haha i was watching the BET thing last night but didn't see j0rdan's liveblog til just now. the funniest thing was their whole cutoff point was people who haven't been dropping albums earlier than '99, clearly engineered specifically to include Em and Wayne but not Jay or any other older cats.

someone explain to me why Wiz is better than Wale, to me they sound pretty similar and are annoying for a lot of the same reasons
― underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 14:02 (thirteen years ago) link
well wiz def raps in a less try hard manner & that laid back cool stoner vibe is maybe why he connects w/ a lot of younger folks
― truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 15:42 (thirteen years ago) link
see he doesn't sound like that to me, he sounds like he's straining and pushing the words out and forcing dumb rhymes the same way as Wale. i mean are any of his euphemisms for getting high even clever or funny or is it all "oooh i'm high i'm in a plane get it get it"
― underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 16:22 (thirteen years ago) link
they dont rap alike at all??
― j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 17:58 (thirteen years ago) link
wale sounds like hes trying really hard to be intricate & is way more bland, wiz's vocals are chill & laid back and distinctive if not particularly lyrically interesting. wiz also has consistent taste in beats & doesnt glom on to any sound or style that floats his way. and he has consistent subject matter that amounts to getting high, having money, sleeping with you girlfriend. also, saw him live, electric performer.
i mean, you dont need to ask us -- ask the actual-fanbase wiz has. obviously hes doing something wale isnt
― j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:00 (thirteen years ago) link
Yeah Al, go ask wiz's cultural fanbase, members of which you clearly know and interact with everyday. Why would you even bother asking us?
― truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:02 (thirteen years ago) link
'cultural fanbase'??
― j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:02 (thirteen years ago) link
god forbid a music journalist do some music journalism (i know al was just asking in an armchair rhetorical way but obv i wasnt actually saying he needed to ask wiz's fanbase but that wiz's fanbase itself suggests maybe there is a major difference, as wale's entire career has been about struggling for a fanbase, but j0rdan is just being trolly iirc fwiw imo)

― S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link
That said, I agree with deej. I think wiz has a personality that is very easyy to connect to -- he's affable and his subject matter fits the "character" -- I agree that wale is more bland, also his strengths -- I guess stuff like the Seinfeld tape -- is something that is highly likely to be fetishized by journalists than and not really something That I think is going to build a significant fanbase. I think wale was "born into" press coverage, whereas wiz, largely, forced it
― truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link
Deej what the fuck are you talking about? I was mocking you for implying that shipley should go hunt down some wiz fans and pick their brains instead of posing the question to us, which is, you know, sort of the whole point of the board

yeah see this is kinda what I was getting at to begin with -- Wale and Wiz have completely different images and fanbases and to a certain set of rap fan, including a lot of the people here, one is cool and one is totally lame, but to me they sound very similar and are mediocre in a lot of the same ways. but I guess instead of puncturing the conventional wisdom and questioning whether the lame Mark Ronsonite skinny jeans blog rapper and the tattooed weed smoking rapper are actually that different on an actual musical level yeah we can just circle back to oh the kids have spoken, 400 thousand twitter followers can't be wrong.
― underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link
part of it might be that they're both from places without a strong 'regional rap identity' and both imo have these kind of annoying flat accents that sound awkward compared to NYC or southern rappers -- it's not a problem with all rappers from this part of the country, Philly rappers have their own sound and accent, nobody besides me really listens to Baltimore rappers but the good ones have their own sound, but to me D.C. doesn't and I guess maybe Pittsburgh doesn't either.
― underrated bobos I have honked (some dude), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:48 (thirteen years ago) link
i ... dont think they have the same weaknesses? at all? are you really on some 'oooh skinny jeans' beanie sigel

― j. sargent & lil k3v (deej), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link
on an actual musical level, the differences are really obvious? also wiz has made a handful of good songs & wale hasnt
