i just finished the pearl lowe biography - she's the partner of the drummer. never was a big supergrass fan tbh, now... well, i just know too much about the primrose set. christ...

well, if you wanna know all about a menswear supporting powder bandmember hovering coke and smoking crack while neglecting her kids she had with the drummer and also gavin rossdale, do check it out. :-) i think i'd have better been off just sticking with the records. :-) (not that i wanted to know about supergrass, i wasn't so naive to think i'd find something out about said band...)

My immediate reaction to the news was 'what, Supergrass Is 10 was seven years ago?!', which seems a slightly odd thing to be thinking

Ismael Klata, Monday, 12 April 2010 12:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Good work slogging through years of indifference and splitting up just as everyone else from the 90s is getting back together and making piles of cash.

Matt DC, Monday, 12 April 2010 12:58 (fourteen years ago) link

They still tour(ed) pretty big venues and whatnot tho right? I'd've thought that they were a fairly financially sustainable band that had just long existed on a plateau where it's entirely easy to ignore them

neden magnet (DJ Mencap), Monday, 12 April 2010 13:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm totally gutted about this, their last three albums were all really great. One of the most underrated bands around.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 12 April 2010 13:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Their last album was being flogged for a pound in Fopp not too long after it was released. Maybe the albums were just not wanted from the public at all.

See you all here for the reunion.

Yeah, I think that asking people a whole pound for it was just pushing their luck tbh.

Despite musical differences being cited, in November 2009, drummer Danny Goffey sent a message to bassist Mick Quin via Twitter saying "No Mick. You're the problem"[23].

I thought the last album was the best since In It For the Money. On the whole I think they were really consistent and I'll miss them.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 12 April 2010 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Saw them open for Radiohead in 2003 -- boring. YouTube'd a few songs after the show, to make sure I wasn't missing anything -- boring. Haven't been bothered to check out anything else since.

They also released an album called Diamond Hoo Ha, which tops this in ridiculousness.

I'm glad you agree. I played it today and enjoyed it a lot I just think they picked the wrong singles, the album really starts at Rebel With You. Ghost of a Friend is one the best songs they ever put out and Butterfly is a great album closer.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 12 April 2010 19:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Supergrass was great live for the first three plus albums or so, not sure how good they were in the late 2000's. i kept buying their records but didn't really get into the last couple. still sad that they broke up but all good things must come to an end i guess.

were the hordes of Combes relations cluttering up late Grarse lineups also in Hot Rats, or was it a strict duo?

it's all abt groups, like i was saying in the jerk thread a few days ago (sic), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 05:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I used to be good mates with Rob in Uni. Whilst the band were always touted as a trio in the early days Rob was always involved with the band from a very early stage.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Anyone know why he wasn't listed as an official member until the 4th album? He's on the songwriting credits from 'Going Out' onwards.

PaulTMA, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:34 (fourteen years ago) link

They never really bettered Caught By the Fuzz, but still, great band

Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 11:45 (fourteen years ago) link

'St Petersburg' is a great tune - I didn't realise they came up with it so late, I assumed I'd just missed it. Looking at their discography, it reckons they had almost no success outside the Uk, which seems a shame

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:02 (fourteen years ago) link

I know Rob was in the band from Going Out, but wasn't there another little brother, or a cousin, or their granny on bongos by the end too?

I guess the supposed "Return to form" in 2008 was no good idea. 1999-2005 was their best period, when the slowed down somewhat and concentrated on great harmonies and a somewhat "psychedelic" style.

Bigelf do much of the same today, only more progressive. Might follow them instead.

I really don't agree with that. They always had great harmonies and a psychedelic style right from the beginning, listen to Sofa off the debut. I was a big fan of their later albums but the first two albums are complete classics. The third album was a disappointment for me at the time, especially when Moving was such a great single. There's a few good songs on there but they sounded a bit tired. Life On Other Planets was a lot better but I think Diamond Hoo Ha was a genuine return to form, great songwriting and full of the energy that made them so appealing in the first place.

Caught By the Fuzz may remain their finest moment but they had plenty of others.

They had a new album ready to go, I really hope it still gets released.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 13:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess I was the only one disappointed by "in it for the money", the third seemed like a return but then again I only played it 1nce.

it does look lovely, but i have the catalogue on cd which still sound great to me, so not fussed re remastering/extras.

seen a few comments (and theories) here and there about the lack of 'going out' on the compilation given it was a big hit.
