oh yeah, duh, should have been clearer. mother of fire is a minneapolis band that has a vague oneida-like quality buried somewhere in their sound. connection is tangential at best, and i'm probably the only one who'd make it. offered in response to staggerlee's request.

love this locked groove stuff as well and definitely check out circle! prospekt, sunrise, and tower are my faves. but don't start with tower - it's more on a terry riley tip.
anyway, there's tons of circle material out there and most of it is worthwhile.
best experienced live, tho.
loop might do the trick too. a gilded eternity is killer.

the recent no balls s/t lp (from 2009, I think?) hit a lot of these same buttons for me. but with more scuzz.

No, that's the first Cave release. They don't have anything new right now. There may be some copies of a split cassette with Skarekrau Radio with a live set recorded by Grady Runyan at his record store in Sacramento in 2009.

I mean, it is, sure. but when I listen, "don't stop playing this riff, I love this riff" often pops into my head. and of course, they never do. not until the song has totally decayed.
really hits that loop sweet spot for me but coming from a way more primitive angle.
ymmv, of course.
― original bgm, Thursday, 4 November 2010 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link
really, stopping a killer riff prematurely is unforgivable.
― original bgm, Thursday, 4 November 2010 19:53 (thirteen years ago) link
I mean, how much better would this song be if the amon duul 2 boys really took their time with the riff that appears 1:13 into this track?

guess I have to check out cave, huh? reflexively wrote them off as 3rd tier stuff for reasons I can't remember. (possibly because they have an album named "jamz")
parson sound seconded in a big way.

aw thx!alan, some excellent cave stuff to try out over here: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/CAVE/they're still far and away the best live band i've seen in 2010. probably in 2009, 2008, 2007, too.

Sorry for derailing your thread, Oneida! Thanks for the recos, everyone. Listening to Harmonia as I type; had forgotten they existed. Really good but a little mellow for my mood right now.
I take it Cave are a different band than these guys? :) Got Hunt Like Devil waiting for me; also, Space Mantra and Circle's Sunrise.
Stopped following the Krautrock listening club after the 1-2 punch of Amon Duul II and Walter Wegmuller, neither of which I could stand in the slightest. (did like La Dusseldorf alright, tho.) Maybe I should get back on the bandwagon.
Anyone listening to any Sun Araw? Seems like if you like Amon Duul II's noodliness and a bit of space-rock you'll dig it. It's mostly soloing over slow deep beats and a chaotic backdrop of echoey distorted guitars & keys. Very trancey & psychedelic. The one I listen to most is Heavy Deeds.
Since I instantly and completely derailed this thread from Oneida to all this other stuff, is it possible for a mod to snip the whole conversation into a new thread from that point? Up to now this is the best all-arounder thread for Oneida & I don't want to have fucked it over. Also, anyone looking for a convo around repetitive guitar-rock bands is more than likely to miss it here.

^ in my post above, every time I mention Amon Duul II, substitute Ash Ra Tempel, since apparently that's what I was referring to. I guess now I haven't heard AD (I or II). Would i like them? Are they riffy?

oh hell yes. have mentioned them in a number of threads recently (insisting, for example, that they are "chillwave" just so i can foist them there). heavy deeds is epic, but i think on patrol is my favorite. the longer songs and open spaces make it so easy to get lost in. plus nice beats.

wouldn't worry about it. in the long run, this'll just be a minor detour, and probably a useful one to fans.

On the subject of Oneida. The inattention paid to this band is indicative of the degradation of rock music as being a force of larger cultural power/acknowledgment. Like twenty years ago, Rated O would've been an "event record" in my mind.

To answer the previous question -- out in a couple of months and I'm giving it an ear now. REALLY like the first track, it's them on the proto-ambient Kraut/space zoneout tip and it actually feels like an extension of ideas instead of a tribute to them. Which I knew they had in them, it's just great to hear it.
