 11 April 2008 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I can run a few miles without too much trouble, I just probably consume a few too many calories.

And when I say "27 range," I mean 27.1. Which I only mention because otherwise it looks like I'm trying to look good by calling a 27.9 a 27.

Seem to have misplaced our scales but last time I checked I was under ten stone, which would put me at under 19. May have put on a few pounds since then though.

in order to have a BMI in the "normal" range i would have to weigh 190 lbs. or less which means i would look like i just came from Dachau

Yeah, BMI is weird. Right now I'm about 10 pounds over the weight at which I look best. If I were to lose enough weight to get to the middle of the "normal" range, I'd look disgustingly skinny. Maybe it's because I'm tall?

and what, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:20 (sixteen years ago) link

OKay, so I get that it tells people they're fat when they're not. But does it therefore also tell people they're healthy when they're really too thin?

Upt0eleven, Friday, 11 April 2008 20:20 (sixteen years ago) link

BMI tells me I am skinny so I like it and it is useful to me.

Note: I do not actually look like I have a sub 20
BMI.

Move over BMI, there's a new sheriff in town:

BMI or Body Mass Index, a ratio of weight to height, has long been considered one of the best measures for assessing overall health risk.Getting your BMI into a healthy range used to be considered a top health priority. However, recent research shows that there is a new
sheriff in town: your waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Studies now indicate
that WHtR is a much better measure than BMI for assessing obesity and cardiovascular risk.

Well, if you're 6' tall and have a 24" waist, there should be cause for concern.

WOMEN

• Ratio 35 to 42: Extremely Slim
• Ratio 42 to 46: Healthy
• Ratio 46 to 49: Healthy
• Ratio 49 to 54: Overweight
• Ratio 54 to 58: Seriously Overweight
• Ratio over 58: Highly Obese

MEN
• Ratio less than 35: Abnormally Slim to Underweight
• Ratio 35 to 43: Extremely slim
• Ratio 43 to 46: Healthy
• Ratio 46 to 53: Healthy, Normal Weight
• Ratio 53 to 58: Overweight
• Ratio 58 to 63: Extremely Overweight/Obese
• Ratio over 63: Highly Obese

24.5 = normal (just)

since xmas i now fast walk 4km a day (40 mins), and that has definitely helped me get back down to my usual 75kg as i had put on a couple of red wine enhanced kilos over lockdown.
but seems like the daily walk has helped me find the balance between enjoying wine and exercise.

Reminds me of this:
A man in his 30s with no underlying health conditions was offered a Covid vaccine after an NHS error mistakenly listed him as just 6.2cm in height.

Liam Thorp was told he qualified for the jab because his measurements gave him a body mass index of 28,000.
