ha apocalypse horses. How do i get them back? i'm now left with a fucking undead horse which is shit to drive.

this is pretty good though, the head shot restriction makes this one a lot tougher. dead eye is almost essential now.

ha, was walking along the raised train track, at the far north, thought i was pretty much safe from any roaming zombies but then a bolter slowly rose upwards throught the track. a bug but it looked quite frightening.

downloaded this, played it for five minutes, got frustrated because I've been playing Assassin's Creed 2 so I've forgotten all the RDR controls and I kept opening up the weapon wheel instead of swinging the torch

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 8 November 2010 13:57 (thirteen years ago) link

finished this yesterday. i mean, i can still go save and re-save towns, but probably won't. by the end i definitely had more ammo + cool weapons than i knew what to do with.

I do not understand why they put something like that in a game and don't give you a choice about your actions. What does it benefit to lay a bummer like that on you right at the start of the game?

antexit, Monday, 22 November 2010 01:00 (thirteen years ago) link

watched darksydephil's playthrough of the Undead game, funny as always but the fucker used Casual aiming which meant every auto aim was an instant head shot. this game is sooo different when you have to manually aim, for the better.

F-Unit (Ste), Monday, 29 November 2010 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i only realised that right at the end of the game proper. changed it for the zombies, now i'm manual for life (or undeath).

saw that one coming, i mean every other sidequest in RDR is the setup for a sad trombone joke (the dude picking flowers for his dead wife, the flying machine guy, etc.). but yeah, i felt for that sasquatch and gave some serious thought as to whether it would be more humane to kill him or not. :/

one month passes...

I liked how right towards the end you got a few mundane farm related missions again, herding cattle and such.

Yeah, I beat Dutch and that corny song came on and the caption "Ride home to see your family." lit up. I was all, here we go, and then, scaring crows from the silo and shooting wolves.

I welcomed the real end as long as it meant I wouldn't have to follow Rufus around no mo'.

Anyway, last 2010 resolution completed.

four months pass...

I just returned to this. I was an idiot for quitting when I did cause man, I love that cattle-herding shit. I went back and played that part over and over til I got all 15 home. BUT DID I GET SOME KIND OF SPECIAL CUT-SCENE, DID I FUCK. ARRRRRRGH.

I released my anger on some goddamn motherfucking crows. Then I fucked the hell out of my computer wife. I assume.

revisited this also. really enjoying it again, somehow glad that i stopped playing it back when it start to feel tedious. Now its fresh again, and still have new plot parts to see.

I managed to kill the rare 'Jackalope', wondered what the fuck it was at first.

played liar's dice irl the other night, now i want to go back and play it in RDR since i totally did not get it at the time.

adult music person (Jordan), Monday, 16 May 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

is this liars dice?

everyone rolls dice
you guess/bet how many instances of a certain number have appeared, in total around the table
people raise etc on your guess (or make new guesses? dunno)
you lose a dice if you're wrong
lose completely if you lose all the dice
that's it!

^^^ actually between Sony being dicks and their PSN problems, 360 reliability, and the Wii having no games that I want to play, my wallet is glad that I sat out this console generation.

yup that's liar's dice. the only part i didn't get was that if someone bets that there are four of something (say twos) on the table, you have to raise and say that there are five twos or six threes (or higher). i don't know, i'm sure i skipped the tutorials and pressed random buttons.

you should totally do it

your wallet may be glad but this console generation is the best one i remember between fallout, bioshock, mass effect...

Mordy, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 16:19 (twelve years ago) link

getting into a 'generation' on the late side is great, cos you have a ton of games to get to at used prices. i think i bought a ps2 right about when the 360 was coming out!

goole, Tuesday, 17 May 2011 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I nearly re-bought a PS2 instead of buying a PS3. Still kind of wish I had. I think I'd rather play Okami or FFXII than anything I've played on the PS3 (with the exception of Fallout 3).

three weeks pass...

Finally finished this today. HATED all the stupid ranching stuff at the end, but the last shootout is fun. Playing through undead now. It's hard.

Jeff, Friday, 21 October 2011 01:53 (twelve years ago) link

yeah undead is a lot harder, but its incredibly easy if you have full auto aim on. i think you can have it on an auto aim that just targets the body, which is acceptable as only head shots win here.

Summer Slam! (Ste), Friday, 21 October 2011 09:33 (twelve years ago) link

I just started this, again. It crashed on my old PS3 and that ultimately led to the console dying so I was a bit wary about putting the same disc into the new one. Seems to be ok so far - I pissed around shooting rabbits and coyotes with Bonnie then she dropped me in town with no fucking money to do anything and told me to take the stage home. Turns out you need money for the stage so I got pissed off and stole it then ended up having to shoot and kill four guys who chased after me.

I'm doing it wrong, aren't I?

one year passes...

Tried the online version this weekend. Started off with a burro instead of a horse. Players score points by killing other players. Learned that fast when I walked up to what I thought was a mission and it turned out to be another player who wheeled that one off pretty fast.

Nothing seemed to be working right. I saw two dots on the map representing other players who weren't moving, so I figure, well, points are points. I get to where they are by MacFarlane's Farm and ... there's no one there. I'm standing on top of the blips and I'm alone, out standing in the field. Later I read up on the glitches, and they're more bizarre than the GTA ones -- "If you jump on the outhouse from behind and keep jumping, you will jump hundreds of feet into the sky (you will die when you fall though." "If you shoot all the people stuck in the ground at the train station, you can get unlimited XP points."

"People stuck in the ground...?" I looked for them, but didn't find any. I did find a good old-fashioned gunfight. Everyone's icon was huge though, and you'd see this neon pink sheriff's star hunkering down in a bush at dusk. Really, really weird.

I'd hit ○ on the controller and my character would point and mutter something mean in Spanish. That was kinda fun to do, standing around the chickens.

Hopefully, RDR2 will be a completely separate story from the first one, possibly set earlier in the true Wild West days with Native Americans etc.

painfully alive in a drugged and dying culture (DavidM), Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:16 (ten years ago) link

We thought the cities in Red Dead Redemption, and Blackwater in particular, were a little disappointing. Beyond the cinema screens, brothels and stores, there wasn’t much to entertain, forcing you to spend the majority of your time in the desert on horseback.

And GTAV only gives you cinema screens, clothing stores, haircuts and mod shops, forcing you to spend the majority of your time in the streets driving a car. At least in RDR, you could play poker.

(Not complaining about GTAV, not complaining about spending my time in the desert on horseback.)

Through the most part of Red Dead Redemption you are building up an image of Blackwater as a bustling city that claims to be on the fringe of modernisation, but in reality hardly lived up to our expectations.

Kinda thought this reveal was the point. You hear so much about Blackwater during the game and then you get there and it's ... Springfield USA. Just like it would've been 100 years ago.

pplains, Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:54 (ten years ago) link

Personally I hope it's set in the 20th century. One thng the first game did so well was explore the tension between decentralized, autonomous regional political entities and the looming urban, technologized, bureaucratized, federalist America of the 20th century..

fields of salmon, Sunday, 13 April 2014 17:57 (ten years ago) link

People shouldn't give Blackwater a hard time. It had suburbs!
