I don't think I've heard 90% of this list, but that Gold Panda album is great. I wouldn't have thought it "chillwave" but I guess that's what he gets for using the word Panda in his name.

― sarahel, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link
you could have merged Toro y Moi w/ Les Sins and Neon Indian w/ VEGA, since Bundick and Palomo have great tracks in both of their respective projects so it makes little sense to differentiate between them
and: loool @ Damiano CZ, where the hell did you pull that list from? not like he ain't chillwave but I certainly didn't expect him to pop up. if it wasn't for him I'd vote for TyM, since Chaz Bundick seems to be the most talented guy on this list

Most of this stuff is really not very good. I very much love Washed Out's Life of Leisure, however.

I own and love stuff by all of these guys, as noted above - I really wouldn't put McGuire under "chillwave", nor would I Ducktails.

u ppl (+ whiney) just dont get it - chillwave is just whats real anything could be chillwave but not everything is chillwave - its a feeling/aesthetic/interpersonal brand
that said i think that monster rally 7" is fun but its not chillwave
― soda lake swame (Lamp), Thursday, 28 October 2010 01:47 (thirteen years ago) link
are ppl just gunna call this stuff indie a few years down the line or will 'chillwave' be a lasting tag used to categorize music based on its aesthetic similarities.
― not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 28 October 2010 01:52 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah in hindsight the extent of ilm chillwave cynism was kinda lame. saw this p chillwavin duo at a vernissage a couple weeks back and even though they were pretty bad, i was thinking like maybe its kind of a cool sound to explore, as a brief obsession at least, and i was just being a crank
also came upon this quote yesterday & it made me ponder my own cantankerousness of late
But my basic test for whether ILM is still good - that everything gets a fair hearing from at least some of the people here - hasn't been failed yet.

will 'chillwave' be a lasting tag used to categorize music based on its aesthetic similarities
i dont think so - feel like 'chilwave' is/was/will always be haunted be the inverted commas surrounding it - i do think it might have been useful way of grouping together and thinking about a bunch of bands that had certain preoccupations in common. even more than just being a sound theres a way of assembling/curating/presenting music that seems v 2k9/2k10 & what ppl generally call 'chillwave' was the best of collecting that sensibility in one place...
idk - plax & i had a thread where he kinda talked abt chillwave seriously & tht abt antecedents, values, forms &c but ilm is typically p hostile to anything that might be 'trendy' that isnt rap music & also i mostly just like posting youtube vidz
― soda lake swame (Lamp), Thursday, 28 October 2010 02:53 (thirteen years ago) link
Chillwave is just a name for a trend. According to this list, it encompasses a lot of practice some of it productive and some of it repugnant/abysmal. A lot of it does not require much effort and it sounds that way and the amateur hour aspect of it is annoying. But there is some good stuff. I dunno it's easy/fun to make fun of it for obvious reasons but only a few posters seem to have been constantly/cynically going at it. In short, "take it or leave it" (like all music).

Nite Jewel? Is that even chillwave? More sort of Arthur Russell inspired bedroom disco IMO. Didn't even realize that was a choice.
