is there any thread on best DJ mixes of the 00s?
― just sayin, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link
destroy
none of the albums are really bad, except maybe the post-grooverider GO FASTA DUMM N BASS installments (j majik, andy c & dj hype, etc etc)
well, maybe one. michael mayer. terrible, terrible stuff. like all other kompakt related microhouse, a huge pus-leaking zit on the hairy ass of true techno music.

btw, i own all of the fabric / fabric lives barring the drum and bass ones (and i have many of those)

seriously though i feel like that bugz mix is like one quarter ghost face killer to three quarters purest filler
much like each of the genres represented on the mix

Any love for the Ricky Villa 'mix'? Was swept along by the pre-release hype at the time but ultimately found it a bit dry and unexciting.
― sam500, Thursday, 4 November 2010 04:28 (thirteen years ago) link
I didn't hear the RV mix until like 2 years later, and for what it was I found it to be really great.

people are not going to be pleased at this. vahid you may offend people if you continue to post in this manner. they won't stand for it!

Shackleton mix is apparently all Shackleton and not all new/unreleased Shackleton.

Ricky Villa
lol am stealing this

Shackleton one sounded impressive albeit through computer speakers - yeah is def all his stuff, didn't check what was/wasn't exclusive tho
Optimo one is pound-for-pound the most... loveable I've heard in the whole series I think
― Joy Orbison wrapped in clingfilm (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 4 November 2010 14:13 (thirteen years ago) link
the ricky villa (lol) one is probably the most polarizing fabric cd. myself, i listened to it many times and still couldn't get it. and vahid is the first person i saw hating the m mayer one.
― Death Cab for Kuti (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 4 November 2010 14:25 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah the Mayer one, though the middle is a bit slack, is pretty glorious.
― EDB, Thursday, 4 November 2010 15:11 (thirteen years ago) link
ricky villa i'd say is pretty cool tho not a necessity. there are like four or five ricky villa albums i'd buy first.
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 4 November 2010 16:28 (thirteen years ago) link
as far as mayer goes, i really enjoy the first three and last three tracks but i think the middle is a total snorefest.
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 4 November 2010 16:29 (thirteen years ago) link
truth is that i really hate wispy swoony microhouse tho so your mileage may vary
― moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 4 November 2010 16:30 (thirteen years ago) link
isn't some of the middle quite technoey...i haven't listened to it in years, or is the really technoey track the third one....
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 4 November 2010 16:56 (thirteen years ago) link
Loved the Jackson remix of M83 on the Mayer mix. Wasn't so keen on the rest.

8-X DEATH IN VEGAS 8-X
so this thing starts out with chopped and screwed italo, then moves into something that sounds like a cheesy "trans europe express" rip at first but suddenly breaks down into a tuff abstract techno break thats as chopped and phased as a prime urban tribe track. then there's a third section with super tight electro zaps over what sounds like a klaus schulze track. anyway the third track is the one that takes my head off into future shock territory. the washed-out and slowed down choir that starts the thing is at like the exact midpoint between chillwave, witch house and old rising high chillout tracks, but then there's these echoey balearic freak folk guitar / middle eastern string stabs that fleck the whole thing, and then throbbing gabber-like bass under the whole thing. basically this mix couldn't get more "secret history of goth crunk" if it tried.

sorry to repost
I'm sure I posted this earlier, but I was a huge fan of the Radioactive Man mix when that came out. Absolutely enormous, tough as nails early-00's electro, which might be a bit dated now but nevertheless is fun as fuck.
― village idiot (dog latin), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 16:54 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah it's too dated for me now but there really *are* several monster tracks on there, i recall the pile-up between his own "ave that" and tim wright's remix is pretty amazing, as is rother's "die macht" and 2LS dot allison remix.

In/Out was the highlight for me. But it's full of bangers. No doubt I will dig it out and enjoy it anew in a couple of years.

^^^^ Esp. Rise Ashen's "Second Wind"!!!
I think maybe Vahid underrates it because he prefers Sounds You Can Feel? I disagree, though both are ace.

The fact that I rate the Fabric mix ever so slightly higher should not in any way be taken as a diss...
― Tim F, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 09:59 (thirteen years ago) link
Villalobos mix is a classic in my book, particularly love the first half lead up to the track with the "zany" voice, just super sharp precision house tools. I seriously can't think of anybody more capable of those kind of extremely reduced and refined functional loop tracks since like prime Dan Bell?
The mix that sadly always gets left out of these discussions is Akufen's. It's a perfect summation of that early-mid 00s Classic/MFF/Perlon/Telegraph micro-junction, ridiculously groovy and unashamedly house with plenty of headphone pleasing "wtf was that" moments.
― Volker Veldeke, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:40 (thirteen years ago) link
Actually Villalobos would've been a classic if it wasn't for the 12 minute OMG Fabric at 10 AM bore-a-thons towards the end.
― Volker Veldeke, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 11:42 (thirteen years ago) link
xp yeah I dug out the Akufen mix again recently - great stuff. I think I like it more now than I did at the time of first release (when I was probably hoping it would be all My Way style "flipping the radio dial" blipvert house, although there is more of that on there than I remembered!)
RV mix is the exception to the rule that the only good Fabric/Fabriclive mixes are the ones with PRIME NUMBERS [/sweeping generalisation] ;)
― Jeff W, Tuesday, 23 November 2010 13:23 (thirteen years ago) link
Thread kind of inspired by the EDM poll nominations and the way they've been taking me deeper into 2000s house & techno than before (though it was a path I'd already started a little way down).
These are the only ones in the series I own so far -Fabriclive 54 - David Rodiganfabric 55 - ShackletonFabriclive 56 - Pearson Sound/Ramadanmanfabric 63 - Levon Vincent& I've also given quite a few listens to friends' copies of fabric 50 - Martyn and Fabriclive 57 - Jackmaster.
From these, the Shackleton one is an all-time fave and the Levon Vincent CD is something that I'm listening to over and over at the moment. The only one I'd maybe give a 'destroy' rating to is the Jackmaster, which is a shame because Jack usually is one of my favorite DJs (think this was discussed in another thread actually).Browsing through the list inside the Levon case, there's quite a lot of tasty-looking earlier entries, but I'm looking for some expert opinion before I decide what to go for next.(Apologies if this has already been covered - did a quick search and it seemed to be threads on individual CDs but not the whole series).
