My housemates have this problem, sometimes, but never late at night. It's just him in the room next door only ever listens to Broken Wings, Springsteen, and David fucking Gray...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 9 November 2002 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Not cuntist at all. Totally deserved. But make sure that your room's door has a LOCK on it or you may find stereo and timer mysteriously damaged...

This why you should not piss off smart people.

My brother, while at Columbia, had a problem with his dormmate's stereo. (In Columbia, they put the students in these weird dorms with suites, supposed to mimick actual apartments... yeah, where the fuck in Manhattan are you going to find apartments that big?) Then he discovered that one wall socket outlet in his room was hooked up to their circuit breaker, while the others were on his own circuit. So he built this electrical device which he hooked up to the rogue socket which had the sole purpose of overloading the system and tripping the circuit breaker. Every time their stereo was too loud, he turned his evil machine on. The suitemates learned through Pavlovian reinforcement not to play their stereos too loud, as they thought it was the stereo tripping the circuit breakers. Mwah hah hah, even the Ivy League is full of stupid cunts.

kate, Saturday, 9 November 2002 17:27 (sixteen years ago) link

D'oh! TYPE = TYPO!!!

kate, Saturday, 9 November 2002 17:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I've done that Kate, but my whole room and the lights go off, and it only affects the room next door, which isn't the worst.

Do I have to have asked them to turn it down first?

Graham (graham), Saturday, 9 November 2002 17:40 (sixteen years ago) link

The guy that lives in the flat below me snores so loudly that I can't get to sleep. There's nothing quite as annoying as being prevented from sleeping by someone who is having no trouble in sleeping. I tried earplugs and having the radio on, but no joy, so I've had to swap my bedroom and living room.

They also like to have music on loud enough for them to hear it in the garden. I wouldn't mind if it was decent music but dinner jazz really is very, very vile.

They are all cunts.

Alfie (Alfie), Saturday, 9 November 2002 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Erm, as to the asking, one-time asking is OK. Like, the first time they are too loud, speak to them and clearly establish what the parameters of your noise-tolerance are.

If you haven't asked AT ALL, yes, it's cuntist. If you've asked repeatedly and had them simply ignore your requests and/or repeat the noise instrusions, then DESTROY SHOWING EXTREME PREJUDICE.

My next door neighbors used to be fine, but then they had a baby and they let it cry all of the time. It's like they just leave it there to cry.

As if that wasn't bad enough, then they moved in their entire extended family! I think there's probably 8-10 people in a two bedroom apartment. There's just talking and yelling in the hallway all hours of the day and night, people coming and going, etc. The worst part of all is last night, I could hear the little girl (about 10, not the baby) living there just screaming and crying for a disturbing period of time. I have no idea what's going on in there, all I know is that I'll be glad to be out of here when the lease is up in April.

I just remembered when we lived in a flat in Leicester. A big biker guy moved in downstairs, all dirty leather and long greasy hair and bikes. Soon after he asked us to the party he was having that saturday night. We anticipated Iron Maiden until the small hours with some trepidation. As it went, it was all over by about half ten, and I think the music I was playing (at what I called normal volume) was a good deal louder than theirs.

Also, I had always wondered until that period in my life who it was who collected those terrible plates with drawings of old cottages and puppies on (always by someone like 'Best Puppies On Plate Painter Nominee 1987'), that you see advertised in the Radio Times. The demographic turned out to be 28 year old 6'3" bikers. I hadn't guessed.

Next time your neigbors are playing music too loud, get em back. Put on Earth 2 as loud as possible with the CD on repeat mode before you leave the house for a few days......

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 9 November 2002 22:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Our neighbours were like thee arguing couple in "father Ted". They would be all nice & lovey-dovey in publick, but would have screaming rows @ 3am. I banged on the wall & called them mother fukcers more than once. They had this epic row, with doors slamming, pots smashing, screaming, stuff getting thrown, the whole works. They even went ouside for a while and shouted abuse at each other. When a neighbour tried to intervene, the man accused the neighbour ov fukcing his wife. it went on from just after midnight till four in the morning. Then they got started again at 7am. I banged on the wall with a big block ov wood, and called them selfish motherfukcers who deserved to die. Our little son was crying at the noise, it was awful. two weeks later they moved out, thank fukc, and relocated to a house about 12 doors down the street. We can't hear them anymore. I feel sorry for their new neighbours, but we're mostly releived that we don't have to listen to them anymore. sometimes Jill sees one or both of them out on the street, and they act all embarrased - refusing to meet her eye, crossing the road etc. Stupid, STUPID people. the person who moved in in their place is this single womyn who is very very quiet. Long may this continue.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 11:45 (sixteen years ago) link

A couple of weeks after I moved into my last flat my friend and I decided to have girlie night in, a bottle of wine, chocolate cake all-men-are-bastards type evening. About midnight all hell broke loose next door, banging, screaming, loads strange thumping noises - it then moved out into the close, there were crashing noises and shouting then suddenly dead quiet. We went to the front door in our night-shirts, put on the chain and peeked out to be confronted with a close covered in broken crockery and burning newspapers and the burred from next door advancing towards us at high speed shouting obscenities. Not the kind of welcome you need in your first flat you've ever lived alone in!
She got worse over the years, threatening physical violence against me for closing my front door too loudly (I think she just couldn't find anything else to complain about) emptying rubbish on my doorstep and pouring beer through my letter box. Weirdo freak, I held out for 5 years, her sort don't scare me, but I'm glad I'm gone and I'll never live in a close again!

It's midnight, and suddenly I hear the muffled but unmistakable sound of the bassline to EMF's "Unbelievable" playing above my head. I hate you, upstairs neighbor! I hate the fact that you apparently don't have a job and never go to bed! How the fuck do you manage to get up and have your kids jumping on my ceiling at five o'clock every morning when I can still hear your TV blaring at one o'clock at night?! I hate your shitty taste in trance music and your fucking TV! I hate the fact that the "reasonable" compromise that we seem to have settled on after five months of cohabitation still leaves me wanting to go upstairs and throw your subwoofer and TV out your window and onto your fucking pickup truck with the fucking car alarm that it took you three months to figure out how to stop from going off every hour, morning, noon, and night! Gah, fuck! I hate the fact that my lease isn't up for another three months! I'm never living under another person's floor again!

Our neighbours kept me up 'til 6 AM last night playing the bloody awful Kaiser Chiefs and other random guitar crap as they came down off what must have been a big night o' pills.

I knocked on the door at 3:30 AM and politely asked them to turn it down, which they did...slightly. I know they were smashed and your volume judgement tends goes out the window, but that's not much comfort when you're tossing and turning at 5 AM. We've always tried to be super quiet if we come back late from a club, and that's always at weekends and not on a work night. (we're all 9-5 Mon-Fri types)

So - I just loved facing my last day of work on two hours of sleep. Not all of us have finished for the chrismas break...

But hey, they didn't get a lie in. My boyfriend buzzed their intercom on the way out to work, and I played a nice selection of party hip hop (Edan, Mos Def) before I left. I heard signs of life as I was leaving, ha!

lil yawne (harbl), Monday, 13 October 2008 10:36 (ten years ago) link

i used to be able to hear my stinky old neighbour pissing and it truly repulsed me more than anything else about inhabiting a block of flats, even more than his unbearably loud sex noises with equally noisy lady-friends. And that's saying something. He's moved out now though (yay) and i can't hear anything my new neighbour does.

so a small group of kids has taken to throwing parties randomly in the house next to me. it's currently in the final stages of being renovated so, i'm assuming they're just sneaking in around midnight or so, setting up and cranking their music until 4am.

the first time was a friday night and i didn't get too bent out of shape about it.
they were at it again last night starting from about 1am and i was none too impressed. when i called the cops they mentioned there'd already been a bunch of complaints, yet no cops ever bothered showing up.

i managed to pass out on my couch (where it's quieter) around 3:30-45 or so. but i'm trying to formulate a game plan for what to do next time this happens.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:19 (ten years ago) link

Why dont you find out who owns/is renovating the building and tell them shitty little squatter techno brats are partying in their house every night? Cops might be complacent but there's nothin more righteous than a yuppie property owner with paranoia about land values.

Trayce, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:37 (ten years ago) link

it's happened twice in the last two weeks - so it's not like i can guarantee they'll be there doing their thing on any given day. and i'm assuming the workers must have figured out what's happening - or that something is happening.

i think maybe if they do it on a weekend again and i'm sitting around doing sfa i might just join them (the music was actually REM and Bloc Party and that sort of thing - no techno!), and possibly slash dude's tires on my way in.

But the loud chatter always continues into the early hours - no matter how cold the outdoor conditions are. And they seem powerless to ban him, because he keeps returning and he is abysmal. I'm not a curtain twitching type, but my bedroom window is almost adjacent with their back door because of the hill our house was built on, and this show never seems to end:(

My neighbors aren't noisy but they leave a black and white pit mix outside 24/7 that can be. She's also started breaking out from the lack of attention into my backyard or into the front yards and tearing up my trash.

Talking to them has been pointless and it seemingly never happens when I can call animal control, so I've started just throwing the trash in their yard.

night sun 29th July

door being slammed in what can only be described as intentionally violent manner such that sound carried loudly through to other apartments loudly enough to prevent any chance of sleep.

repeated at intervals of c.5 mins from approx 23.50 through 01.00

i can only surmise intentional and vexatious due to frequency, the regular intervals between and the violence of the slamming (you could literally hear the run-up on each occasion).

unsure whether they were seeking to aggravate or provoke an adjacent neighbour, ourselves or genuinely undergoing a traumatic personal event (no noise of conversation or of any other kind throughout period save for the doors, no signs of others in apt, etc)
