I should actually be explicit here and say that I don't think the bottle opener is like OMG HATEFUL RACIST or anything -- it's just kind of tacky and lame and dumb-headed.

Once upon a time there was a famous black American athelete named Patrick Ewing who had large lips and huge nostrils, and I'd be willing to bet that at some point some artist was working on a caricature of him and then stopped and thought "hey, this image just so happens to kinda resemble a lot of 'hilarious' (and please note totally 'affectionate') images of Africans in this country, so I guess I'll try a new angle here that maybe doesn't" -- that level of tact and basic historical awareness is, I think, all anyone is asking for here. Given the long history of the British and Americans making goofy figurines of those amusing funny-looking folks from other places in the world, I'd like to think that most people would find the bottle opener at least a LITTLE off-putting.

Further to that, there's the thing I was kind of hinting at with the World Cup squad jokes upthread, which is that in my personal experience, I can't say I've noticed any equivalent treatments of athletes (white or black, really) in such exaggerated figurines, and certainly not in figurines intended to serve any purpose other than sitting there and bobbling their heads, and so there actually IS some question in my mind about whether someone would do anything similar with a big-toothed European player. (Like I said, I have yet to see a postbox painted as Wayne Rooney or the Beckham's Bum Bottle Opener.) But that's kind of a side issue.
