been doing the backing musician thing for the past year and a half but kinda missing making original stuff...so anyway, here's my first ever attempt at making beat-oriented, dance whatever type stuff....

don't really know what the fuck i'm doing figured fucking around in garageband would be a good way to start

O'Donnell and the Brain (HI DERE), Friday, 22 October 2010 20:01 (thirteen years ago) link

thanks man! i was just thinking that i'd love to do a minneapolis show, but i don't really have any contacts in the electronic/indie scene there (my bros are all jazz/salsa/brass band horn players).

haha matt, your string loop at 1:25 brings back memories of the youtube rap battle that went down between me & my girlfriend vs her brother and his girlfriend.

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Friday, 22 October 2010 20:06 (thirteen years ago) link

haha shit yeah that's the exact loop! i was just using all the corny preset loops and stuff that come with garageband, i don't even know how to use it really yet so i was just kinda winging it...it's a nice loop...also that rap is hilarious...

(and thanks HI DERE...the beginning i was trying to get a "big sky" kate bush type thing...i dunno mostly just learning i guess)

This is the first home-recording I've made in a very long time. It's a demo of a song called Fiction.

An album and a six-song EP. There's a link to an e-version of the EP on this thread: The vaguely rolling ExDetectives thread of self-promotion (Do Not Read If You Hate Us)

New album on the way in a couple of months (need to get some $$$ to master it)

Stockhausen's Helicopter Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 25 October 2010 20:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Here is a couple of tunes from my newish band, pretty much made with a couple overdubs on practice recordings. I'm going to sit down and do another mix session this week and add in the overdub we did on one tune on Sunday.

Don't remember if I ever posted the whole of the bedroom album I recorded a couple of years back... It starts off kind of shit and gets kind of better as it goes on.

Had the good fortune to work on some tracks with surm recently. We recorded about an hour's worth of stuff--his vocals with me playing along on his synth, just kind of letting out whatever came to us. Big thanks to him for letting me post one of the tracks.

big jeans (lou), Thursday, 28 October 2010 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link

sounds great. reverb on the vocals is really nice, what are you using for that?

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2010 17:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks, Jordan. We didn't use anything fancy for the reverb--just GarageBand.

Pretty happy with this track i finished a couple weeks ago, i guess its an attempt at a Kompakt type track, made with ableton (which i am just learning) and reaktor. definitely needs some work on the mix and eqs

Crut, I love your gritty drum sounds. What do you use?

Fetchboy, Saturday, 6 November 2010 15:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, more importantly, the songwriting is http://www.evetahmincioglu.com/web/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/tony-the-tiger-frosties.jpg

Fetchboy, Saturday, 6 November 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Thanks!!

On some songs I used Reason's drum machine + effects; on others I used my Roland RS-9 (on which I usually pitched down the drums).

Those two Rome Pays Off tracks are really cool. I've got one of the Rothko CDs quite a long time back.

FYI, if anyone is interested I posted a new mix of one of my tunes on the sound cloud site.

diggin those punchier drums, man!

Fetchboy, Sunday, 14 November 2010 12:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I wish the snare sound wasn't total ass on the original recording. The mic must have moved and got off target, it also sounds like it bounced off the rim of the drum itself a couple of times. I'm pretty cool with the rest of the mix. I don't think it sounds bad for going live to 6 tracks in a garage with a couple of overdubs.

I'm going to try one last mix, but first I am going to load the snare track into Ableton and try some of the gate and filters to maybe come up with a sound with some snap that I can blend in with the original track and maybe get the sound I'd like.

Hi Rent, yea that's right, we did a split 12" with his remix and our remix of his remix.

Here is a link to a session I was palying on for Late Junction on Radio 3 (that was broadcast last night) with my friend Khyam who is an extremely talented Oud Player and an equally brilliant Cellist called Matthew.

I was playing bass but being a sort-of human sruti box making really deep drones and loops, it was a lot of fun.

"This podcast is not available outside the UK" :(
I took a break from working on my snythpop nasoalmo entry this morning and made this little thing. Goes out of sync at a couple of points on account of my shitty guitar playing, but I think it's kinda nice for 4 tracks on a shitty acoustic.
