Sociable animals, a walrus will swim to aid another memeber of the colony when in danger, instead of fleeing. This has made them particularly vulnerable to hunters and current estimates put the total population in the wild at less than 20,000.

read an amazing book earlier this year on the 'race for the north pole' that i cant remember the title of - all those doomed expeditions starving to death in the snow - but the history of (western) arctic exploration is crazy fascinating.

currently reading abt arctic ecology and its super interesting but sort of infuraiting all these rad amazing animals descriptions and then 'and while no longer threatened with extinction [animal x]'s population still remains at historically low levels'. the only exceptions are the ones that we actually did manage to wipe out completely...
