seven months pass...

Word is that Rick Froberg is dealing with a viral heart infection right now. Godspeed, sir!

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 12 June 2011 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

jesus, how does one even get a viral heart infection? i thought that was something only dogs got.

i'm a big rick fan and hope to buy some of his art one of these days.

del griffith, Sunday, 12 June 2011 21:36 (twelve years ago) link

obitsband Rick has a viral heart infection. He's okay, but we need to cancel July shows. Very, very sorry & will reschedule...

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 12 June 2011 22:00 (twelve years ago) link

Glad he's okay. Still sounds quite uncomfortable.

Whoa, lucky ducks! Such a great live band, hope they play a few other shows.

grandavis, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link

Nice!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

That ATP is turning out to be a thing of great beauty. I so badly wanted to see Hot Snakes.
Shit it's over my birthday! Need to start dropping some hints to loved ones.

owenf, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

Hopefully this all means Rick's over the viral heart infection talked about last month!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

"yeah, im super stokified on this. so far just ATP is confirmed. we are talking about maybe doin a couple more shows before hand. not sure where but not west coast. we will be hangin on the east coast so most likely out there or in europe.i will letchu know. don't know who is playin drums. trying to figure out the scheduling and who is up for it and what makes the most sense. please do not share your thoughts or preferences on the matter. not interested in suggestions. Night Marchers shows most likely will not coincide with this trip. good times." - John Reis

Hot Snakes very quietly slipped a BRAND NEW SONG on the Swami label comp that came out on Record Store Day... it's called "Stay in School" and it's not something old from the vaults - it's full on new!! I haven't really seen anyone talk about it, but it's pretty killer.....

Post a yousendit ASAP, please. I'm intrigued

van smack, Wednesday, 4 May 2016 03:26 (seven years ago) link

Haha I'm assuming the YSI request is a throwback to when anyone on ILX would have cared about Hot Snakes

anyway, here it is...

feel like them breaking from the trend of their previous cover art is not a good sign

His surf album from 2015 was great. I would be up for more distinctly Hot Snakes surf explorations as well.

NO THANKS

na (NA), Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:56 (six years ago) link

i mean fine whatever but the first release single from the new album didn't sound like hot snakes, it sounded like one of the post-hot snakes bands like obits or something, and i just want a hot snakes album that sounds like and looks like hot snakes

na (NA), Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:57 (six years ago) link

There've been a couple of new singles so far. I liked "Sick Wave Hold-Down" but didn't care as much for the other one.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Thursday, 8 March 2018 22:08 (six years ago) link

New album is streaming at NPR. Sounds like Hot Snakes to me!

album is predictably sick. recommended for fans of john reis yelling the name of the song at you over and over

Simon H., Friday, 9 March 2018 14:43 (six years ago) link

yeah ok this is great so far

na (NA), Friday, 9 March 2018 16:32 (six years ago) link

John Reis doesn't sing in Hot Snakes, btw

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 9 March 2018 17:12 (six years ago) link

i should get some hot snakes. i would like them i think. i still need copies of yank crime and that first DLJ. i got rid of my copy of yank crime in the 90s. i was JUST listening to his stuff last night on Youtube. i still have never listened to that Pitchfork album. i'd probably like that too. i still adore Circa:Now! but i never heard any RFTC that i liked as much as that album. the later stuff always sounded a little corny to me. there is probably good post-circa:now! stuff though. i realize that.

many xp meant lead vocals, obviously

I like the new album. No surprises, picks up right where they left off, which is OK with me.

"Death Doula" is a jam, and worthy of its title

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 9 March 2018 18:31 (six years ago) link

seeing these guys tonight, stoked~!

"I considered stopping playing guitar on a social media poll after I completely mastered the instrument," Reis writes in a press release. "But so many people kept sending me letters and voicemail messages, asking me at the dry cleaners, or the butcher shop to bring back Hot Snakes. They were missing rock and roll music. I've always considered Hot Snakes to be more in the vein of the proto-Vog movement of the early '70s. But to these people, this is their rock 'n' roll. I understand that. I totally understand people's desire to be controlled and humiliated by my guitar. Anyone can play the stupid guitar. What they want is for me to use it as a branding iron."

na (NA), Saturday, 10 March 2018 01:43 (six years ago) link

I have a circle of friends for whom Hot Snakes is kinda the godhead modern rock n roll band. Froberg album art tattoos and all. Always been a fan, but man, there’s Real Srs fandom out there.

circa1916, Saturday, 10 March 2018 03:59 (six years ago) link

I have seen this, too. Mass pilgrimages to gigs and such, and yes, tattoos.

Of course, I'd take Yank Crime over any of the 4 Hot Snakes albums, but what do I know

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 10 March 2018 13:17 (six years ago) link

Yeah that’s how I feel about Jehu. I will always take more Hot Snakes but I’ll take either DLJ album over any of the Hot Snakes records.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 10 March 2018 15:41 (six years ago) link

john reis holy shit

i've never seen anyone play the guitar like that

scoff walker (diamonddave85), Saturday, 10 March 2018 21:09 (six years ago) link

For being a non-technically proficient son of a tuna fishing Portuguese immigrant from the wrong side of the San Diego docks, he does play himself a mean guitar. Almost up there with the LA rocker hotshots that San Diegan rockers feel intrinsically inferior to.

This was with Drive Like Jehu, but still worth posting here I think:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlDJuvHwzjM

and it may interest Hot Snacks fans (and long-time Rocket from the Crypt fans for that matter) to know that during the midst of the recording sessions of the new album, John's trusty Les Paul was stolen and subsequently recovered. When it happened, I'd read something about street justice, like straight up fisticuffs, but apparently that's not exactly how it went down

https://www.nbcsandiego.com/blogs/sounddiego/Swami-Gets-His-Guitar-Back-429116473.html

the Suicide/Wipers simultaneous riff tribute moment on the last song on the new one is pretty neat.

Who are you referring to?

timellison, Monday, 12 March 2018 01:47 (six years ago) link

xp i was at that show!

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 March 2018 01:53 (six years ago) link

Who are you referring to?

I am referring specifically to none other than Tracii Guns, who owes me $700 btw.

i was at that show!

I love the small world in which we live.

del griffith, Monday, 12 March 2018 02:00 (six years ago) link

I'll take it you don't have a serious answer Del

timellison, Monday, 12 March 2018 03:06 (six years ago) link

that's seriously how he spells his name - look it up

I woulda said Rikk Agnew, but he's Orange County.

del griffith, Monday, 12 March 2018 03:27 (six years ago) link

You from LA, Del? Just talking trash?

timellison, Monday, 12 March 2018 03:48 (six years ago) link

The idea of John Reis feeling inferior to Traci Guns is the most hilarious notion.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Monday, 12 March 2018 14:28 (six years ago) link

"Hot Snacks" is a great band name
