Today's film in Denmark is The Second Game, the film Corneliu Porumboiu made, consisting of a vhs-copy of a tv-game from 88 with him and his dad talking on top of it. That's arty. Also, it's pretty fun for fans of Porumboiu.

New collection here looks choice:

https://mubi.com/en/us/collections/spectacle-everyday

Beloved by Latin American audiences—and renowned auteurs such as Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro—the Golden Age of Mexican cinema is filled with treasures beyond a cinephile’s wildest dreams. Ushering in a monumentally prolific era of master filmmakers and unforgettable screen stars, these exquisite tales ingeniously reimagine the visual aesthetics of classical Hollywood through the distinctive lens of local culture and history. Pressing issues such as wealth inequality and gender roles are among their primary concerns, yet many of the most notable films from this period also have a penchant for the surreal, the fantastical, and the pleasurably strange. Immortalized on screen are not only political revolutionaries but also luchadores, witches, superheroes, and more.

Here, fiery passions can lead to more than a clandestine love affair; they can result in murder or villainous plans for world domination! With melodrama as the key mode of expression, the mirror of everyday realism is shattered, revealing the volatile depths of human desire. Curated in partnership with the Locarno Festival, this selection delivers a taste of their exceptional retrospective of Mexican film production, which includes never-before-seen works. Erasing the simplistic binary between so-called highbrow and lowbrow entertainment, these rediscovered gems, which span three decades, showcase the potency of popular cinema as a vessel for both social commentary and genre delights.

Five up now and hopefully more to follow.

The Original Human Breadbox (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:30 (eight months ago) link

it's sort of like The Third Man in its plot structure, but no snappy dialogue or safe characters and more like a mundane nightmare where you you sense there is a murky undercurrent of bad shit happening way scarier than the obvious ordinary everyday evil you see glimpses of and try to normalise.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 10 August 2023 23:30 (eight months ago) link

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Monday, 18 September 2023 19:21 (seven months ago) link

yes, they sent a circular to me via email a couple weeks ago suggesting there wouldn't be a daily movie anymore. not sure if that's impacted the number of overall films added, I've not really been super active on it recently

yo la dieng-o (fionnland), Monday, 18 September 2023 19:56 (seven months ago) link

just came to ask about that. I really preferred the old structure - gave you a reason to check in every day plus provided some impetus to watch things which were due to drop off (and presumably helped them license some films - on a short term basis - they may otherwise struggle to.)

i really enjoyed Topology of Sirens - kind of Reichardt-y (very similar color palette and pace to Showing Up, but without the emotional core or character development), lots of experimental music (Sarah Davachi and Matchess act and perform in the movie), sometimes has the vibes of those videos where people play their expensive synthesizers in a very curated room with lots of plants, but it's also a mystery.
