er, "though".

still, it does feel like the show needs to come to an end, doesn't it?

i liked last night a lot more than anything from last season, which was way way more "D" than "C".

this week's episode as excellent.

Also, they're moving it back to SUndays, since apparently no-one is watching it this year

Re-reading the earlier parts of the thread reminded me of how awful last season really was (and how much better this season is - and it seems to be getting even better).
The art school stuff was often preposterous - Claire's infatuation with Mena Suvari was ridiculous. Claire seems to be 3 or 4 different characters, depending on who wrote the episode.

But, yeah, this week's was great. The scene between Billy and George on the front stoop was somehow really moving.

Also, I can't get over my sudden fixation with Ileana Douglas after her cameo 2 eps ago. Jesus. So hot.

this season has been very good. there isn't much left of it though and I'm worried about what they're going to do with Nate and Maggie, that seems very rushed. She's cute and nice though.

Does anyone know whats happening with the availability of downloadable season 5 episodes? Apparently numerous fake and/or corrupted versions of the first few episodes have been circulating to try to prevent people from downloading and now I can't seem to find episode 7 anywhere, even though it originally aired on Sunday.

I would watch it on HBO if I could, of course.

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:35 (eighteen years ago) link

it seems that no-one is watching it this season, you'd think hbo would be happy people are bothering at all....although they'll undoubtedly blame lack of viewers on the internet (and not their complete lack of publicity about this season)

I don't know, I think the quality has actually been fairly consistent from season 3 onward, aside from a few duds. I'm always going to be partial to the mid-period of this show.

But yeah, "Singing For Our Lives" is an instant classic. I'm excited to see how the final four are going to go down. Should be pretty intense.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I really really really disagree with people about Claire. I think half the point of the character is that she kinda flits around in search of herself, and the frustration comes from when she retreats back to acting like a bratty self-involved kid after showing herself to be a pretty amazing adult when she wants to be. I find it hard to imagine that none of you have ever met people like that!

The storyline with Mena Suvari was pretty right on and realistic, esp. when Claire had to realize that she just couldn't commit to anything beyond a surface flirtation with bisexuality.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean, really, if any of you have been to art school in the past ten years, I can't imagine how you'd think the stuff there was even remotely "preposterous." Some bits were exaggerated for dramatic effect, but they nailed so many details and character types, I find it amazing that the entire writing staff are not art school graduates.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 1 August 2005 11:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw it... just when Six Feet Under was getting REALLY FUN again to watch, they go and throw an emotional monkeywrench in there and now I fear it will be unbearably depressing till the end of season and well into the next. It's always been an emotional trainwreck, but it was somehow light enough to be hilarious this whole season. That's the reason this season has been so great.

are you new to the show?

Not really, I didn't watch it for one season and I didn't really like it until this season. Lots of shows have drama and bad shit happen, like Desperate Housewives for instance, but this one had a very obvious method of creating a comfortable situation and then destroying it and creating something new out of it.

Hopefully there will be many more episodes of this last season.

Still the most frustrating show on television - for every good moment or scene, there's drawn-out, stilted (often pseudo-surreal) dialogue. The mother is the worst for this - Nate and Claire (and their cadres) are usually the only characters that resemble actual people. The rest just seems very white-elephant to me.

SPOILERS FOLLOW

I liked this episode, but my aggravation with Nate has reached such an insane high that I was almost glad he died. Breaking up with your pregnant wife from your hospital bed, with your daughter in the room, right after she's spent the entire night in the hospital worrying about whether or not you'd be OK = instant fucking douchebag classic. So, yeah, I can't say I was exactly mourning his departure.

I do love Claire & David this season, tho.

Bullshit. I don't know who you know, but I assure you that there are most certainly a lot of people like Ruth and David and Rico in this world. Fuck, I relate to David quite a bit. God, what a horrifying world if everyone was as self-centered and narcissistic as Claire and Nate!

LOCKER ROOM TOWEL FIGHT: THE BLINDING OF LARRY DRISCOLL (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 03:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I genuinely cannot comprehend how a frustrated woman who had been cautious about every little thing in her life for over 60 years suddenly deciding to be impulsive and marrying the first good man who comes along without knowing him very well and having that totally backfire when she finds out about his horrible secret and then ending up back where she started - taking care of another person 24/7 - is "wacky" or at all unrealistic. Ruth's storyline is very simple - she's a codependent person who is trying to find a path in which she is not subserviant to a man, but also fighting her impulse to do just that. That's why this last episode was such a big deal for her - she had the strength to tell Hiram to fuck off, and came to the realization that all the men in her life were all kind of ridiculous and the same, even Nathanial.

Please, watch the show in CONTEXT before you start saying that it's ridiculous.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:51 (eighteen years ago) link

as far as I'm concerned it's never gonna get as good as when David smoked crack

they referenced this in the last episode!

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Seriously, please give me an example of anything "wacky" that Ruth has done aside from her weird quasi-affair with Arthur.

In seasons four and five she has:

Adjusted to married life with George, slowly realizing that she made a horrible mistake as his behavior became gradually more insensitive and erratic. She kept trying to reach out to him and learn more about his family and past, but he kept pushing her away. He eventually slips into full-on paranoid schizophrenia, and he gets the the electroshock therapy, and she takes care of him. Her resentment for being put in the situation of being responsible for him grows and grows until their relationship totally collapses and she leaves him. (In the meantime her relationship with Claire is in bad shape, mainly because Ruth is terrified that she will make some of the same mistakes that she has.)

Following the break up, she finds out that George already has a new fiance and she tries to tell that woman the truth about George. She kinda freaks out, but why the hell not? She bonds with her sister and her female friends, but takes the whole "let's form a commune for women!" thing too seriously. She tries to go out and date and mingle at a party, but feels old and silly and out of place and humiliates herself. She decides to revisit Hiram, but that goes badly.

Wacky?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think the show is incredibly realistic. But, maybe some of us live more sheltered lives than others?

nate's whole "man, i am so fucking wise and in touch"

He was being honest with his feelings. You must be the most uptight motherfucker around.

well, at least he died the way he lived. being a selfish, smug asshole.

And Nate a selfish asshole? Take a look at who he's been with. They were all much worse, including Brenda. I looked at my gf when Nate told Brenda he was done with her and we both went, "Yay!" with big smiles on our faces.

He Who Can Not Be Named, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 13:33 (eighteen years ago) link

I looked at my gf when Nate told Brenda he was done with her and we both went, "Yay!" with big smiles on our faces.

I don't disagree that Brenda was awful, but I think my aggravation with Nate stems from the way he goes about things. I feel like he has a pattern of getting something he thinks will make him happy, then becoming almost immediately dissatisfied with that one thing and convincing himself something better is out there without ever trying to work to improve the situation he's in. His pattern is that when things get tough, he bolts. I don't get the sense that his character has any understanding of the idea that life is difficult, relationships take work, and the godlike "peace" ideal isn't something you discover, it's something you work to create.

He gave his marriage all of 1.5 episodes before he decided it wasn't working out, and the only reason he came to that conclusion was because he decided that if only he was with Maggie, then surely he would be happy. I get aggravated because I know so many 'Nate's -- always convinced that their unhappiness is caused by someone else, always bailing at the first sign of trouble, and always leaping with their full soul at the next shiny thing they're convinced is going to make them happy -- whether it's marriage, or Quakerism, or living on an organic food commune.

I can't determine if this is intentional -- if the character is deliberately written this way -- or if everyone involved with the show is also this myopic, onanistic and self-centered.

sixteen years pass...

Whenever you get tired of the principals (something I could say of almost everyone at one point or another except maybe David), there's always Patricia Clarkson, Kathy Bates, Joanna Cassidy, and Catherine O'Hara having the time of their lives.

Some debate over the art-school stuff above. For me, the worst--it's a parody of a parody, a meta-parody of how movies fun of art school. Much of it is spouted by Olivier: worse even than the cocktail chatter in Woody Allen's Manhattan. (If it's accurate, so be it--doesn't make it any less horrifying, just makes me glad I never went to art school.)

The first time I watched it through I was studying for a mixed arts-style undergraduate degree and the art school stuff - Claire and Russell's self-important disaffectedness, Jimmy's on-the-nose pseudo-celebrity, the cocaine photo exhibition...that all felt very otm. Hideous, but accurate.
