Call me mean-spirited, but media saturation of any individual is enough to make me dislike them, even if they might have been or still are funny.

Saw him on the edition of Buzzcocks which replaced the scheduled Russell Brand one. Didn't make much of an impression on me one way or the other.

Then there was a feature on him in Guardian Weekend in which he seemed a pretty repulsive sort of fellow.

On balance he doesn't annoy me a trillionth as much as Michael fucking McIntyre.

(if we're talking total, unsolicited media saturation)

^^^^^this (though i saw mcintyre do standup a year ago and he gets less repulsive as the set wears on)

I found his flirting with Germaine Greer on Buzzcocks quite funny. Gavin and Stacey is watchable but a bit too gentle for my tastes.

I fully concur with the Macintyre hate.

i recognised his voice pretty much straight away. it did seem stupid to give it to Gervais who has done fuck all this year and his video speech was tired - but G&S was obv going to win an award anyway. the awards show was crap tho, probably poorer for lack of Ross - Deayton, a few early gags aside, fluffed lines and banter a few times and they ran so late they cut to the credits during his final message. also Carrot was really unfunny for someone winning a contribution/achievement award.

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Deayton's always been useless.

Hullo...
My name's Angus Deayton (long pause)...
And unless I'm reading from an autocue (upwards inflection)...
like this (slight stress on "this")...
I'm about as useful as a bag of spanners (downwards inflection)...

What he said. He's famed as a wit without ever having done anything to deserve it.

chap, Monday, 8 December 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Spot on precis.
But he also has "a slight smirk" in his repertoire. He's multi-talented.

Holden McGroin (Ned Trifle II), Monday, 8 December 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

xp - did I dream it or has Gervais done that exact joke (about winning "real awards") before?

Holden McGroin (Ned Trifle II), Monday, 8 December 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

best thing Deayton ever did is that KYTV ad where he trips up little girl after she nutmegs him

Matt DC, Monday, 8 December 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

don't know to what extent he was responsible for writing on HIGNFY but Radio Active/KYTV stuff was good and he's a reasonable one-note actor

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Deayton is fucking hilarious on the first series of "Nighty Night."

Allegedly.

i watched the youtube clip of kevin bishop throwing things at the inbetweeners guys as they collected their award ( ) and thought he looked like a nasty coked-up fuckwit. checked out some of his sketches and the reality is far far worse:

so depressing that this is where british comedy is right now. the clips ive seen of inbetweeners aren't much better either, but this bishop guy is the absolute pits. like bobby davro level pits. even if he was slightly funny he shat all over it by being in a fucking natwest advert. is this a new low in vaguely-edgy comedians sucking corporate cock the second it's offered?

NI, Monday, 8 December 2008 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't mind Kevin Bishop. I think he's probably a complete tool, but some of his stuff raises the odd laugh.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 8 December 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah right, as if James Cordon was ever going to shout abuse at Ricky Gervais.

DavidM, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 14:44 (fifteen years ago) link

omg that youtube clip!

Katy Brand "Fuck you Bishop....(to audience) he never paid for our baby..."

think Bishop then says "you're still carrying it"?!

i dunno if he is all that bad - some of these guys deserve to have stuff thrown at them...someone should've clouted him anyway tho. Star Stories has it's moments. it took me ages to realise it's him in those NatWest ads for some reason.

i'm not sure if the one about how he completely ignores his family (crying newborn child and wife) on the plane was pretty funny. plus i learned that patrick stewart had beef with him. how the fuck do you get on patrick stewart's bad side

sorry, mangled my first sentence there, but i meant that i'm not sure if the story about him on the plane is true or not. it's all just anecdotal, like all the rest. but there sure are a lot of people who have an anecdote about him being bad

Late with this, but since due to the strikes CBS hasn't been able to start production on their intended Corden replacement (a reboot of @midnight), they've gone with...reruns and previously unseen episodes of Byron Allen's Comics Unleashed, a syndicated panel show that ceased production in 2016.

Yeah.

After Midnight (the delayed CBS Corden replacement) has a host and is happening next year

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/01/arts/television/taylor-tomlinson-after-midnight-host-stephen-colbert.html

In a shake-up of the late-night television landscape, the stand-up comic Taylor Tomlinson, 29, will take over the time slot after “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS. The move makes her not just the only woman in the job on a late-night show on network television now, but also the youngest by two decades.

Tomlinson will serve as host of “After Midnight,” based on “@midnight With Chris Hardwick,” a series that premiered on Comedy Central in 2013 and was canceled four years later. That show, with Hardwick as the host, featured a panel of comics.

Among the executive producers of the new show is Stephen Colbert, who announced the news on his program on Wednesday. Tomlinson will start in 2024.

So now just a couple months or so of vintage Comics Unleashed episodes left, and trying to figure out if any of the panelists later died by autoerotic asphyxiation at a Holiday Inn during the middle of a weeklong stand at The Chuckle Hut in Tuscaloosa.

No such luck (yet), but last night they ran one with David Brenner, who died almost 10 years ago.
