a nurse at the asylum and choreographer in the brothel i believe this is a shakespearean quote that eventually evolved into "a lady in the streets but a freak in the bed"

What the hell is this thing? Saw new trailer last night and it is RIDICULOUS. And it seems to give EVERYTHING away, except for the fact that it makes NO SENSE.

Watched this on HBO OnDemand last weekend

It was sort of stupid but made up for it by being really, really, really fun.

thuggish ruggish Brahms (DJP), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 15:56 (twelve years ago) link

also can we talk about how lolsome the soundtrack is

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 20:25 (twelve years ago) link

I just can't see myself ever watching this, I have heard too much about how rapey this movie is.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

It's probably more accurate to say the movie is very almost-rapey? There are several instances where various female characters are assaulted but something happens to stop the assault in its tracks (usually Baby Doll).

It is not a super positive portrayal of male-female dynamics or 50s sanitariums and the subtext behind the various fantasy sequences is really, really horrifying, but the fantasy sequences themselves, particularly the action scenes, are hilarious.

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

speaking literally, the theatrical cut isn't terribly rapey. implicitly, sure, in that female characters are trapped and abused and forced to dance in an (imaginary) burlesque club. well, and there's an attempted rape near the end. what's awful about it is the weird glee it takes it punishing the main character and her friends, that and the incredible hypocrisy of the conclusion. have heard that the director's cut is pretty explicitly rapey, though. haven't seen that.

soundtrack is losome on a couple levels. for one thing, it's dire. for another, the songs are "reimagined" by babydoll just like the rest of the world, geddit?

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

the subtext behind the various fantasy sequences is really, really horrifying

maybe yes, maybe no. one of the problems w the movie is that we ultimately know almost nothing about what really went on during those fantasy sequences. we don't even know whether or not any of the other girls ever existed.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

yes we do!

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

didn't find it fun at all tbh

internet somebody (some dude), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, unless you want to argue that everything that happened before the advent of the burlesque fantasy was imaginary as well, we see most if not all of the main four girls right when Baby Doll initially comes to the sanitarium

xp: you didn't think the various automaton/creature battles were fun?

"the women are forced into sexual bondage and there's an attempted rape; I'd give it only 3/10 rapey points"

Marilyn Hagerty: the terroir of tiny town (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:57 (twelve years ago) link

NB I have not seen this, nothing could ever top GA'HOOLE

Marilyn Hagerty: the terroir of tiny town (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:58 (twelve years ago) link

well, "terribly" being a sliding scale. it definitely skews rapey, but a bit less than i think has suggested by some. suppose i'm splitting hairs...

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:58 (twelve years ago) link

I can tell you Ga'Hoole wasn't rapey at all, no hairs split.

Marilyn Hagerty: the terroir of tiny town (Abbbottt), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

there's also the suggestion that much of the "sexual bondage" angle is imaginary, so it's a bit tough to work out what exactly is going on

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

uses "sexual bondage of young girls by creepy old dudes" for titillation, i don't think imaginary/not matters here

lukas, Wednesday, 21 March 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, unless you want to argue that everything that happened before the advent of the burlesque fantasy was imaginary as well, we see most if not all of the main four girls right when Baby Doll initially comes to the sanitarium

yeah, but that only means that babydoll based her fantasies on something. there's also the suggestion that the head doctor uses role playing as therapy, we have no reason to doubt her integrity, so a lot of what we see later on might just be talk therapy, not anything too horrible.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

uses "sexual bondage of young girls by creepy old dudes" for titillation, i don't think imaginary/not matters here

yeah, that's a good point.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

I thought it was all very straightforward, honestly (also SPOILERS) (lol):

- There is one level of fantasy that plays itself out where, in the instant before she gets Hammed, Baby Doll mentally replays the events of the past five days cast in the form of the burlesque prison.
- When Baby Doll dances in the burlesque fantasy, she drops into the action sequence fantasies which represent her crew's attempts to assemble all of the pieces necessary for their escape.

In actual reality, at least three of the girls were seriously hurt and/or killed during the breakout attempt, the aftermath of which can be seen in the sweep through the sanitarium after Baby Doll gets Hammed. Also, you see that a good chunk of the interaction between the orderly and Dr Carla Guguino never actually happened and the orderlies were terrorizing the girls behind the doctor's back and without her knowledge. We also know from actual reality that:

- Rocket died in a struggle with the cook.
- Baby Doll helped Sweet Pea escape and gave herself up as a distraction.
- The main awful orderly tried to force himself on Baby Doll and she stabbed him in the neck.

Everything else, including possibly the existence of Amber and Blondie was warped through how Baby Doll experienced life in the sanitarium; in reality, there was no collusion whatsoever between the doctor and the orderlies, the orderlies had no power over the doctor, and Jon Hamm was just a handsome, pensive dude handing out a lobotomy or two.

The point where there's "... or DID THEY????" confusion is the casting of the bus driver as the girls' mentor in Baby Doll's fantasy, which you can either read as the script signposting that none of this ever actually happened, including the second half of "reality", and Baby Doll is just in a blissed-out lobotomized haze with no free friends and no impending justice against her stepfather, or as the script being lazy in trying to be clever clever about aping its Wizard of Oz double-casting.

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Wednesday, 21 March 2012 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

and that, my friends, is how you write way too fucking much about a movie that doesn't really merit thinking over

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Thursday, 26 July 2012 13:31 (eleven years ago) link

im somewhat serious about that - i do think the movie was meant to indict male gaze-iness in nerd culture by inviting dudes to watch hot babes and guns and explosions and all that crap, but then pulling a switcheroo on em with all the feelbad stuff. its just unimaginably stupid and tasteless in the execution

I thought I would really like this movie but when I finally saw it, the battle scenes were uninteresting to me, just manufactured CGI crap that went on for 3x too long. So sad.
