can anyone seriously recommend getting a touch as a gaming platform? is it worth the cash in the same way as a ds?

― a pun based on a popular ilx meme (forksclovetofu), Monday, 8 November 2010 15:11 (4 days ago)

I've got some mates who are game developers and one who's a journalist (edits Kill Screen magazine) and nearly all of them rave about the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad as a boundary pushing gaming platform.

There also definitely seems to be more & more larger games arriving on the platform too. Galaxy of Fire 2 for instance provides at least 10 hours of gameplay and much much more if you're happy to just explore the universe in between doing the main story missions

Do posts about iPad games go here or is there a separate thread for them?

hm. maybe the kind of thing i invest in when my ipod dies.

Jenny I would like to hear about yr iPad games

swagl (dayo), Friday, 12 November 2010 16:31 (thirteen years ago) link

OK! I have been playing Puzzle Quest in the iPad and that is pretty much the perfect platform for that game. Spider is better on the iPad, too, although I find it to be kind of boring. I could be missing something.

And Galaxy of Fire 2 looks like it will be awesome for the iPad. As soon as they release an HD version, I'm all over it.

phantoms from a world gone by speak again the immortal tale: (Jenny), Friday, 12 November 2010 16:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I refuse to play a game on my iPad unless it's in HD =\

swagl (dayo), Friday, 12 November 2010 16:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Definitely. Trying to play non-optimized games on the iPad is depressing. Puzzle Quest looks better on the iPad than it did on the DS. Easier to play, too, but I always has trouble w/ the stylus bc I type all day for a living and am always on the verge of a tendinitis aggravation.

Chopper 2 is HD on iPad and pretty well put together. You can use a touch or iPhone as a Bluetooth/wifi controller and hook the iPad up to a tv. Osmos is also HD and very relaxing. Though, paraphrasing someone upthread, it plays like you're fertilizing an egg. DoDonPachiR isn't HD but plays better on iPad. Mind, it's full-on Japanese style, seizure inducing awesomeness.

puzzle quest on iphone is ass

irritable bol syndrome (s1ocki), Friday, 12 November 2010 22:40 (thirteen years ago) link

^^^ massive ultra uber-ass. it really is awesome on iPad though.

I keep trying to decide if it is worth it for me to get a Touch (or an iPad?) so I can play iPhone games. I really don't want the phone part of the iPhone, but I'm jealous of all the games I know I would love to be playing.

Puzzle Quest/IPhone gets insanely boring somewhere around the halfway mark.

I got an iPad and Game Dev Story and that baseball game.

I looked up and whoops, there went my evening!

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Friday, 19 November 2010 08:36 (thirteen years ago) link

if iPad were NES, 9 Innings, GameDevStory and maybe Drop7(still haven't played it) would be the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt pack-in

T-Rex's erotic imagination (Z S), Friday, 19 November 2010 13:06 (thirteen years ago) link

does 9 innings translate to non-american fun?

hoy orbison (a hoy hoy), Friday, 19 November 2010 13:21 (thirteen years ago) link

and what if you don't give two shits about baseball? still fun?

^my question also

bought Zen Bound after reading a lot about it but so far I'm struggling to see the attraction (I guess I'm not really looking for Zen wisdom when playing on my iphone in the metro)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 19 November 2010 15:45 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost... no its not.

sofatruck, Friday, 19 November 2010 15:49 (thirteen years ago) link

It's definitely a baseball game, but with a very fun presentation style, and good touch controls.

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Friday, 19 November 2010 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i would not advise 9 Innings for non-baseball fans... Angry Birds or Cut The Rope are much better games than 9 Innings but 9 Innings appeals to my awful baseball addiction.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Friday, 19 November 2010 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Angry Birds has been awfully laggy since the Game Centre integration.

does everyone have minigore? it's free atm, i don't know how often that is the case. anyway, it's the only action-based game i've played on this thing (my 3g phone) that both controls well and compels me to play regularly

aw mini gore!

shirley summistake (s1ocki), Friday, 19 November 2010 23:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I just grabbed mini gore a few days ago and i dig it so far!

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Saturday, 20 November 2010 01:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, the Zen Bound games aren't really suited for train environments. They're more for playing alone at home if you need to unwind after a stressful day at work.

groovypanda, Saturday, 20 November 2010 14:32 (thirteen years ago) link

unwind

HIYOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Rage HD is a bit shit really, looks gorgeous but there's no game there. Galaxy On Fire 2 is soaking up increasing amounts of my time, the first few hours are quite annoyingly hard but once you get a bigger ship and a couple of upgrades it all gets a lot more fun.

Anyone else playing Words With Friends? It's fun but these ransoms always quit whenever I bingo..

The updates for DoodleGods have been cutely amusing fun. latest one was a kind of RPG theme pack, with wizards and dragons and raiding parties saving a princess and whatnot.

And this one time, on Bandcamp... (Trayce), Saturday, 27 November 2010 00:37 (thirteen years ago) link

JUST SAYIN.

Also just picked up some apparently highly acclaimed 16-bit throwback RPG called Zenonia for $0.99 (on sale til Monday!), have not tried it yet.

Someone plz notify me immediately if Game Dev Story drops below $4.

Stevie D(eux), Sunday, 28 November 2010 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Got Zenonia last week when it was free but also haven't played it yet.

If you get the Bargain Bin app you can set notifications for when apps fall below a price of your choosing.
